I quite like the name [name_f]Indira[/name_f] (pronounced In-deer-a) nn [name_f]Indy[/name_f].
I’ve read some really negative feedback about this name, which makes me hesitant.
Any opinions?
I’ve been trying to find a girls name and what style I like sways all the time! I would really like something like this, with a spunky yet, interesting nn (or shortened version of the name) with a full name that makes you say wow, that was unexpected, something she can grow with the ages?
I think [name_f]Indira[/name_f] fits the description of the name you want pretty well! It’s interesting and unique, and it has a cute nickname with attitude.
Thank you. I’ve tried to think of other options but I come up empty. Some ppl have said it’s a cultural thing but these days, everyone everywhere uses all kinds of names from different cultures. And [name_f]Indy[/name_f] was too popular. But I like it. I don’t think it would be an issue
[name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Indira[/name_f]. It used to be on my list … I’ll have to put it back on because nn [name_f]Indy[/name_f] is perfect. I never thought of that - i loved [name_f]Indy[/name_f], but couldn’t get on board with [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], so [name_f]Indira[/name_f] is perf
[name_f]Frances[/name_f], called [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], would fit the bill, in my opinion. I think it’s due for a comeback.
Some other ideas:
[name_f]Althea[/name_f] ([name_f]Thea[/name_f])
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ([name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f])
[name_f]Brigitta[/name_f] (pronounced bree-gee-tah, nicknamed [name_f]Britta[/name_f])
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] ([name_f]Cora[/name_f] or [name_f]Delia[/name_f])
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] ([name_f]Meg[/name_f] is a kind of spunky nickname, I think, historically it’s a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], not [name_f]Megan[/name_f], and [name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f] is more unexpected than [name_f]Margaret[/name_f])
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] ([name_f]Tessa[/name_f] or [name_f]Tess[/name_f])
Totally disagree.
I’ve known 2 Indiras, one [name_m]Black[/name_m] & one White. The name fit both of them perfectly. My own name has the same origin as [name_f]Indira[/name_f] & I am not [name_f]Indian[/name_f] either. If you are using it properly (correct spelling, pronunciation, gender) then there is nothing wrong with using a name from another culture.
[name_f]Indira[/name_f] is a lovely name! Definitely fits the description I agree with the suggestion of [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (or possibly [name_f]Francine[/name_f]) with the nickname of [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]… another suggestion may be [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]? Lots of nicknames which are pretty spunky: nella, nellie, penny
Thank you! I’m glad to hear more positive things about [name_f]Indira[/name_f]. I did some reading on it and besides [name_f]Indira[/name_f] Ghandi, it was a Hindu mythological goddess? I don’t see how that would be so culturally appropriated…there are many ppl with Greek mythological gods and goddesses names. Correct me if I’m wrong.
It’s also a little farfetched to say its not my name to use, if that were the case, we would all be nameless.
I have considered [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] but the rising in popularity puts me off. [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] is cute but I cannot imagine using [name_f]Frances[/name_f], I don’t think it’s out style.
Just because you’ve known two non-Indians with the name doesn’t make it not culturally appropriative.
White people were the oppressors in India for centuries, using an Indian name without the heritage to back it up invalidates their culture, reinforces stereotypes, commodifies their culture, exoticizes an entire people, and distorts millenia of sacred tradition. If you’re comfortable naming your child something that does all of that, then fine. But just know you’re contributing to all of that when you do it.
Using European names (like the names of Greek mythological figures) is assimilating, not appropriating. Even if you’re not Greek, the names are ubiquitous in the culture to which you belong.
I love [name_f]Indira[/name_f]! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know much about the background of the name, so I won’t comment on the usability of it, but I have known an [name_f]Indira[/name_f] who was a little white british girl and nobody had anything back to say about it! [name_m]Even[/name_m] the indian family who saw her everyday at school. But I know that doesn’t mean much.
Besides, I think [name_f]Indira[/name_f] is beautiful and [name_f]Indie[/name_f]/[name_f]Indy[/name_f] is an adorable nickname. What about [name_f]Indra[/name_f]? Again, I don’t know the background on that name either so it might also be an issue.
The above is not only racist, but also hilarious! It’s like saying that I am not permitted to be named [name_f]Francine[/name_f] because I’m not [name_m]French[/name_m]! :-o
[name_f]Indira[/name_f] is such a pretty name! I also love the nn Dira Deera along with [name_f]Indy[/name_f]
I’m going to close this before it gets any more argumentative. We’ve discussed cultural appropriation many times on these forums already and I don’t see any need for further discussion.
