[name]Robert[/name] is a family name I don’t entirely love, but I do like that it is classic and I adore the nickname [name]Rob[/name].
Last name starts with B and I thought the combo [name]Robert[/name] [name]Oliver[/name] B was very handsome, then realized [name]ROB[/name] would a) spell his nickname and b) spell a negative word. A is cool, less sure about B.
I actually think it’s kind of cool, lol. [name]Jack[/name] [name]August[/name] [name]Cole[/name] is my second favorite boys’ name… his FN is [name]Jack[/name], and his initials would be [name]JAC[/name]… I kind of like it, haha. But as for the [name]Rob[/name]-verb thing, it might be a bit negative (and I would hope it wasn’t a self-fulfilling prophecy!), but since his FN would be [name]Robert[/name] and the nn [name]Rob[/name], I don’t really think of the criminal act, more just that his nn is [name]Rob[/name] and so are his initials… besides, how often will he be known by all of his initials? It’s usually just the first and last initial, right?
Thanks for the feedback! It may well go on the list, as I do like the flow of the name and do think it’s clever to have the initials in the nickname (well done with [name]JAC[/name], too : D!). And you are right, too, it’s so often just first and last. My own initials also spell a potentially mildly negative word (JAB - not as bad a verb as [name]ROB[/name], but also less of a nickname) and I’ve never minded / it hasn’t been any self-fulfilling prophecy, so I should probably take the cue to just chill.
I don’t know if you want to go with something less classic, but I met a guy named [name]Robinson[/name] today (like [name]Robinson[/name] Crusoe!), so I think something like that, or even just [name]Robin[/name], nn [name]Rob[/name]/[name]Robbie[/name], would be really usable. It doesn’t sound like it really bothers you anymore, haha, but if you don’t like the whole [name]ROB[/name] initials you could always change the MN. I’m sure there are other awesome names that work between [name]Robert[/name] and your ln!
[name]Robinson[/name] would be pretty awesome, thanks ashthedreamer! Maybe TOO awesome for my ultimate taste : D, but I will have to think on it. You are right, I could go with another middle, I just think [name]Robert[/name] [name]Oliver[/name] sounds so nice and I do think spelling the nickname is really cool, if I can get over the verb (which I think I can). Anyway, this is all still 1-2 years off anyway most likely, but trying to have the plan in place. Not sure what I like as much with [name]Robert[/name], honestly, but lots of time to think! [name]Robert[/name] [name]Xavier[/name], maybe…
Hmm. [name]Robert[/name] [name]Xavier[/name] is kind of cool! I think [name]Xavier[/name] spices up the classic [name]Robert[/name]. [name]How[/name] do you say [name]Xavier[/name]? like ZAY-vyer or EX-zay-vyer?
I’ve always been partial to [name]Robert[/name] [name]Josiah[/name] (maybe [name]Robert[/name] [name]Jonas[/name]?) and [name]Robert[/name] [name]Landon[/name] myself. I think [name]Landon[/name] might be a little trendy/mainstream for your taste, though. I think something literary would be nice with [name]Robert[/name]–[name]Robert[/name] [name]Radley[/name] (kinda “R” heavy, haha, but I like the association to “To Kill a Mockingbird”… [name]Robert[/name] [name]Harper[/name] could be cool, too, if you’re into [name]Harper[/name] on a boy at all), [name]Robert[/name] [name]Henry[/name] ([name]Henry[/name] Wadsworth [name]Longfellow[/name]), [name]Robert[/name] [name]Fitzwilliam[/name] (Mr. [name]Darcy[/name]!), [name]Robert[/name] [name]Holden[/name] (Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name]… maybe not the best association, haha), [name]Robert[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] (A Tale of Two Cities), etc.? I had so much fun coming up with a literary MN for [name]Henry[/name], haha. I don’t know if you’re really into literature, so I don’t know if you’d really like the connection, but I think it’s cool.
My [name]Xavier[/name] is kind of in between : D. Closer to ZAY-vee-er/Zay-vyer. But really almost like Gzay-vee-er/Gzay-vyer. Tricky I know : D. I would NOT be bothered by either of the other pronunciations (especially as a middle name). Also - all of these week ‘i’'s are sort of both syllabic and not for me, so I never know how to spell it. Like, the name [name]Xavier[/name], since I don’t start with Ex, is between 2 and 3 syllables for me. [name]Julia[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name], etc, all the same.
[name]Robert[/name] [name]Josiah[/name] is nice! Ooh and I do love [name]Jonas[/name] and everyone gets so “[name]Jonas[/name] Brothers” about it : D. RJ would be good initials. I have admiration for several historical figures named [name]Jonas[/name]. But, I always get weird about 2-2 rhythms for no rational reason : D. So [name]Josiah[/name] is nicer for me. [name]Landon[/name] is handsome but yes, I tend to like older names. I do like the literary suggestions - I do like literature and have literary connections to most of the names I like - although they tend to be unintentional bonuses, rather than something I’ve sought out per se. Like: the [name]Evelyn[/name] Waugh novel [name]Helena[/name], [name]Louisa[/name] [name]May[/name] [name]Alcott[/name], [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s [name]Imogen[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Sylvie[/name] Plath (dark, I know, but still there), the bible-as-literature for the Hebrew names I like. [name]Even[/name] little [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Robin[/name] for [name]Christopher[/name] and [name]Robert[/name] to a lesser extent. And there are others.
The ones you suggested are handsome, [name]Robert[/name] [name]Radley[/name] would be my favorite, I don’t mind the R R, but again, 2-2 is a weird aversion (but a mild one to be fair).
Something about the Wadsworth suggestion made me think of [name]Thoreau[/name] ([name]Henry[/name] [name]David[/name]?), and [name]Robert[/name] [name]Thoreau[/name] would be really nice. It’s 2-2, but the stress being on the second part of [name]Thoreau[/name] breaks it up for me more. And [name]Thoreau[/name] makes me think of [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Waldo[/name] [name]Emerson[/name] and I could really like [name]Robert[/name] [name]Emerson[/name]. [name]Emerson[/name] is too “girly” sadly for me for a boy in first (just because of use, like [name]Harper[/name], not because of the name itself), but in the middle it’d be fine.
I think it’s super awesome when that happens.
My cousin’s daughters name is [name]Zoe[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]. And I know a girl whose full name spells out her first name. [name]May[/name] [name]Ali[/name] Y----
I love it on girls. I think it’s great in your case as well.
I never even noticed/remembered that [name]Rob[/name] was a negative word, in this type of placement you just think of the name.
