Imogen?

I truly do not understand why so many people on naming forums like the name [name]Imogen[/name], I strongly dislike it. [name]Imogen[/name] sounds like a disease to me or a code name for biological weapon. “The [name]Imogen[/name] Strain”, sequel to “The [name]Andromeda[/name] Strain”. Maybe I am mispronouncing it? Is it ee-moe as in the 3 Stooges [name]Moe[/name]-gin as in the alcohol, ee-moe-gin? If I am pronouncing it correctly, then please enlighten me as to why you like this name. There’s names I don’t like but this is one I just [name]DON[/name]'T GET.

As someone who adores this name, I had to jump in with a reply!

There’s a more thorough explanation on the page for the name [name]Imogen[/name] on this site, but it’s typically pronounced IMM-uh-gin – “imm” as in “him,” light emphasis on the second syllable, third syllable as you had it. It’s old-fashioned, to be sure, but hardly clinical. The softness of the short i sound at the beginning coupled with the soft g, plus the sweet nickname [name]Ginny[/name], keeps it light and feminine but still different from the norm.

Most of that is just my opinion, though, of course! The pronunciation is what you were looking for, and there it is. [name]Judge[/name] for yourself!

I dislike it immensely as well, it sounds sort of like imagine mispronounced, all of the prn’s [name]Ive[/name] heard on forvo sound unattractive to me as well Pronunciations for imogen (from Imogen Heap to Imogen Cunningham). Also, I agree it sounds clinical, I dont care if it’s old fashioned [name]Imogen[/name] sounds likes a disease, type of rock or prescription medication.

For the life of me I cannot picture it on a smart, confident and sophisticated woman. Only a short, plump, dowdy loner type. I am sort of surpised that [name]Imogene[/name] never comes up on the boards since it is slightly more attractive sounding.

I guess we all have names that we love and others dislike. Sorry to offend any parents of Imogens out there, Im sure if I met one it would at least change the mental picture I have of them.

Its personally nms and I dont see the appeal. However I dont hate it, I think there are worst names for children.

I think it is a lovely name and we will very likely name one of our daughters [name]Imogen[/name], depending on whether we have more than one girl or not. Each to their own, though. I have a very English heritage, also I am from New Zealand and will be living in Australia and [name]Imogen[/name] seems to get a more favourable reaction in those countries than in the USA.

I am between both groups, I think. I see [name]Imogen[/name]‘s appeal, and I actually really like it–it’s understated, classic, sweet, and definitely underused in the US, but it also feels a tad bit boring as a FN for me, even though [name]Immy[/name] and [name]Gen[/name]/[name]Ginny[/name] are adorable nicknames for it. I usually find it the most appealing as a MN–[name]Daphne[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] is on my top 10 currently, and [name]Arianne[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] used to be my second favorite girls’ name (almost a year ago it was replaced with [name]Arianne[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Kate[/name]).

I like it a lot, but I am pretty sure I’ll never use it–not as a FN, and it’s far enough down on my list that it’s fairly likely I won’t use it as a MN, either, unless I fall for [name]Arianne[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] all over again. I love seeing others consider it, though!

I think it’s a beautiful name when pronounced Im-eh-jen which I believe is a British pronunciation.

[name]Trust[/name] me, I don’t see the appeal AT ALL. It doesn’t sound like a name, it sounds like you’re mispronouncing “imagine”. I can’t imagine it on any adult. I can only hope it’s somehow made more charming with a British accent.

I think that this is another name that is destroyed by some american accents.

'im-uh-jn is a beautiful name with cute nicknames and a nice meaning.

Spelt [name]Imogene[/name] the extra e gives one of the american pronunciations im-oh-geen which doesn’t sound very nice to my ear.

I love this name - but each to their own.

It’s im-uh-jen. I think it sounds clinical saying it ee-MOH-jen like you were too. I’m from the southern US and I HATE the pronunciation im-uh-jeen.

I like the name well enough, but I can see why some people don’t.

That sound much better than how I’ve been pronouncing it, thank you for the reply!

[name]True[/name] enough. I probably should have mentioned my country (USA) as that undoubtedly affects my opinion on various names.

That would be a lovely connection for your daughter! I however cannot say it the way you are for the life of me, sorry.

Accents absolutely make a difference when it comes to names. I love it when Spanish people say my first daughter’s name-it’s so pretty how they pronounce it.

Thank you for all the replies! Now that I know how it is CORRECTLY pronounced I actually quite like it. However I cannot say it right. Maybe with practice. I’ve been mispronouncing it wrong for quite some time so kind of a mental block in the way. [name]Glad[/name] I started the thread.

@ashthedreamer: [name]Arianne[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] is a name I think I could get behind even though I dont care for them individually, it just has such a good flow.
