Indiana or Indie

Hello everyone,

Lately my husband and I have been thinking about the name [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] for a girl. He’s skeptical but I really love it. However, we both agree that we love [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nickname.

My question is twofold:

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is a nice name for a girl (not too ridiculous/make you think of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m]) and, if not, do you think [name_f]Indie[/name_f] would work as a full name?

Thank you!!

[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is not my style, I think it would be like naming your child [name_f]Florida[/name_f]…I can see the appeal, and people do use place names ([name_f]Virginia[/name_f], [name_u]Dakota[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_u]Paris[/name_u]), I just don’t think [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is ‘established’ enough to be viable as a name. (The only time [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is used, is for [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] a you said yourself.)
[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I don’t care for place names, I think [name_f]India[/name_f] would be better received.
An alternative I’d like to offer is [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], which would still give you the option of ‘[name_f]Indie[/name_f]’ as a nn.
Again, this is just my opinion, there are plenty of people that love place names!
Is the state of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] significant to you for a particular reason?

Where I am in Australia [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is a very popular girls name. No one associates it with [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] jones at all. So I wouldn’t worry about that!

My husband and I both liked [name_f]Indi[/name_f] too. I think it’s totally acceptable to have [name_f]Indi[/name_f] as a stand alone name. He wanted to have a longer name ([name_u]Indiana[/name_u]) with [name_f]Indi[/name_f] as a nickname for when she’s is an adult and a professional etc. which makes sense too. We decided on a different name but would have gone with [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] with [name_f]Indi[/name_f] as a nn.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps.

I think [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is quite pretty and I love [name_f]Indie[/name_f]. If you still have your doubts what about [name_f]India[/name_f] or Indyah?

I disagree that it can be a legitimate name. I do understand the association with it being a state in the US, but so are tons of others and they get along just fine. [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] is a personal favourite of mine and I am actually going there next year with my SO. [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] in Australia is pretty popular and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Evans[/name_m] is a gorgeous Australian actress. That’s who I think of when I think of the name.

So, I’ve never heard [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] as a full name, but it’s quite pretty! However, I have to say that I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Indie[/name_f], and definitely think it could work on its own. It’s so gorgeous!

I prefer [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as the full name. Not a fan of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u].

I would personally use something like [name_f]Indira[/name_f], nn [name_f]Indie[/name_f].

I like [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]!

[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is not my style, but I love [name_f]Indie[/name_f]. I think it definitely works as a full name! It’s beautiful. Other names you might consider to get the nn if you’d prefer:

[name_u]Indigo[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Cindy[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]

If it were me, I think I would just go with [name_f]Indie[/name_f]! xx

I am not a huge fan of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], personally. We are from Northern Kentucky/Southern Ohio and we are very close to the state of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] and it’s just a little too close to home for us. That being said, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Indie[/name_f]/[name_f]Indi[/name_f] as a nickname. We are actually considering [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] as a name for our next baby (due in [name_u]March[/name_u]) if it is a girl. Part of that is because I love the nickname of [name_f]Indie[/name_f] so much! Good luck!

I really love the nickname [name_f]Indie[/name_f] and would see no problem with someone using it as the actual first name. I live in [name_u]America[/name_u] and we have a state called [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], but I don’t see it as a deal breaker as others do. [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is pretty. I do like [name_f]Indira[/name_f] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u]. As for the [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] association, I don’t think that automatically, but what a great association in my opinion

I don’t think of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] at all! I think of little [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] Feek! [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] Feek is the daughter of [name_m]Christian[/name_m] singers [name_u]Joey[/name_u] + [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. She is such an amazing little girl!

I’m a big fan of commonly known ‘nicknames’ as stand alone names. I believe there are many names that can fall into this category and easily work as a stand alone name rather than a shortened version of a ore formal name and [name_f]Indie[/name_f] is one of them. It’s lovely on its own.

If it helps you any, my cousin named her Daughter [name_f]Indie[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] (not [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], just [name_f]Indie[/name_f]) and nobody bats an eyelid at it! I say go for it if you love it.

Considering the origins of the state’s name, I find it distasteful as a given name. I’m an American living in Australia and its popularity and appeal is really disturbing to me. However, I think [name_f]Indie[/name_f] could work on its own and it doesn’t have the baggage that [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] does.

I really like [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] and definitely think it’s a usable name. [name_f]Indie[/name_f] is cute, but does feel a little bit nick name-y to me, so personally I would go with [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] nn [name_f]Indie[/name_f], but I think it’s a great choice either way.

I prefer [name_f]Indie[/name_f], but [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] can definitely work!

Thanks to everyone for your comments!!!

From the sound of it, the opinion is split between people liking [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] as a full-name and people disliking it. It was interesting to hear from so many Australians, though. I didn’t know the name was popular there. We’re from [name_f]Canada[/name_f] so the name’s relation to the US State doesn’t matter much to us. From the sounds of it, though, most people are okay with [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a full name or a nickname, which is great.

You’ve given us something to think about. Thanks everyone!

I cant shake the association of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] out of mind, so sadly I cant see it as a name. [name_f]Indie[/name_f] on the other hand is seriously adorable! Maybe [name_f]India[/name_f] or [name_u]Indigo[/name_u]?

We named our daughter [name_u]Indiana[/name_u],

I absolutely love it, most of the time called [name_u]Indie[/name_u].

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is the biggest [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] fan, so that’s also been big factor.

Go for it, we love it
