Beautiful imagery.
My knowledge of names is quite limited, however my favourite place to ski is Andorra, and it is such a beautiful albeit small country that to me fits some of the imagery. I also like it’s possible nn of Anna, Annie, Andie, Dori and Dora
How about?:
Andorra Niamh
Andorra Celeste
Andorra Estelle
Andorra Lux
I also like the combos of:
Aurora Estelle
Aurelia Noor
Aurelia Estelle
Lyra Aurelia
Celestine Lux
Celestine Noor
I love some of these names! [name_f]Alba[/name_f], [name_f]Lux[/name_f], [name_f]Galatea[/name_f] [name_f]Swan[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneira[/name_f] [name_f]Swan[/name_f] (swoon!), [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] (I also like Lumen), [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Lune[/name_f] (I really love the idea of [name_f]Lune[/name_f]!), [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] (I can’t decide if I prefer [name_f]Indira[/name_f] or [name_u]Indigo[/name_u]!), [name_f]Oceane[/name_f]… So many great names, thank you!
I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people saying that my [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] combo evokes this kind of image, and also [name_f]Aria[/name_f] [name_f]Solstice[/name_f]
@tanaquil- I love Adastra! [name_m]How[/name_m] is it pronounced, [name_m]Ah[/name_m] Das trah? It sounds so starry and beautiful.
I’m also very curious about the pronunciations of Chione/Chionia/Quionia.
Diamanda is very intriguing also, because I love the name [name_f]Diamond[/name_f] also. [name_u]Lior[/name_u], [name_f]Lumi[/name_f], Lumia and Solace are also beautiful and delicate. I love the potential of the nickname [name_m]Sol[/name_m] for Solace.
@shanade213- If I’d love compound names or double names, I’d definitely go for [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f]! The meaning alone makes it a winner for me :). I find Eider and Kallik very interesting ideas I’ve never considered before.
@namechange93- So many, many gorgeous names. I cannot list them all, but the two that particularly stood out to me were [name_f]Aurore[/name_f] and [name_f]Vespera[/name_f]. Both stunning variants of names I’ve loved and considered! Evergreen and [name_f]Moon[/name_f] are two guilty pleasure names for me! I would maybe maybe use them in the middle, but I doubt SO would ever go for them anyway.
@mccharlie- I absolutely love [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] so much. I just don’t quite know if I could pull it off, I don’t mind place names, but this one feels so… obvious? Like river names or city names are slightly less obvious and conspicuous then a state name.
I’m also really liking [name_f]Nayeli[/name_f]. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before, but it’s so pretty! And such a lovely meaning.
Meige is pretty too, what does it mean or where does it originate?
Ezrie ([name_u]Ezri[/name_u], Esri?) and Stellis are cool. I always wonder about the history and legitimacy behind [name_u]Ezri[/name_u]. Stellis sounds like a boys name to me, a cool, unusual alternative to [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]!
[name_u]River[/name_u] is a favourite of mine! Ismeria is also a recent love that I discovered on nameberry. I’ve never heard Nymeria tho, that’s an intriguing one!
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] … not sure why, just feels clean & crisp, yet strong and feminine. Evokes a similar feeling to [name_f]Azura[/name_f] [name_f]Star[/name_f].
Thank you for coming and commenting, [name_u]Ash[/name_u]! I do love your idea of using [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] in the middle! [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]? Is it too long? [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]? I’m going to have to contemplate that.
I had never considered [name_u]Denali[/name_u] or [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u] before! I’m really liking the idea of [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u], I definitely prefer it on a boy too! [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u] [name_m]Levi[/name_m] or [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] even. I like the more classic, masculine middle names with [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u], since it’s a very unisex maybe even feminine leaning name.
Haha, I (jokingly!) suggested to my SO the other day that if we’d have boy/girl twins (he’s really enthused about the idea of twins, a lot more then I am!!) we could name them [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and Borealis. I do love Borealis, it just feels like a big name. I have a hard time pairing it up with something that doesn’t make it feel over the top. [name_m]Just[/name_m] had an inspiration now, maybe [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] Borealis or [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] Boreal?
I love [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] more and more. The sound, the look, the associations. Right now I feel like it’s more middle name materia for me, but eventually not everything can be middle names! I need some first names. LOL. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] [name_f]Alaska[/name_f]?
Thank you so much, and I would love to hear if you have any more ideas or inspiration! [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to message or post again :).
@lulu_82 I have never considered [name_f]Andorra[/name_f] as a name before, but it seems like a great choice, seeing as it rhymes with one of my favourites, [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]! I’m not always a fan of obscure nicknaming, but somehow I can imagine naming [name_u]Peyton[/name_u] [name_f]Andorra[/name_f] or [name_u]Paisley[/name_u] [name_f]Andorra[/name_f] and calling her [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] or Panda for a nickname!
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] [name_f]Noor[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Celestine[/name_f] [name_f]Noor[/name_f] are gorgeous and definitely fit the dark, starry night imagery.
@fullabeans I completely agree on [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Aria[/name_f] [name_f]Solstice[/name_f]! So, so lovely :).
@a_r Eirwen, Eirlys, Endzela and [name_f]Asteria[/name_f] are so beautiful and intriguing! Where did you find the name Endzela? I think [name_f]Asteria[/name_f] is a gorgeous alternative to [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]! It sounds so starry.
@dalolud I know what you mean about [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]! [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] has much the same feel and look as [name_f]Azura[/name_f]…
@columbiacharm - I found it on behindthename, which is where I checked the meanings of the other snowy names too. Some of the names I listed don’t have snowy meanings, though (mostly the Scandinavian ones & Crispina).
