I’m getting a tortoise tomorrow (land turtle) What should I call him/her?

So far we like [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] and [name_m]Hermes[/name_m].

The name needs to be unisex as you cannot tell their gender until they are adults.

I especially liked [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_u]Hero[/name_u], and [name_u]Dash[/name_u].

DH has got his heart set on Bowser. Not very original (or unisex!) I know. But I have relented. I figure it might be a good basis for negotation when we come to name a human child! (he’s rather picky and had vetoed some awesome names).

As for me. I shall be nicknaming our little tort [name_u]Bo[/name_u]! We are now getting her tomorrow and I’ll post a photo when she is home .

I named mine Stonie and [name_u]Sully[/name_u] which is pretty unisex. I like the name [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] because Jupe is so cute. What kind are you getting?

Those are cute little tortoises. I’ve had my eye set on a leopard tortoise for some time now, I’m just waiting to get a place with a yard so I can build it an outdoor pen area and let it live outdoors (since the weather here is so perfect for them.)

Yes he is my first tortoise and our first pet as a married couple.

He is a Western [name_m]Hermann[/name_m] t.hermanii hermanii which is the smaller of the two subspecies.

We live in the uk so he will live inside with a heat/uv lamp over his tortoise table.

I’ve got my eye on a lovely little tortoise run for the garden so he can get out and about safely.

Going to start growing some pansies to feed him!

Any advice you would give me?

I collect him tomorrow morning.

Tortoises love dandelion leaves, and these are actually full of nutrition so if you have them growing in your yard as weeds, perfect! And they will trip over themselves for anything red or orange, so things like bell peppers, carrots, beet, etc. are all foods they go crazy for. Fruit should be a treat due to sugar content, but give a tortoise a strawberry and you can just see their little hearts light up with joy!

[name_f]My[/name_f] only big tip is to remove any uneaten food before you go to bed. Tortoises will poop where they eat so if you let their dish of food, which may have water added (some people spray their food with water so they drink and eat simultaneously), and poop sit overnight, he will start eating from that as soon as he wakes up and this makes them sick.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] make sure your lawn isn’t sprayed with any chemicals! This goes for both human and non-human animal consumption of foraged food. :slight_smile:
