Illyria?

I need everything you know about Illyria.

Pronounciation, nicknames, meaning, history.

Give it to me all. This might be my goddaughters name and I think it would be incredible!

Help me convince my best friend that it’s perfect, she and her partner [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it.

Big brothers are [name_u]Raven[/name_u] + Maadix

Oh, I love Illyria too! I was first introduced to the name right here on nameberry. I’ve never been able to find out super much about it which is too bad.

Instinctively I pronounce it Ih [name_u]LEE[/name_u] ree ah, but pronunciations I’ve found online are closer to Ih LEER ya. Either way its lovely. So feminine and beautiful and flowing. So unexpected and unusual, yet very accessible.

Wikipedia says
“In classical antiquity, Illyria was a region in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula inhabited by the Illyrians.
In Greek mythology, the name of Illyria is aetiologically traced to Illyrius, the son of [name_m]Cadmus[/name_m] and [name_f]Harmonia[/name_f], who eventually ruled Illyria and became the eponymous ancestor of the Illyrians.”

I like that it’s an old ancient name with history, even if the meaning is unknown, it gives it substance imo!

I really love Illyria! It has such a beautiful, lyrical sound to it, and some gorgeous, ancient imagery, but translates well into the modern world. I don’t know much about the name, other than its usage as a place, in Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m], but there’s a page here on Nameberry about the name, as well as a Behind the Name (user submitted) entry (User-submitted name Illyria - Behind the Name). I say it as Ih-LIH-ree-uh, with the ‘ih’ sounds said like ‘in’ or ‘it’. If your goddaughter is indeed named Illyria, her parents definitely have exquisite taste! I think I’m starting to crush on it again now haha.

Any middle name ideas? I’d like something significant. Originally it was supposed to be [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] but Illyria [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] might be a little much.

If you can think of any name that honours [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] or [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], that’d be a bonus.

I pronounce it IL-Leer-iya, or something alike. I’m bad at prn. keys.

Illyria [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] isn’t too much. It’s actually very beautiful.
But maybe you would like Illyria [name_f]Kaylie[/name_f] or Illyria [name_f]Zora[/name_f] ([name_f]Dawn[/name_f] in Croatian)

I rather like Illyria [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] too, but I can see where some people would find it too rhyming. Illyria [name_f]Zora[/name_f] is a beautiful suggestion.

Illyria [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] -also too rhyming? [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] is a form of a Persian name meaning “dawn” or “bright.

Illyria [name_f]Sahar[/name_f] -[name_f]Sahar[/name_f] means “dawn” in Arabic. I love the flow and sound of this name and combination!

Illyria [name_u]Kay[/name_u] -the first syllable of [name_f]Kayla[/name_f]. Simple and nice

Illyria [name_f]Aurore[/name_f] -eliminates the double -a endings

Illyria [name_f]Kelila[/name_f] -now this may be a bit random, but behindthename.com says that [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] can be a simplified spelling of a Yiddish name, [name_f]Kaila[/name_f], which is a form of the name [name_f]Kelila[/name_f]. If you/she doesn’t mind an obscure reference I think [name_f]Kelila[/name_f] is a very pretty name!

Illyria [name_f]Kaya[/name_f] -drop one letter of [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] and this beautiful name is left

Illyria is beautiful and sounds enchanting. I’ll give MNs a shot.
