I’m looking for suggestions for a name for our baby boy due later this year. Hubby is from India and I am Australian. The name needs to be an Indian name, but at the time I don’t want anything “too Indian” so that it will be hard for people to pronounce (we live in Australia), or a name people have never heard of, or could easily be made fun of (e.g. Hardik).
So far we have a few ideas but not “the one”.
Arjun
Ashwin
Ivaan
Kabir
Kian/Kiaan
Rayan
Rohan
I’ve also seen people use Ryan, Noah and Nathan for Indian boys but not sure if these are truly “Indian names” or just popular among Indians living in western countries. Hubby’s suggestions are frustrating me as he suggests names like Chandraprakash which to me are way too long and unnecessarily complicated - and don’t work with our daughter’s name (Alisha). I also want to make sure we pick a name that sounds good on an adult, not just a baby/toddler.
I’ve looked through numerous lists but still am having trouble finding a name I love and it’s stressing me out! I find Indian/Hindu girls names soooo much easier and already had several I really liked, the boys names are tricky. My name choices tend to be a bit more traditional and ‘safe’, which doesnt help matters (if picking a western name for him I’d probably pick a name like Oliver, James or Ethan).
I like Kian/Kiaan, [name_u]Rayan[/name_u], [name_m]Kabir[/name_m] and [name_m]Ivaan[/name_m] from your list. I agree Chandraprakash is a bit too much for someone living in Australia, and it also is stylistically unmatched with your daughter’s name.
I think people use [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_u]Noah[/name_u] or [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] because they are similar to other names common in [name_f]India[/name_f] but also work fine in the [name_u]West[/name_u]. Saying that, I suppose you could use [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] out of these three.
Here are some other suggestions:

Thanks for the additional suggestions At this stage I think [name_m]Ivaan[/name_m] is my preferred name but hubby doesn’t seem as keen. [name_u]Will[/name_u] have a look through your list and suggest some of those to him.
You’ve gotten some great suggestions already - I’m just going to add the name of someone I know: [name_m]Vijay[/name_m]. It certainly works well in the UK and has a great meaning, I think!
[name_m]Ivaan[/name_m] is wonderful too - I can see why it’s your top contender. Balancing multiple languages and cultures can be so tricky but so rewarding in the end. Good luck with finding the perfect name!
