Initial Issues

I have always loved the names [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] for a boy and [name_f]Elora[/name_f] for a girl–really most names that start with E. Unfortunately, my last name starts with a W, meaning the baby’s initials would be EW. Granted, we’d have a middle name in there to space it out (like [name_f]Elora[/name_f] would be [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u], so EJW, which is a little more palatable). [name_f]My[/name_f] husband doesn’t think it’s a big deal because we could just include the middle initial, but I’m more hesitant about it. Am I being paranoid, or is he being unrealistic?

I don’t think it’s a huge issue. Most people rarely use their initials and when they do have to use them it’s usually just to sign things and it’s not really a big deal what they are. Of course kids may use it to tease them at some point, but kids will find something to tease other kids no matter what. So if it wasn’t the initials it would be something else and you typically can’t fully eliminate that.

I think they will be fine

EB White is the author who wrote Charlottes [name_m]Web[/name_m]. I feel he (and maybe other examples not in my mind) made those initials completely usable for others.

I am an EW! [name_u]An[/name_u] EEKW, to be precise (which I feel is definitely more embarrassing than EJW). It’s honestly never been an issue at all. [name_u]Eliot[/name_u] and [name_f]Elora[/name_f] are both lovely names, go for it!

No one ever uses their initials to the point that if it spells something out it would be problematic. my initials are BAR and it has no effect on me, no discount at the bar no teasing just initials

I don’t think it’s a big issue because you’ll have a middle name in there. As long as the middle name name doesn’t also start with W making it EWW then I think it’s fine!

I’ve met multiple people named Elizabeth Warren and never thought of those being their initials! Didn’t even notice. I don’t think most people will notice or care what someone’s initials are.

I am actually an EJW! I think it’s funny that my initials are ‘ew’ :joy: I’ve never had any issues with it and actually I was the one that figured out my initials spelt ‘ew.’ No one has ever pointed it out before and even if they’ve noticed it I’ve certainly never been teased about it. Also, because you’ve got [name_u]Jean[/name_u] in the middle, it’s gunna balance it out anyway so even if you were to use her initials for anything, they still wouldn’t directly spell EW! If you were to leave out the J, I think most people automatically read initials as the letters. So for example, I would read it as ‘Ee-double you’ as opposed to ‘EW’!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps :two_hearts:

i know several EW’s and i’d never even made that connotation until now that you’ve mentioned it

i myself am an ED (emergency department, eating disorder… etc.) and i never even realised until i was surrounded by those kind of acronyms. i did see a comment on here once saying that “ED” were unfortunate initials because of eating disorder but i don’t think most people would even think of that, and i love my actual name(s) - and the names are far more important than the initials!

hope this gives you a little reassurance

I don’t see an issue

I don’t think it’s a big issue. There’ll be a middle name to break it up and I probably wouldn’t overanalyse if i saw the intials EW