Apparently Endzela means ‘snowdrop’ (as in the flower, not the white stuff) in Georgian. Eirlys = snowdrop (Welsh), Eirwen = white snow (Welsh).
Ha, well, rather embarrassingly, I find I appear to have made Lucendrie up. Which seems strange, because I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it before, either on the NB forums a few years back or somewhere else. But I can’t find a mention anywhere! Apparently [name_m]Lago[/name_m] di Lucendro is a reservoir in Switzerland, and there’s also a peak of that name in the Swiss Alps, but that’s all I can find.
Some more names that I don’t think have been mentioned -
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f]
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_u]Lou[/name_u] / [name_f]Louella[/name_f]
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]
[name_f]Ferelith[/name_f]
[name_f]India[/name_f] / [name_f]Indira[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnet[/name_f] ([name_f]LINN[/name_f]-it, not linn-ET = [name_f]Lynette[/name_f])
[name_f]Araluen[/name_f] (may have suggested this before . . .)
[name_f]Lucasta[/name_f] / [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Orabel[/name_f]
Edelweiss
Ness
[name_f]Maura[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
Belphoebe
[name_f]Melicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Grainne[/name_f] (gron-ya/grawn-ya I believe)
[name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Severine[/name_f]
[name_f]Novalie[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] / [name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
Here are the names that come to mind with that:
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Britta[/name_f]
[name_f]Callista[/name_f]
[name_f]Carina[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Leia[/name_f] / [name_f]Leila[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
Wonderful, wonderful suggestions! I have fallen so fast in love with Zaffre, that it is headed straight to my short list! Probably as a middle name because it is quite similar to a close relatives name, but I absolutely adore Zaffre. I don’t recall ever hearing the colour before, or hearing it as a name, but I looked up the meaning and pronunciation and fell in love! I have a really soft spot for “blue” names. [name_u]Blue[/name_u], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_f]Azure[/name_f] (and [name_u]Sky[/name_u]!) and now Zaffre are all on my short list! Thank you so much!
I’m glad you like Adastra too! It’s a Latin phrase, as in per aspera ad astra, “through hardships to the stars.” As a name it’s more or less made-up, though. I’ve been pronouncing it “add AST ra” in my head, with short A sounds. I suppose that sounds a bit like “disastrous” though - Adastra Disastra! Hmm, maybe “uh DAS tra,” “odd [name_m]AH[/name_m] strah?” I think the Latin pronunciation might be “ah DAH strah?” It also resembles Adrastea, a name from Greek myth.
I believe Chione is “ky OH nee” rhyming with [name_u]Dione[/name_u]; I think “[name_m]KY[/name_m] uh nee” would work too. Chionia was the name of a saint martyred in the early 4th century with her sisters Agape, love, and [name_f]Irene[/name_f], peace. Chionia’s name, which literally means “snow” in Greek, is sometimes said to figuratively mean “purity,” probably as in “as pure as snow,” so together the three sisters Agape, [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and Chionia were [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_u]Peace[/name_u] and [name_f]Purity[/name_f]. Chionia has been used in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and I think the Italian pronunciation would be “kee OH nyah.” There’s also a Russian form, Khioniya - “kee [name_m]AH[/name_m] nee yah?” Quionia is the Spanish form and I think it’s also “kee OH nyah.”
I got the idea of Diamanda from Diamanda [name_u]Gal[/name_u]ás, who is Greek-American - I assume it’s Greek, like [name_f]Diamantina[/name_f]? [name_f]Diamond[/name_f] is pretty. And I like Solace too, I think it’s very usable and unusual without being strange. I found this old marriage announcement that mentions it: http://www.nytimes.com/1964/06/20/solace-wales-married-to-william-sheets-jr.html
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to have been of help!! I’ve also never heard it as a name before, I was just scouting for tones of blue that might work as a name and found that one on Wikipedia haha. Maybe check those out yourself, as well!
Looking for a name it would work well with -
[name_f]Azura[/name_f] [name_f]Star[/name_f] and [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] Zaffre.
I really love that these names mean more or less the same thing, but inverted. And I also think [name_f]Azura[/name_f] and [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] work well, if you don’t mind that they both start with the same letter - I think the sound is different enough for that to be kind of cute, actually.
@morning_glory I don’t think that’s embarrassing that you maybe made Lucendrie up, but ai do think its funny!!
I love [name_f]Endellion[/name_f] and [name_f]Indira[/name_f]. [name_f]Araluen[/name_f] is on my top three names for girls! I just can’t find the perfect middle name. Something not too long, and not too common but not to out there. I wasn’t sure [name_f]Araluen[/name_f] quite fit the imagery, it’s maybe a little more green and lush as opposed to my icy, blue names. But I’m happy if you think it works!
That’s funny you mention [name_f]Diana[/name_f], as she is somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine. For some reason I can’t resist the name, although it’s quite far from my usual style and I have no real connections to it. I do admire the late [name_f]Diana[/name_f], princess of [name_m]Wales[/name_m], tho.
@tanaquil Thank you for all the information and help!
@gondolin I did go check out those blue names! Thank you.
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] Zaffre is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the meaning. I don’t want to end up with all my children’s names starting with the same letter, but if two of out three or four do that’s not a deal breaker to me. The problem is that so many of my favourite girl names start with A! [name_f]Azura[/name_f], [name_f]Araluen[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Astraea[/name_f], [name_f]Astara[/name_f], Asteira and [name_f]Alaska[/name_f]. I can’t use them all!
Thank you all once again, you have been brilliant!
