Ian, Evan, or Owen?

Hello all, not expecting but trying to narrow down my favorites. The names [name]Ian[/name], [name]Evan[/name], and [name]Owen[/name] are all in my top ten (roughly) and I can’t decide which ones to drop or keep. I (and I’m going to assume many others) find them too close to use them all (or even two) so I’d like to pick the one I like the most and would love your opinions!

[name]Owen[/name] - Is the most “meaningful” (my grandfather’s mn), but the one I simply like the least out of the three. This is my fiance’s favorite for a middle name with out top name, [name]Alexander[/name] (though he’d never use it for a first).
[name]Ian[/name] - Also a family name, but not nearly as important and my fiance feels weird about using it. I love the sound and look of [name]Ian[/name] much more than [name]Owen[/name]. I like that it’s less popular than the other two as well.
[name]Evan[/name] - No family connection at all, but the name of a friend of ours who has a great, spunky personality that I connect to every time I think of this name. Probably my favorite “sound wise” and by look as well. This is the only one that fiance has agreed to as a first name as of right now

So what do you think? All opinions welcomed! Can you see using more than one of these in one family as well? Would it be okay to use one as a middle/another as a first? Thanks in advanced!

I like [name]Owen[/name] the best of the three. [name]Ian[/name] would be second and I just don’t care for [name]Evan[/name] at all. [name]Owen[/name] seems like the best since it has the stronget family connection as well.

I do love the name [name]Evan[/name], but I know four little [name]Evans[/name] and my preference automatically goes to the names that have a family connection. So [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Ian[/name] get my vote. They might be a little too similar for brothers, but there would be nothing wrong at all with using both in the middle or one as a first and one as a middle. [name]Owen[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] or [name]Alexander[/name] Own both sound wonderful! From your list, I think [name]Ian[/name] sounds great with [name]Daniel[/name]: [name]Ian[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] or [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Ian[/name].

Wasn’t aware how popular [name]Evan[/name] was for babies these days - though I’m not sure if that would stop be from using it. I do love the family connection behind [name]Owen[/name], but I just don’t know if that’s enough for me to use it. Thanks for your opinions berries!

I like [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Evan[/name] the best

Wasn’t aware how much positive feedback I’d get for [name]Owen[/name], thanks  Keep it coming berries !

I know guys with all three names so I’ll try and block them out and just go on feelings. I do like all of them, and I think they’re pretty solid. They’re all sort of modern classics - names that are familiar but became more popular in recent decades but I wouldn’t call them anything like trendy. [name]Ian[/name] is probably my least favorite. The Eeee-sound at the beginning I actually find a little whiny. I know a great [name]Ian[/name], but the name still doesn’t have the most winning sound for me. [name]Evan[/name] and [name]Owen[/name] are more popular, but I think there’s a reason for that. I think they’re strong but have more pleasant rounded vowel sounds if that names any sense. I like [name]Evan[/name] more than [name]Owen[/name] though - purely personal preference.

[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
[name]Ian[/name]

That’s from favorite to least favorite.

I love [name]Evan[/name]! It’s so classic but not popular. Good choice!

I love these!

  1. [name]Owen[/name]
  2. [name]Evan[/name]
[name]Don[/name]'t really like [name]Ian[/name] much at all, sorry!

Thanks everyone! Should I go with names I think sound better? Or focus on the one’s with family meanings?

You’ll get a different answer from everyone on this, so it really comes down to what’s important to you. Some people like to give their kids new names that they like the sound of instead of reusing family names and others (like me) place more importance on passing down names from their family tree to continue traditions and/or keep in touch, so to speak, with older generations or to honor those that have passed away. It’s really up to you and your spouse and what you feel works best for your preferences. And sometimes it just comes down to what name you like best.

I like [name]Owen[/name] a lot! My favorite by far out of those three and like that it has a family connection.

I love [name]Owen[/name]. Have loved it for ages.

I hate [name]Evan[/name]. A lot. [name]Evan[/name] comes with a particular “type” image for me that I do not care for. [name]Euan[/name]/[name]Ewan[/name] would be okay, but not [name]Evan[/name].

I am middling on [name]Ian[/name]. I’ve known a lovely one and an irritating one, so it’s not people-I-know associations, it’s just I find the sound a bit meh.

I like [name]Evan[/name] the best, followed closely by [name]Owen[/name]. I don’t particularly care for [name]Ian[/name] at all.

[name]Owen[/name] I think!! GL

I wish [name]Owen[/name] was a family name for me - I really love it! I know it’s getting more and more popular, but I haven’t met too many [name]Owen[/name]'s yet and I interact with kids a lot. I’ve never been able to love [name]Ian[/name], even though I feel like I should and I’ve just met soo many [name]Evan[/name]'s that the name has lost its spark for me. It is a nice name though.

For me, I think family trumps sound, but I’d never name my kid a name I didn’t like the sound of.

Strange how most people either love or hate [name]Evan[/name].

My almost 2-year-old is [name]Owen[/name] [name]Charles[/name], so I’m a bit partial. Though [name]Ian[/name] was in our top 10 too. I’m not really a fan of [name]Evan[/name]. What do you think of [name]Ethan[/name]? It’s similar. Though really, if you’re not pregnant yet or planning to be any time soon, your opinions are probably going to change anyway. If you had asked me and my husband what we would have named our son when we were engaged, we would both have sworn up and down that his name was going to be [name]Josiah[/name]. Cue our close friends having a [name]Josiah[/name].

Doesn’t hurt to still ask for opinions does it? Seems a good portion of the posters on here are not expecting and will not be for awhile.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned as I haven’t read through everything but have you considered [name]Ivan[/name]? It seems to sort of bridge your names and I happen to love it… also don’t have to worry about it being too common or dated. [name]Just[/name] a thought. You can’t go wrong with any of your options, I really like them all. I would rank them [name]Owen[/name], [name]Evan[/name] and then [name]Ian[/name].
