Initials that spell a word?????

Hello!

This is my first post - hopefully I do it right.

I am seeking feedback on initials that (unintentionally) spell a word.

A little bit of background:

My husband and I are expecting our first child. We are taking the surprise route with gender - providing I hold out!! Because of this, I am hoping we have ‘selected’ names for both a boy and a girl prior to the birth.

If the baby is a girl, my husband suggested we name her for both of our maternal grandmothers who mean the world to each of us and were/are so influential. I absolutely love this idea! But, would like for our daughter to still have her ‘own name,’ so to speak. So, we have decided to give her two honour middle names. Our last name, which begins with the letter ‘S,’ is one syllable, which prevents a first name and two middle names from being over the top.

The two middle names will be [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. My husband is adamant that [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] be the first of the two…for my grandmother whom my family and I nursed during her final years.

So, if we have a daughter, she will be called _______ [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] S_____, and this is where we have a potential problem.

The dilemma:

Our favourite options for a first name all begin with the letter ‘S’ — [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]/[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f].

This would make her initials SEAS. Is this a problem?

Obviously we encounter a similar problem with other first names that begin with certain letters like ‘P,’ but should we find a first name that will not mean her initials spell a word?

As long as it’s not a bad word, I don’t see what the problem is. SEAS isn’t offensive or rude or anything so I see no issue with it.

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] for example is lovely.

I think SEAS is fine. As long as it doesn’t spell anything crude, gross or offensive I think it’s ok! I’ve only just realized this myself (which is why I clicked on this forum) we have hazel in our top 3, but our last name begins with an O. HO. I’m not sure how that one slid past me for so long.

I agree, as long as it doesn’t spell anything unfortunate, I think it is fine. My favourite is also [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f].

I agree with everyone else! I think SEAS is just fine (consequently, also PEAS! I was swooning over the idea of a little [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] until I read that the first letter would be “S”…). I agree with everyone else that [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] is my favorite–so gorgeous!–but I also like [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (although even [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] is a bit on the long side–and also a little bit “[name_f]Anne[/name_f]” heavy).

Good luck!

I actually think its cool that her initials would spell a word. At least it is a good word. I didn’t suggest any A names to my husband because I didn’t want our daughter to have the initials [name_m]AXE[/name_m].
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] is my favorite of your S names.

I think that SEAS is a cute set of initials. I like [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], and [name_f]Susana[/name_f]. Go for it
And welcome to Nameberry

Thank you for the feedback thus far. Although SEAS is not offensive, I have been concerned it might be plain silly or tease worthy for her to have initials that spell a word. But, no one seems to think it would be a problem, which is encouraging.

Obviously parents cannot name their daughter with any insight into her future - whether she will get married or not; if she does, whether she will change her last name or not; if she does, what her new initials will be. But, I am now worried that SEAS could become [name_m]SEAL[/name_m] or SEAR or SEAT or [name_m]SEAN[/name_m] or SEAM! I am not sure if I am worrying too much (I never realised how massive a responsibility it is to give someone a name…that they are stuck with).

My two favourites are [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]. My husband most likes [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. We had not thought of the double whammy with [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Anne[/name_f] - thank you to the poster who pointed this out. We may cross [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] off the list.

SEAS is fine. So long as initials don’t spell anything bad, it should not be a cause for concern. I like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. Also, I would leave it to my daughter to handle the consequences of changing her surname to her husband’s if my daughter would make that decision.

I wouldn’t worry about the future of their name. I know someone who was named [name_u]Shelly[/name_u] and she married a [name_m]Shelton[/name_m]. I also know a [name_f]Candie[/name_f] who married an [name_f]Apple[/name_f]. You don’t know who they will marry and you can’t control that, all you can do is give them a loving name that has meaning and something they will be proud of. Also I vote for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] too!!

I don’t see the initials spelling “SEAS” as a problem at all.
It could actually be fun, as it is special.

Play with it, what if you did a sea themed baby shower, or nursery?
For example, my last name is pronounced, and very similarly spelled, to the Baleen whale.
Definitely going to use that to my advantage and have some fun!

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if that’s a little “out there” for you, but I would take that as a fun opportunity.

I may add, I love your traditional naming style. It’s beautiful when done correctly, and I certainly think you’ve accomplished that.

If it makes you feel better, my daughter has initials that spell BAG. Haha!

Honestly, I think it’s fine! There is nothing wrong with SEAS, so I would not let it deter you from your favorite first names. If anyone ever comments, it will probably only be around her birth…but the reason behind the middle names are beautiful and this will probably be what people talk about (more that her name spelling seas).

Sorry, I had to reply to this with a big LOL!!!

My kiddos initials are KOP. Honestly, I don’t think many people will notice and even if you monogram things, the last initial falls in the middle so the word won’t be spelled out anyway.

bellaczh and nadjajay, I think I need to relax a little in selecting a name for a our little one!

simplysarahbeth, that might be a little “out there” for us! Neither my husband or I like the water. But, if this baby is a girl, perhaps she will.

ashleyg and gipro2003, I guess SEAS is fine!

inaname, thank you.

I think I’d actually be a little more inclined to try to spell a word than not! I don’t know why having initials spell a word would be a problem, unless it was an offensive word (and even then, if I really liked the name, it would need to be really quite offensive for me to decide against using it). I don’t think initials are a very big deal either way.

I wish my initials spelled something cool. ARR is emphatically not.

SEAS it is then! Now we just need to decide on a first name.

I really appreciate all of the feedback.
