DH and I are just starting ttc, and I am realizing that if we have a baby we will only be able to use ONE name! So I am re-evaluating my boy name list at the moment. DH has Scandinavian heritage, and I have Dutch heritage, and we’d like to incorporate that into our children’s names. My list of Scandinavian names for boys could use some help! Our top pick atm is Emrik. Also on our list are:
What about any of these names?
[name_m]Viktor[/name_m]
[name_m]Dag[/name_m]
Jarl
[name_m]Anders[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
Klas
[name_m]Emil[/name_m]
[name_m]Stig[/name_m]
[name_m]Sten[/name_m]
[name_m]Tor[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Henning[/name_m]
[name_m]Henrik[/name_m]
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_m]Imre[/name_m]
Vide
[name_m]Anton[/name_m]
Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions so far!
@southern.maple, good lists! Many in the particulars/spectaculars lists are new to me, so I will have to do some digging and let some of them stew. I really like Kjell (actually love Kjella for a girl) but the pronunciation is killing us. I wish it were pronounced with a ky- sound, but I read it is between a ch- and sh- sound, which I am not as fond of.
@daphodil, we both love [name_m]Emil[/name_m], [name_m]Johannes[/name_m], and [name_m]Fredrik[/name_m]! I’m worried that [name_m]Emil[/name_m] sounds too Roman or something, though. [name_m]Johannes[/name_m] is at the top of our Dutch boys name list. I like [name_m]Aksel[/name_m], but my [name_m]SIL[/name_m] has sort of claimed it, and I don’t like the trendiness of [name_m]Axel[/name_m]. I am intrigued by [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] and [name_m]Knut[/name_m] - can you tell me how these are pronounced?
@dragon_flame, DH always liked [name_m]Soren[/name_m], but for me, the association with Kierkegaard has been too strong. any way to help me move past that? I like [name_m]Sven[/name_m], but it is unfortunately already used for a family friend.
@aw, I like [name_m]Viktor[/name_m] but DH doesn’t seem to, and I like [name_m]Anders[/name_m], but DH says it is too close to his mn, [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]. [name_m]Imre[/name_m] is interesting. Nameberry says it is Hungarian?
I don’t think [name_m]Emil[/name_m] is too [name_m]Roman[/name_m] at all. Here in Scandinavia it’s mostly associated with [name_m]Emil[/name_m] i Lönneberga by [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren. It’s a very popular top 10 name where I live [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] is pronounced rang-nahr (though I think most foreigners say ‘rag-nahr’), and [name_m]Knut[/name_m] is like ‘knoot’. I also saw that you like Kjell, but agree that the pronunciation is tricky. The first syllable is pronounced very similarly to the word ‘czech’.
@daphodil, Thanks for the encouragement about [name_m]Emil[/name_m]! I think it is going on our list. Also thanks for the pronunciation help. [name_m]Will[/name_m] have to stew on those.
@aw, I really like [name_m]Pelle[/name_m]. We’ve considered it (and [name_m]Per[/name_m]) as potential nns for [name_m]Pieter[/name_m]. DH thinks it’s too much of a stretch, though. Also like [name_m]Lars[/name_m] and [name_m]Kalle[/name_m], but those are taken by family. Like [name_m]Andreas[/name_m], too, but again DH doesn’t like it because of his mn [name_m]Andrew[/name_m].
