Ian names for our son

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,

I’m new here and looking for advice. I’ve got two girls already by my ex and I’m expecting a son with my new partner just before [name_f]Easter[/name_f]. We’d like to honour his father who passed away earlier this year whose name was [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. Neither of us are particularly fond of the name as a whole, but there’s quite a lot of names that have those three letters in and we’ve decided to use one of those to honour him.

The ones we can think of are

[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Adrian[/name_m]
[name_m]Christian[/name_m]
[name_m]Damian[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Cillian[/name_m]
[name_m]Kian[/name_m]
[name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]

and a suggestion from my eldest that we’re definitely not using, [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m].

I’ve got two questions,

  1. Are there any other names with [name_m]Ian[/name_m] in that we’ve missed?
  2. Which are your favourites?

We’re not sure yet whether we’re going to use the name to honour my partner’s father as our son’s first or middle name either, it depends what else we come up with that we like. My daughter’s names are [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] if that makes a difference to anybody.

Hello,

  1. From the top of my head : [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] !
  2. From your list, my favourites for a first name are [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m], with a preference for [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] (without the H!) as it flows well with your daughters’ names.
For a middle name, [name_m]Kian[/name_m] might be the more obvious choice to honour your partner’s father, as it is the name on your list where the -[name_m]IAN[/name_m] combination is the most “visible”, it that makes any sense?

I can’t believe I never thought of [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], francelise, especially as we were throwing [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] around as a girl option before we knew the gender. Definitely going to bring that one up.

My only worry with [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] as a first name is that it’s seen a bit of a ‘dad’ name where I live - I don’t think I’ve encountered anyone under the age of 30 with it. As a middle, I’m of the attitude that ‘anything goes’, no matter how dated or out there it might be, but as a daily name I want something that he’s not going to get teased for.

From your list, I like [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Kian[/name_m], and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m].

Some other ideas:
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_u]Darian[/name_u]
[name_m]Fabian[/name_m]
[name_m]Finnian[/name_m]

That’s all I can think of… I think you got most of them lol.

[name_m]Brian[/name_m]
[name_m]Davian[/name_m]
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_u]Darian[/name_u]
[name_m]Emilian[/name_m]
[name_m]Elian[/name_m]
[name_m]Kian[/name_m]
[name_m]Octavian[/name_m]

I really love [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Cillian[/name_m]/[name_m]Killian[/name_m] (I don’t think the [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] spelling would work well here in [name_u]America[/name_u], but how I love it!), etc. I love the suggestions of [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], too! And I would add the Welsh [name_m]Ianto[/name_m] (omgoodness, love this! I find it better as a mn, though–[name_m]Ianto[/name_m] seems rather daring!) and the softer [name_u]Florian[/name_u] (which I’m majorly crushing over! [name_m]How[/name_m] cool is he?!). There’s also [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] and [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m], which are on the softer side, but still have this regal, poised, stately, Ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m] vibe to them.

From your options, [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] are probably my favorites, but how I hate to leave out [name_m]Cillian[/name_m]!

Did you know that in the super search on NB you and just put in the ending or beginning of letters you like and see what pops up?

I did it for [name_m]Ian[/name_m] (it was just too easy not to) and these are the ones I liked that I found.
[name_m]Bastian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], [name_m]Emiliano[/name_m], [name_m]Fabian[/name_m], [name_m]Halian[/name_m] (if you want to stay with the H theme), [name_m]Ianto[/name_m], [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m], [name_m]Phinian[/name_m], & [name_m]William[/name_m]

PS: I’m sure you did this already. But… I would discuss with my husband what it could mean for your kid to have a different first initial from his two sisters. Is it going to be fine cause they are girls and he’s a boy? Or since they have a different dad, is it potentially going to mark that difference. If you guys have more kids will they all have the same initial as him or just the boys? Honestly, if you plan on more kids I think it doesn’t matter so much as long as #4 doesn’t end up with an H name as well. But if you don’t I would at least consider boys names that start with H-. (I know it would have bugged me as a kid - my SO wouldn’t have even thought about it, but I would have, a lot.)

I really love your concept! Honoring someone you love in your child’s name is the best! Personally I love the name [name_m]Ian[/name_m] for a boy! It’s popular in my area for baby boys. Did you ever think of using another form of [name_m]Ian[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m]? I really like [name_u]Evan[/name_u], [name_m]Gianni[/name_m]*, [name_m]Sean[/name_m], [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Jon[/name_m], [name_m]Giovanni[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]! They are all forms of [name_m]Ian[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m] in another country. My favorite from your choices are [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_m]Kian[/name_m].

Some other names containing “ian” are

[name_m]Bastian[/name_m]
[name_u]Rian[/name_u]
[name_u]Tarian[/name_u]
[name_m]Gian[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyprian[/name_m]
[name_u]Evian[/name_u]
[name_m]Graziano[/name_m]
[name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_m]Emiliano[/name_m]
[name_m]Paciano[/name_m]
[name_m]Ninian[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]
[name_m]Giancarlo[/name_m]
[name_m]Obrian[/name_m]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Cianan[/name_m]

Nameberry also has a great page with boys names ending in “ian”.

Good luck to you!

[name_m]Damian[/name_m] and [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] are great. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] would be my hubby’s fave.

I like [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], [name_m]Octavian[/name_m]. I knew a couple Octavians growing up, who went by [name_m]Tavian[/name_m], which I always found handsome.

There’s also [name_m]Valerian[/name_m], which is interesting, but I’ve always preferred [name_f]Valeria[/name_f]/[name_f]Valeriana[/name_f] for a girl to [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] for a boy.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. We’ve come up with two lists, a first name list and a middle name list.

Firsts:
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]
[name_m]Damian[/name_m]
[name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]

Middles:
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Adrian[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Christian[/name_m]

Now we’ve just got to put these together with the other names that we like and work out what we want to use. Why are boys so difficult to name? We’d got a girl name picked out really early on - [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - and we’ll probably use it if we have a daughter as I’ve loved it since before my eldest was born (ex hated the name, current partner likes it so fingers crossed he does in a few years still!)

[name_m]Kian[/name_m] is absolutely adorable! another good one is [name_m]Finnian[/name_m].
