Imogenn, Imogyn, or Imogen

Okay this is the last post I will make about the name Imogen I promise

I posted in various baby name groups asking how they pronounce Imogen to gauge how often it’d be mispronounced and while I expected the O to be over emphasized, it was, I noticed most people would say it just like Imogene which we do not like. I can deal with Im-OH-gen but Im-oh-GEEN bothers me a wee bit. I went to school with a Morgann and I always liked her name so that made me think maybe adding another N would emphasize the GEN ending. Imogyn might work too but idk I can’t see GYN without thinking OBGYN :joy:

Imogenn Ivy Renee S__ton
VS
Imogyn Ivy Renee S__ton
VS
Imogen Ivy Renee S__ton

Do you think it would help to change the spelling? Which do you prefer?

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] sounds lovely!

So before even reading what your wrote I looked at the three spellings……

And read Imogyn as I’m OBGYN.

I do think imogen kind of is reminiscent to “Imagine” BUT a the double N just seems like a misspelling. I’d stick with [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] personally.

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is beautiful and this is my favourite spelling

The other spellings look off

I’d go with [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], which I’d pronounce Im-oh-gen. [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] is a lovely combo!

I’d stick to [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you get some pronunciation issues (which to be honest I think you still would with Imogenn and Imogyn) at least it uses the more familiar spelling. [name_f]My[/name_f] name gets mispronounced a lot (Celia, constantly misheard as Sylvia) and it’s never bothered me.

I vastly prefer Imogen of the three!

Stick with the classic since I don’t think a different spelling will help.

Imajenn looks kinda cute though if Im honest :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I pronounce it “IM-uh-jen” the way Nameberry states it. I found the name on NB and had never remembered hearing it before but liked it was rare (in the US) but common sounding as it closely sounds like Emma-Jen. It does seem like people stress the O commonly but I don’t think casually said (not trying emphasize the syllables) it sounds drastically differently like [name_f]Imogene[/name_f] (in which the O should be stressed because of how the ending E affects vowels) the -gene and -gen really changes the name for me so I don’t like that people pronounce them the same.

Imajenn isn’t awful, but my best friend’s name is [name_f]Jen[/name_f] and I want to keep the G so it’s not as much of a stretch to call her [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as obviously Jen/Jenny would be confusing with Auntie [name_f]Jen[/name_f] :joy:
We’d more likely call her Immy/Idgie but still want to leave options open for the child to have options.

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f].

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f], the standard spelling. The O turns into a schwa (“uh”) when I say it - IMM-uh-jin.

I totally forgot schwas were a thing, thank you for helping me make sense when I try to explain how the O makes an “uh” sound :joy:

I would say that the same way as how I wrote it out, I’m not from the US and I’ve only met one Imogen. I agree the the -gene or -gen ending really does change it up.

I don’t think changing the spelling would help tbh. [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] looks best and nicest, and I think it would be a simple correction to make. (I knew an [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] Eh-leh-NOR, who would very quickly correct anyone who said Eh-leh-nuh and after that, people would pn it right)

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. The others are pointless.

imogen :sunflower:

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] for sure. I’ve loved this name for years and wanted to use it for both of my daughters 10 and 7 years ago, but was talked out of it each time by people pronouncing it like [name_f]Imogene[/name_f]. Ugh! I live in the southern US and think it’s even more prevalent here than other parts of the US. Not to mention, any time I mentioned the name in these parts people looked at me like I was insane for even considering it, like it was the ugliest name possible. I still think it’s lovely and it’s still one of my favorite names. :person_shrugging: [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] is beautiful.
