I’m thinking about using Independence as a first name if the baby is a girl. I have troubles coming up with a middle name though. I was thinking Independence [name_f]Briar[/name_f] or Independence [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but I’m not really liking any of them.
I can’t say I’m a fan of Independence. It’s a lot of name for a little girl, and makes me think of the [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] Clarkson song “Miss Independence.”
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], or [name_f]Constance[/name_f], if you like virtue names?
jordynnj - I’m not really into virtue names, I just happened to like this one.
bellerose - I plan on using [name_f]Indi[/name_f]/[name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nn I was thinking about independence rue as well, but tha struck me as a bit too much and a bit silly. independence street might not be the best name for a little girl. I [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] like the combos with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Bee[/name_f] though
Independence isn’t my style but I’ve heard worse word names. Since it is a word, unisex and a little out-of-the-ordinary, I would pair it with a more established, shorter female middle name rather than a second word like [name_f]Briar[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
mischa - yeah i kind of agree with you. The problem is though…i don’t like a lot of those classic and established names.
I like [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f], but I don’t think [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] sounds that good with Independence. maybe [name_f]Lila[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f]… I like that [name_f]Molly[/name_f] has the HP association just as my daughter’s middle name
I don’t like it at all but I know you didn’t ask for opinions. I do like [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] and names meaning freedom, like [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] (seer-sha), and I do really like it for a middle name. You like [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and they all go great as a first with Independence as a middle. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] Independence is very cool, same with [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] Independence, [name_f]Lila[/name_f] Independence and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] Independence.
Maybe:
Independence [name_f]Wren[/name_f]
Independence [name_f]Larue[/name_f]
Independence [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
Independence [name_f]Margo[/name_f]
Independence [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - if you wanted something long
You could get really cheesy and do Independence [name_f]Eve[/name_f] or Independence [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] as they both sound lovely but are just too much to me.
I think Independence is a lot for a kid to carry–it reminds me of [name_f]Temperance[/name_f]. Weighty.
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] Independence works for me.
For a stylistic fit and subtler connection to [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], I like the idea of using [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], or [name_f]Helena[/name_f] for a middle. (Plus [name_f]Helena[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Helena[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermia[/name_f] in Midsummer [name_m]Night[/name_m]'s [name_u]Dream[/name_u], which is nice.)
But, all of those get rather long with Independence. If you decide on that, then I’d lean towards something more like Independence [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or Independence [name_f]Molly[/name_f].
I also find that I feel like I’m calling the kid independent, as in oh that’s our independent [name_f]Katie[/name_f] our our independent [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. Some word-middles seem to make it better–Independence [name_f]Briar[/name_f] works, but Independence [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] feels like I’m talking about a little flower that got handed out on the 4th of [name_f]July[/name_f].
rkrd - [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is awesome! I have [name_f]Nova[/name_f] on my list too but I hadn’t thought about it as a middle for independence, thanks!
jonathon - I don’t like [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] at all. Independence has a special meaning to me, but I know everyone wont like it. I kinda like [name_f]Wren[/name_f], but not enough to use it I think. I wont use [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f] or something like that
brigid16 - I actually like a lot of those. when I had my daughter I planned on giving all my kids middle names from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. not so sure about that now though but i like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] and some others. I know it’s a long name, so if I go with independence I will use [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nickname.
cosmonaut - ohh, i hadn’t thought about penny! i’m afraid most people will assume she’s penelope though. but it’s a nice nickname. but yeah, super hard to find a good middle name…
gabriela - i didn’t ask for opinions. but since you’re not asking either, I think gabriela is a horrible name.
I actually like Independence as a name. It’s surprising and I didn’t ever really think of it as a name until I saw your post. [name_f]Indie[/name_f] and [name_u]Penny[/name_u] are great nick names. I definitely think she would need a more classic middle though. I like Independence [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] Weasly is one of my favorite HP characters, she would be an awesome namesake for a little girl too. I also like Independence [name_f]Luna[/name_f], but with Independence I feel like the middle name should be as un-wordy as possible. (that’s why I’m not suggesting Independence [name_f]Lily[/name_f], great HP association but to wordy with Independence.) The flow of Independence [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is good though. What about Independence [name_f]Genevra[/name_f]? Or just Independence [name_f]Gen[/name_f]?
It’s really NMS but I can see it working as a name. Something obviously femenine would work best in the middle and maybe try to avoid another name that’s too “wordy”
I second the nickname idea of [name_u]Penny[/name_u]. In the American Girl books, [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] names a horse Independence and calls her [name_u]Penny[/name_u], if I remember correctly. To me it just seems a natural nickname for Independence. As for middle name ideas, do you live in the United States? If so, I recommend a name with some patriotic meaning, such as:
Independence [name_f]Frances[/name_f] ([name_u]Francis[/name_u] [name_m]Scott[/name_m] Key wrote the national anthem…a bit of a tongue-twister name though)
Independence [name_f]Emma[/name_f] ([name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] wrote the poem inscribed on a plaque in front of the Statue of [name_f]Liberty[/name_f])
Independence [name_f]Martha[/name_f] ([name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_m]Washington[/name_m])
Etc.
jazz1509 - I like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] I think the baby’s dad had a great grandmother named [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but I don’t know if he cares about that.
alzora - yeah I live in the US. thanks for the suggestions, but I didn’t really like any of them…
