Innes- too teaseable?

I’ve liked the name [name]Innes[/name] for years and always imagined having a boy with that name. But now that I’m expecting again, I keep coming back to the facts that-
1: many people only recognize it as [name]Ennis[/name] from Brokeback Mountain
2: it’s so easy to shorten to “inny!”
3: it looks and sounds like the Spanish girl’s name [name]Ines[/name], and we travel to Spain pretty often.
What do you think, should I give up on an old favorite?

I really like [name]Innes[/name] also. I did think of [name]Ennis[/name] from Brokeback Mountain though and I can think of several jokes for it. I still like it bt it would probably be best as a middle name.

I didn’t make the Brokeback Mountain connection until I read it on your post. But I did think that you were referring to [name]Ines[/name], to me it’s pretty feminine sounding :frowning: Sorry.

I also thought you were refering to [name]Ines[/name], sorry, I’ve never heard of [name]Innes[/name] before so I’m unfamiliar with it

Aw, I like [name]Innes[/name]. I think the [name]Innis[/name] spelling is a little less feminine, though, if avoiding a “girly” vibe is your primary concern. I’d also consider the variant Inman, especially if you’re a [name]Charles[/name]’ [name]Frazier[/name] (“Cold Mountain”) fan.

I also thought you were referring to the feminine [name]Ines[/name]-- and since you travel to Spain often that might become an issue.
Then again, if you love it, use it!
Good luck!

I like it, but the similarity to [name]Ines[/name] might be a problem.

Have you considered [name]Ellis[/name]?

This is exactly what I was going to say. I assumed when I saw the title of the post that you were naming a little girl.

I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Innes[/name]. But I would say that because it is my son’s name. I am Scottish (that’s why I called him [name]Innes[/name]). He is almost 19 and loves his unique name. I hope you choose it.

I have a 6 year old names [name]Innes[/name] (my mother’s maiden name) and kids his age would not make the connection to Brokeback Mountain (I’d be a bit worried if kids are watching that movie for entertainment!). My [name]Innes[/name] is always called [name]Innes[/name] except by family who might call him Inny and I also call him Inky (ironic nickname as he is very blonde). He loves his name and doesn’t mind the fact that girls can be called [name]Innes[/name] as well. Frankly [name]Innes[/name] sounds normal in his class where there is a [name]Caezar[/name], [name]Blade[/name], [name]River[/name] and [name]Ocean[/name].

I also think that there is a town in [name]Ireland[/name] called [name]Ennis[/name]?

When I fist read your post, my brain saw [name]Ines[/name], which I know to be a girl’s name. I can’t say I have heard of [name]Innes[/name], but if you love it… Go for it!

Totally usable. I don’t think anyone would think of Brokeback Mountain, but even if so, I don’t see a problem there. I mean [name]Ennis[/name] wasn’t a bad character. Doesn’t sound feminine to me either, rather neutral.

I saw the movie but barely remember it (I was so bored) and I don’t remeber any names

I also thought you meant [name]Ines[/name]/[name]Inez[/name]

I’ve only seen the name spelled [name]Ennis[/name], and it’s usable

My two year old is called [name]Innes[/name]. Its ‘relatively’ unusual in [name]Scotland[/name] - known more as a surname or an old fashioned name. Have heard of a few girls [name]Innes[/name]’ lately but tends to be spelled differently and pronounced [name]Inez[/name]. Nobody calls him Inny and seriously everyone who hears the name loves it. My sister sometimes calls him [name]Nessie[/name] which I think is cute.
