🌈 i wanna talk about juniper!

today, id like to pick your wonderful brains about juniper!

I have several questions that really only have in common that they’re about the name juniper and ive been trying to use them to steer me away from juniper. (why, oh why did it have to become trendy and mainstream right when I go from disliking to loving it??)

feel free to answer as many or as few as you want, as thoroughly or sparsely as you can!

questions
  • what do you think is the cap of juniper’s popularity?

  • where do you think her popularity will be around 2028-2030?

  • do you consider juniper to be “expected?” (as opposed to unexpected)

  • if not yet, do you think juniper will be an “expected” choice by 2028-2030?

  • does juniper seem similarly expected/unexpected, trendy, mainstream, popular as likely sister rowan (g)?

  • if I dislike june and junie as nicknames (as in, id be a bit bothered having to call her by either of those, especially junie), should that be a dealbreaker? what if I do like the nickname juno?

  • does juniper feel like a religious name?

  • what other names (less popular/trendy) have the same quirky, hippy, carefree sound as juniper? (I like jupiter but not nearly as much)

  • what other names (less popular/trendy) have the same feel (quirky, hippy, carefree) as juniper?

  • any other names (less popular/trendy) that end with the -per sound (besides Piper)?

thank you!

Summary

This is the chart for Juniper’s popularity increases over the years. She’s not going up the charts as quick as [name_u]Harper[/name_u] did, but she is still definitely a fast riser! I’m not sure if she’ll ever be a top 10 name one day. Maybe
 She has the potential
It’s hard to really know, but I can also see her capping off here soon and then even going down a bit before settling into a 200 or 300 ranking. I think a lot of names do that to make way for the next wave of discovered names.

Right now I think old fashioned names, especially ones with cottegecore vibes, are really gaining favor so while I can see nature names rising, I think names that are both nature and old fashioned will rise quickly and maybe [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] will move down to make room for names like [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] or [name_f]Opal[/name_f].

Overall, I still think [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is unexpected for now. In 5 years (2028) you will have a much better idea of exactly what she is going to do on the charts. I would be delighted to meet a baby [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]! [name_f]My[/name_f] kids have a large group of acquaintances from different activities and we have never met a [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. I think here on Nameberry I would totally expect a [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] pairing , but Berries probably put a lot more thought into sibsets than most people, so I wouldn’t say together they would be “mainstream” or “trendy” at all.

I’m the same, I don’t like [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Junie[/name_f] either, but think [name_u]Juno[/name_u] is adorable! Being upfront about the nickname you wish her to be called would most likely solve that problem, however sometimes people just do what they want even if you tell them not too. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe she would want to be called that as a teen or adult, and if it really bothers you, like you absolutely can’t stand it, then yes it’s probably a deal breaker.

I don’t think of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as religious at all! [name_m]Just[/name_m] nature-y and fun!

Other (less popular) names with the same quirky vibe/sound/PER-ending: [name_u]Fifer[/name_u], [name_u]Pepper[/name_u], [name_u]Sparrow[/name_u], [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_u]Lark[/name_u], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_u]Prairie[/name_u], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], [name_u]Skipper[/name_u], [name_u]Kemper[/name_u], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m].

what do you think is the cap of juniper’s popularity? how high could she rise in the rankings? where do you think her popularity will be around 2028-2030?

Maybe top 20 or top 30? Definitely see it in the top 50 at some point. I don’t see it entering the top 10, but it does seem to have a similar profile to [name_u]Harper[/name_u] / [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] sound-wise and vibe-wise (approachable quirky). I do foresee it slowing down a bit as it gets into the top 100. I’d say solidly top 75 or top 50 by 2028-2030.

do you consider juniper to be “expected?” (as opposed to unexpected) if not yet, do you think juniper will be an “expected” choice by 2028-2030?

I think it might seem expected in some geographic locations, but it would be unexpected in my area (southern US). By 2028-2030, I think it will probably be expected in the way that [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is expected. (i.e. for certain types of parents in certain locations). I definitely think it’s the type of name that parents looking for something different would choose, without realizing that it’s actually not all that unpopular! Eyebrow-raising for grandparents, but very on-trend for babies.

does juniper seem similarly expected/unexpected, trendy, mainstream, popular as likely sister rowan (g)?

Very on par with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (g) for me. I get a similar vibe and have similar expectations for both.

if I dislike june and junie as nicknames (as in, id be a bit bothered having to call her by either of those, especially junie), should that be a dealbreaker? what if I do like the nickname juno?

Ehh
I wouldn’t say it’s a dealbreaker, but I do expect some people trying out [name_u]June[/name_u] / [name_f]Junie[/name_f] at some point. Nothing an easy correction couldn’t address. I do think having [name_u]Juno[/name_u] as a default nn option helps.

does juniper feel like a religious name?

No.

what other names have the same quirky, hippy, carefree sound as juniper? (I like jupiter but not nearly as much) what other names have the same feel (quirky, hippy, carefree) as juniper?

