India?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]India[/name_f] as a name for a girl or is it too much of a ‘‘country name’’?

I think it is too related to the country unless you have family/ancestry ties to [name_f]India[/name_f], or have spent time there. It is a pretty name though.

Yes, I think its a very pretty name but if you have worries about it being to close to the country, you could go for [name_u]Indie[/name_u] or something

Like [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] or [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]!

It’s a pretty name but I would assume the country was in some way significant to you

I LOVE the name [name_f]India[/name_f]!

It’s a gorgeous name imo! I go to school with several ladies from [name_f]India[/name_f], and they were talking one day about meeting a Canadian girl named [name_f]India[/name_f], and they thought it was flattering, like someone loved their country enough to name their daughter after it? Obviously, not everyone would feel this way, but it was super interesting to see their reaction!

I don’t agree with the history of using the name [name_f]India[/name_f] by white people especially. It strongly stems from colonialism and if you are not [name_f]Indian[/name_f] yourself I would not use it.

I agree with @Kipperbo1 it’s a beautiful name but I think caucasian people using the name [name_f]India[/name_f] is too tied with colonialism. I feel if you don’t have [name_f]Indian[/name_f] heritage then I wouldn’t use [name_f]India[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] or [name_u]Indie[/name_u] though.

Too much the country, especially on a non-asian child. [name_u]Indie[/name_u] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] are good alternatives.

I am with most of the others (so eloquently put by @WhiteGardenia and @Kipperbo1!)–I have considered it myself, both for my [name_f]Indian[/name_f] ancestors I wish I’d known, and also my family’s military background (love the idea of using a name like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_u]Sierra[/name_u], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], Zulu to honor my family’s military service), but it just seemed like the connections weren’t strong enough to feel comfortable risking a name that could be so offensive to some. I know [name_u]Haley[/name_u] knows some who find it very flattering; there have been a handful of others I’ve come across that were very offended by it.

It’s a nice idea but we live in such an international world these days and I would hate to do anything that would bring offense/hurt to someone, especially since I am (mostly) white and people of color have faced enough from those who share my skin color.

I can’t say I care for [name_f]India[/name_f]. For me it’s very tied to the country, and unless you’re of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] heritage, it just seems odd to me. But statistically it’s one of the more common country names.

My gut instinct tells me @Kipperbo1 is right. Maybe [name_u]Indie[/name_u] would be a better choice

Thank you everyone for replying. I agree with you completely. I like the sound of the name but always find myself cringing on the inside when I hear it used by white parents. I was wondering how others, especially on here, felt about it.

Reminds me of the name [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] or of india ink. I think it’s a cute name and not too much of a country name. [name_f]China[/name_f] is a different story for me… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Country name.
