So after our loss in January. We stopped thinking of having a baby and got a puppy () a freaking MONTH later i found out were pregnant with our sticky rainbow!
And now i have a reason to think of baby names for real again lol
Our top (and really only one he likes) boy name is Alistair Shepherd. I like it. But the more i read about the name the more i think about all the mispronounciation issues therell be.
How do you say Alistair? And do you think itll be a pita irl?
Im prone to say al uh stair. But DH says it more like al uh stir. And its making me rethink everything lmao
Can you also hit me with names that give the same vibe (as DH says badass vibes lol) of Alistair that goes well with the mn Shepherd? Tia!!
I tend to say [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] like al-uh-stair, but I think the al-ih-stir pronunciation is just as common (that’s the way it’s pronounced in [name_u]Harry[/name_u] Potter). Ultimately I don’t think it matters which pronunciation you choose, it’ll probably get mispronounced about 50% of the time either way, but what’s most important is that you and your husband get on the same page. If you’re both pronouncing his name differently that may be confusing for the baby and for family and friends who want to know the “correct” pronunciation of his name. If you find yourself unable to pick one, or if either you keep trying to pronounce it one way but find yourself accidentally defaulting back to the other way, it might honestly be easier to just choose a new name altogether to avoid confusion.
Names that I think have a similar vibe to [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]:
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m]
[name_u]Atlas[/name_u]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_u]Onyx[/name_u]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]
Alexian
Olivander
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]
[name_m]Elikai[/name_m]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]
[name_u]Celestin[/name_u]
[name_m]Freyr[/name_m]
[name_m]Riel[/name_m]
[name_m]Tycho[/name_m]
I love [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]! In saying it over and over to myself I think I say it somewhere between how you and your husband say it, maybe leaning more towards his pronunciation. They are very close so I think people will just pick up on how he is introduced and say it that way and it may also depend on where you live. I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] but family is of Scottish heritage so I have met a few Alistairs.
I feel like [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] is a no-nonsense name that won’t pose any lasting issues. [name_f]My[/name_f] own name has pronunciation variations depending where you’re from and what language you speak and it really doesn’t cause me any problems. I turn to all pronunciations of my name!
I intuitively say Alice-stuh but I have a kiwi accent and could be corrected.
This is very unhelpful, but I go back and forth between the pronunciations sometimes I say it as you do, sometimes like your husband. I think you could get away with using both
[name_u]Welcome[/name_u] back ! We are so sorry for your loss , but so excited for you to be continuing on your journey with your rainbow and your puppy
I pronounce [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] the same way you do , but I think it’s common for multiple pronunciations. I don’t think that it is a problem if it’s the name you love
Some other names that remind me of [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] are
I adore [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and we have it on our list for a second !!
Some names that give that I think give me the same vibe/ feeling as [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_u]Julian[/name_u]
[name_m]Preston[/name_m]
[name_m]Chester[/name_m]
Congratulations! I agree with some previous commenters that the multiple pronunciation issue doesn’t seem too problematic. It’s kind of similar to the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], which can be pronounced El-ah-NOR or EL-ah-ner, etc…but is a very popular and easily understood name all the same. [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] sounds great!
Of the other suggestions here, I also like [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], [name_m]Calix[/name_m], Amias…! [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] seems even more confusing pronunciation-wise. Pronounced with the hard c/k sound it sounds like kill to me!