I’ve already mentioned [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], though it’s not quite as hippy to me.
Others: [name_u]Lark[/name_u], [name_u]Cleo[/name_u], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Zazie[/name_f], [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_u]Briar[/name_u], [name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], [name_u]Pippin[/name_u], [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Twyla[/name_f], [name_f]Zadie[/name_f], [name_u]Arrow[/name_u], [name_u]Ever[/name_u], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_u]Lennox[/name_u], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Zuri[/name_u], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_u]Blue[/name_u], [name_f]Tesni[/name_f], [name_f]Capri[/name_f], [name_f]Reverie[/name_f]

any other names that end with the -per sound (besides Piper)?

[name_u]Pepper[/name_u], [name_u]Cooper[/name_u], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], [name_u]Kemper[/name_u], [name_u]Copper[/name_u], [name_u]Skipper[/name_u]

what do you think is the cap of juniper’s popularity? - perhaps top 50?

how high could she rise in the rankings? - I think higher than she is now but not right to the very top 10

where do you think her popularity will be around 2028-2030? - top 200 (US), maybe top 400 (U.K.)

do you consider juniper to be “expected?” (as opposed to unexpected) - maybe on nameberry  I can’t speak to the US but it’s definitely not expected in the U.K.

if not yet, do you think juniper will be an “expected” choice by 2028-2030? - I don’t think it will ever feel ‘mainstream’ per se but it might feel more familiar to people by then

does juniper seem similarly expected/unexpected, trendy, mainstream, popular as likely sister rowan (g)? - I’d say they feel expected together, but not mainstream

if I dislike june and junie as nicknames (as in, id be a bit bothered having to call her by either of those, especially junie), should that be a dealbreaker? what if I do like the nickname juno? - not a dealbreaker but it would definitely be a biiiig off putting factor for me, however I do think if you established [name_u]Juno[/name_u] early and stuck with it, it would likely work

does juniper feel like a religious name? - definitely not, I’m really not sure what the religious connotation is!

what other names have the same quirky, hippy, carefree sound as juniper? (I like jupiter but not nearly as much) - [name_f]Bloom[/name_f], [name_u]Briar[/name_u], [name_u]Lark[/name_u], [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_f]Hebe[/name_f], [name_f]Soleil[/name_f], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Indi[/name_u]

any other names that end with the -per sound (besides Piper)? - [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], [name_f]Hesper[/name_f], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]

  1. As in how high [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] could rise? I could see it at #1, honestly. It has everything [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] had back in the day. A sound people love, nicknames [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Junie[/name_f] plus a nature name feel which is popular now.

  2. I could see it at #1 and I’m now wondering whether I understood question #1 correctly

  3. Around 2028-2030 it will be in the top 100. I think around #30-50.

  4. Yes, it is expected. Very popular especially on name boards, but also in real life.

  5. Yes, see above.

  6. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is less expected, it feels less popular and trendy.

  7. Depends. People will call her what you call her while she’s little. But when she is a teenager and wants to be [name_u]June[/name_u] she’ll be [name_u]June[/name_u]. It depends on how much it bothers you. I personally like [name_u]June[/name_u] much better than [name_u]Juno[/name_u]. I don’t think [name_f]Junie[/name_f] is that likely to happen.

  8. No.

  9. I can only think of [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] but it’s not hippy.

  10. [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_u]Love[/name_u].

  11. [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m].

I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. I feel like [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] sounds too similar and it didn’t have a long enough break. It is also the name that always comes up everywhere you go. Still I think if you love it so much you should just go for it.

what do you think is the cap of juniper’s popularity?

I’m wondering if it will sort of follow the pattern of something like [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] or [name_u]Eden[/name_u] - crossing into the 100s (or latter half of the top 100) then falling again? It strikes me as one that could have a moment, though not reaching ever reaching super, super popular levels because while a lot of people like it, I can imagine it also still being met with a lot of  :interrobang: from those who stick to the classics, or, you know, think [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is unusual.

Where do you think her popularity will be around 2028-2030?

On one hand, I’m thinking #80s, on the other, falling back into the #200s (sorry that’s not helpful!)

do you consider juniper to be “expected?” (as opposed to unexpected)

I’d still be surprised to meet a [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]

if not yet, do you think juniper will be an “expected” choice by 2028-2030?

No, I don’t think so. For me, to be ‘expected’, a name needs to be either a long term classic, or, in the top 30 for a few years :person_shrugging:

does juniper seem similarly expected/unexpected, trendy, mainstream, popular as likely sister rowan (g)?

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] feel matched to me in this regard

if I dislike june and junie as nicknames (as in, id be a bit bothered having to call her by either of those, especially junie), should that be a dealbreaker? what if I do like the nickname juno?

Hmm, tough one. Because, as I’m sure you’ve heard a million times before on here, you can’t control what nicknames others will give her or which ones she’ll choose herself. I don’t think it should be a dealbreaker, because, a) if you never call her that, then she might not go for them naturally, and b) once associated with your own [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], they could grow on you, c) you’ve got a solid alternative that you do like

does juniper feel like a religious name?

Not to me

what other names (less popular/trendy) have the same feel (quirky, hippy, carefree) as juniper?
