Nameberry provides 2 pronounciations for [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] and I choose to go by the one that I intuitively used before I saw either pronounciation before my eyes: ev-AN-thee. It gets me to the nickname Ev much easier + I’m a big fan of names with a heavy emphasis on ‘Ev’ beginnings. Is this likely to be a name that is frequently horribly mispronounced? I feel it might be a case of providing one correction, one time and then everyone is good to go but that could just be wishful thinking.
At the time I think [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] Rosalva is incredibly sweet but I also like [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemonda[/name_f] or [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamonde[/name_f]. What other middles would do?
I should say my favorite nickname for her is Ev but I also like Vanthie. Out of those 2 which do you guys prefer?
Evanthe is a stunning name! I’d pronounce it like you, and I think Ev or Evy (Evvie) or Evie (Eevie) are the most intuitive nicknames. Van would be pretty cool too for something more androgynous but I get the feeling you’d prefer something clearly feminine. I’m not wild about Vanthie personally but it certainly works.
I think this really depends on where you live, what the dominant naming culture is and whether people are generally used to encountering unfamiliar names.
I don’t feel that there are any inherently difficult sounds for English speakers, but the spelling may prompt some people to say “ee-vanth” or similar on first try. But it’s a similar pattern to Penelope or Phoebe and people can manage those no problem once they are aware of the correct pronunciation.
Of your combos, I prefer Evanthe Rosamonde — it’s elegant and dramatic and has a beautiful strength and balance. I’d also love Evanthe with lighter, but still unexpected, Rose middles like Wilderose or Primrose.
[name_m]Long[/name_m] time [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] lover here, so thought I’d weigh in.
For pronunciation, I’ve only ever come across Ev-AN-thee (albeit online). It follows the pattern of other similar names, such as [name_f]Evadne[/name_f] or [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f], so I’d be inclined to think it’s correct. I also had a friend encounter it (I’d named a baby sim Evanthe) and she did have to ask/check how it was said, but was fine afterwards. It isn’t all that difficult to say, and I like to think most people might stumble, but quickly get used to it once it’s clarified. Especially if the get to know the person well. That being said, as someone with a (I think) more simple name that has frequently been mispronounced, it isn’t all that awful. Irksome and somewhat annoying? Sure. But it’s never detracted from how much I like my name.
It might be because of the meaning, but I think bright, floral choices are perfect with [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f], so [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] plus [name_f]Ros[/name_f]- names is great! I like the light elegance of Rosalva with ever joyful [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f]. I’d also suggest:
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f] (hel-ay-nuh)
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]
I do think she may be problematic. [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] may be that one kid in class everyone laughs at because the teachers never get her name right. [name_f]Believe[/name_f] me, I AM that kid.
I’m that kid in terms of the last name (Romanian, ends in ui, most people butcher it, I’ve only had one Spanish teacher get it right) so that is why I have the tendency to dwell on if I’m setting my kid up for a future of impossible pronounciation or not
@mea.ola
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] are among my most favored names!! Though for the [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] first name I do favor sunny and bright [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] over [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] (I feel like she carries more moon vibes)
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Wilderose[/name_f] is quite exotic!
I had to look up the other pronunciation to see what you’re talking about. I’ve only ever instinctively and in hearing heard as Ev-an-thee/eh-van-thee
Id say EE-van-thee because thats how I pronounce Eva. Rather than saying it like the beginning of Evan. Is this horribly mispronouncing?
Its quite an unfamiliar sounding name for me!
I would ask some people in your community to read it and see how that goes. My name is Katie which never is mispronounced in the US but is pronounced differently in other countries sometimes, with more of a “Cat” sound.
People can’t pronounce [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]?
I would pronounce it as you do!
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamonde[/name_f] is nice
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_u]Penrose[/name_u]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_u]Greer[/name_u]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] better. [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] is okay though. The [name_u]Evan[/name_u] beginning reminds me of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. Frilly, feminine, but also has a rough feel to it. [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] has a more soft, cold, and gentle feel to it.
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] would be gorgeous.
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Sophronia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Yvette[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Xena[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Xenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Séraphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] Ségolène
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Callia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_u]Lake[/name_u]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Ciara[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Jolie[/name_f]
Ségolène ~ wow, how is this said?
No no my dead name is on all of my papers & stuff
I’m very quiet irl so often it’s friends and shit telling my teachers im trans and I don’t go by that name
Oh my mistake! [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend when I was a sophomore was a Trans male and his birth name was [name_u]Eden[/name_u] but wanted to go by [name_m]Dallon[/name_m] and soo many people (not everyone but ALOT) kept calling him [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and then [name_m]Dallon[/name_m] and then [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and so on. I can’t imagine how frustrating that crap is
@mea.ola
It’s pronounced SEH-GO-LAYNE.
