Ideas on how to honor Marsha?

As some may know, I’m going to be welcoming twins–a boy and girl—into the world in a few months. I’m going nuts trying to name them, and match them with big sister, whose name does not follow my typical style. So youll hear more from me, about trying to name these little ones. But for now…

My aunt [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] ([name_u]Lee[/name_u]) was wonderful in my life. She passed far too young, and for her sake (and my grandmother who has never recovered from the loss) I’d like to honor her. However, I can’t see the appeal of [name_f]Marsha[/name_f], and the meaning is not pleasant. [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is not my thing either. Any ideas on how I can honor her and love it? (I want to love my babies names, that’s really important to me). If I don’t love it, I won’t be able to do it(I didnt have a say in my oldest child’s name, and I am determined I will in these). My grandmother’s name is [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], so if I can’t honor [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] I was thinking of turning to [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]. Thanks for the help!!!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about using an M middle name or her initials to name your daughter? Or, did she have a favorite flower or book that you can use as inspiration for a name?

Might I suggest [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? That can be shortened to [name_f]Maisy[/name_f], which (at least in my opinion) sounds somewhat like [name_f]Marsha[/name_f]. Best of luck with your bundles of joy!

Maybe you could give your child the same initials, or use a name that has ‘mar’ in the first name, and ‘sha’ in the middle name? That way you could still use [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Marta[/name_f] (e.g: [name_f]Mar[/name_f]ta Shalom or [name_f]Mar[/name_f]garet Sasha). [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], from your signature, also has a similar meaning, so that could work nicely too.

names with the same meaning / similar meaning: [name_f]Marcella[/name_f] / [name_f]Marcela[/name_f], [name_f]Malou[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_f]Martine[/name_f], [name_f]Martina[/name_f], [name_f]Aloisia[/name_f], [name_f]Marciana[/name_f].

Similar sound (at least contains the ‘mar’ part): [name_u]Marley[/name_u] (for [name_u]Lee[/name_u] as well?), [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] (ties in the nature theme of [name_u]Lee[/name_u] too?), [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Marilee[/name_f] (adds the ‘lee’ part too), [name_f]Mariel[/name_f], [name_f]Marisa[/name_f], [name_f]Maris[/name_f], [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], [name_f]Mariska[/name_f], [name_f]Marini[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Marta[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Mariana[/name_f], [name_f]Marianna[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], [name_u]Marian[/name_u] / [name_u]Marion[/name_u], [name_f]Maribel[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Marit[/name_f], [name_f]Marielle[/name_f], [name_f]Mariella[/name_f], [name_f]Marcina[/name_f], [name_f]Margalo[/name_f].

Names with ‘sha’ in them: [name_u]Shalom[/name_u], [name_f]Farasha[/name_f], [name_f]Parasha[/name_f], [name_f]Porsha[/name_f], [name_f]Natasha[/name_f], [name_u]Shay[/name_u], [name_f]Asha[/name_f], [name_f]Ashanti[/name_f], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] (has similar meaning to [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] too), [name_f]Adasha[/name_f], [name_f]Dasha[/name_f], [name_u]Misha[/name_u], [name_f]Aisha[/name_f], [name_f]Dosha[/name_f], [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] (technically a boys name, I don’t know whether that would bother you or not), etc.

My first thought was [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] for a boy. Is [name_f]Marsha[/name_f]'s surname an option? [name_u]Marsh[/name_u] or [name_u]Mars[/name_u] could work too if you’re feeling more adventurous.

Here is a list of etymologically related names.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] any appeal to you?

I am in a similar spot trying to honor a [name_f]Marlyn[/name_f] and a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], while not liking [name_f]Martha[/name_f] or [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] or that sort of thing.

Have you considered [name_f]Marlee[/name_f] or [name_u]Marley[/name_u] as a smoosh name?

Some on my list to honor the [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-s are:

[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlena[/name_f]/[name_f]Marlene[/name_f] (I have a close friend with this name, so it’s not on my actual list)
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f] (sounds dumb with my husband’s last name, so ix-nay for me although I love it!)
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] (I know this is one of your honor names, but I listed it anyway)
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Marta[/name_f] (off my list, but you might like it?)
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]/[name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Marilee[/name_f] (off my list because of husband’s name again, but I think it’s quite cute!)
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u]

I also like the idea mentioned previously of having a [name_f]Mar[/name_f]ie Shannon, or similar.

Good luck!

[name_u]Marsh[/name_u] for a boy is a very good idea

@jtucker–Thank you! I am going to look into favorite/birth flowers and things like that

@southern.maple–thank you for the boy suggestions! I hadn’t even considered that. I actually really like [name_u]Marsh[/name_u] as a possible first or middle for little man. Her surname was [name_m]Barnes[/name_m], which won’t work for me, and her maiden name was the same as my last name.

@nooshi—wow, you gave me so much to work with. I love the [name_f]Marta[/name_f] [name_u]Shalom[/name_u] suggestion. That’s going in my current work list for sure. I love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and had forgotten they share a similar meaning—that also has distinct possibility. [name_u]Marley[/name_u] is something I’m going to check out, too, as well as [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], [name_u]Misha[/name_u] and [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]! Thanks again.

@wonderlandian—thank you for the suggestion. I love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisey[/name_f] as a nn, but unfortunately big sissy is [name_u]Casey[/name_u], which is too close in sound for me, as adorable as I think the idea is. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is still a good thought.

@lumen thank you for the link, that’s my next stop!

@ffennec
[name_f]Marilee[/name_f] is so cute—that’s certainly got possibility. I’m checking out [name_u]Marley[/name_u]. I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]–so hard narrowing choices down! Thank you.

All the ones I was going to suggest have been suggested! I just want to say that I love the idea of [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] for a boy and [name_u]Marley[/name_u] for a girl if you want to honor [name_f]Marsha[/name_f]. Or maybe [name_f]Marcie[/name_f]? Anyway, good luck!

My first thought was [name_f]Marcella[/name_f]! Not sure if it’s everyboby’s cup of tea though.

I don’t think I’ve seen [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] mentioned, which I think is such a pretty name anyway and follows the sounds in [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] almost perfectly.

@rj–no, I’ve never heard of that! Great middle potential!

Another one that thought [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] when I read this.

I have a similar scenario and have been looking for ways to incorporate [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] into my next baby’s name. I see that most of the options I have considered have been mentioned already! I’m assuming you would honor [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] in just one of the twin’s names, not both, right?

Boy:
[name_u]Marsh[/name_u] or [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]- I prefer [name_u]Marsh[/name_u], though.
[name_m]Marcus[/name_m] or [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]

Girl:
[name_f]Marcheline[/name_f]- It has a similar sound and I think it is beautiful!
[name_f]Marcella[/name_f]

That’s what I have on my list to honor the [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] in my family

Oh and I love [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] for a boy. There’s a [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] in my daughter’s class and he is so adorable and sweet.

@ofthesea–yes, I’m just looking to honor one of the babies with a twist on [name_f]Marsha[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Marsh[/name_u] for a boy too, [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] seems a bit…militant to me on reflection. [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] is a wholly new idea to me and I’m toying with it. Good luck on your own search with [name_f]Marsha[/name_f] honor names! And how would you pronounce [name_m]Marcel[/name_m]? [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-kel or [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-sel?

Girls’ names:
[name_f]Marin/name_f/[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f]
[name_f]Maris/name_fa
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
Marsali

Boys are tougher:
[name_m]Marek[/name_m]
[name_m]Markos[/name_m]

Good luck!

[name_f]Marcella[/name_f], [name_f]Macy[/name_f], [name_f]Asha[/name_f]?
