I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect name for our third little girl pretty much since the second one was born, but haven’t come across THE name yet. Yesterday I met a girl named Finna and my husband and I both immediately fell in love with it. When i got home, I looked it up and was upset to find that it may not be a “real” name (meaning a name with historical roots or widespread recognized usage in at least one part of the world). Apparently there’s also some American southern slang meaning for Finna, but I’m American and I have never heard anything about this in my life!
I just love the name and the nick naming/pet name possibilities of [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and Finny. What do you think? Is it useable? Or too made up?
It’s a cute sound, but I’d suggest thinking about [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] or [name_f]Finola[/name_f]. It is indeed a slang word, basically meaning “gonna” (I’m 20 and I hear it fairly often among people my age).
I heard this name a lot around me, but as [name_f]Fina[/name_f] or [name_f]Vina[/name_f]. I guess it was initially a short for something else, but later became a stand alone (kinda like [name_f]Beth[/name_f] from [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]).
I also agree with posters above. I think it’s not made up, but a feminine variant from [name_u]Finn[/name_u]/Finnr. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] nn Finnz is a great idea though, if you’re still not sure.
I know the use of it as ‘slang’ but it’s not purely young people, it’s old usage in some parts of the US in some circles.
It doesn’t mean anything terrible though so if you don’t care about that it’s not a big deal.
[name_f]Finola[/name_f], [name_f]Fionola[/name_f], [name_f]Fionnuala[/name_f] etc. are certainly real names if you’re worried about that. http://www.behindthename.com/name/finola
I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is rather masculine sounding for my taste but that’s me.
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], as several have suggested.
We did consider [name_f]Fenna[/name_f] for our second daughter (who ended up [name_f]Lula[/name_f]), but there’s just something about Finna that I love!
I think it’s lovely! [name_m]Light[/name_m] and fresh.
I love this shape of name though: [name_f]Fenna[/name_f], [name_f]Minna[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Calla[/name_f], [name_f]Lilla[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], etc. etc. etc.
It is a quite popular slang word meaning “gonna/trying to” (it’s hard to explain out of context). It’s more popular in some communities and not used at all in others, but if you love it, use it.
I feel like a lot of names have some other meaning in other contexts or other languages. I have literally never heard anyone say “finna” in some sort of sang way so I’m ok with using it for a name. If I was part of a community that used it in that way, it might be a different story!
