Insight on names for Ezra's brother/sister?

We are excited to be expecting baby #2 come [name]September[/name]. The gender will remain unknown until birth. We prefer to have a list of 4 or 5 boy names and 4 or 5 girls names to choose from. We care deeply about a name’s meaning and also it’s symbolism within the culture of origin. We try to research, contemplate and consider a name thoroughly but some things might escape us. This is where I need your help. I will list our top names below (with our expected pronunciation). Please comment with concerns on pronunciation, possible negative connotations, or other thoughts. Also, positive feedback is much appreciated too (my preggie hormones could use a few friendly words). Thanks so much for your help. (Big brother is named “[name]Ezra[/name]”)

[name]Ari[/name], [name]Milo[/name] & [name]Noam[/name] are awesome little guy names, especially with big brother [name]Ezra[/name]! [name]Tavi[/name] reminds me of a young fashion blogger/muse [name]Tavi[/name] Gevinson - though most wouldn’t associate that name with her. I am all for unisex names, but just wanted to point out that this name is also used on girls, as i know many people strongly dislike unisex names! Actually, same would go for [name]Sage[/name], as I have heard of [name]Sage[/name] used on girls and boys equally.

You can’t go wrong with any of those girls names! Can i suggest the name [name]Nova[/name] to you guys? [name]One[/name] of my favorites, and [name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Nova[/name] are a perfect match. [name]Love[/name] her meaning as well! Latin origin, means “New” and in astronomy “a nova is a star that releases a tremendous burst of energy, becoming temporarily extraordinarily bright”. Cool!

I love the name [name]Ezra[/name]! & your lists are gorgeous.

[name]Nava[/name]: Reminds me of Navaho. Not really my style but a pretty name nonetheless.
[name]Olive[/name]: I much much much prefer [name]Olivia[/name]. [name]Olive[/name] is a noun but [name]Olivia[/name] is a gorgeous name.
[name]Mabel[/name]: It’s very old-lady sounding. I prefer is spelled [name]Mable[/name] but again, I’m not a fan of the name.
[name]Pearl[/name]: I like it, holds potential.
[name]Opal[/name]: I also like this.

[name]Tavi[/name]: Interesting. Quite unique, I like it.
[name]Ari[/name]: I like this a lot but seems very nicknamey to me. Maybe find a longer name to use & then have [name]Ari[/name] as the NN such as [name]Arnold[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Aaron[/name].
[name]Noam[/name]: [name]Love[/name] this! my favorite by far
[name]Milo[/name]: Also one of my favorites
[name]Sage[/name]: I like this a lot surprisingly.

Best of luck!

I really like the name [name]Ari[/name]. It sounds handsome and fresh and has a cool meaning. I think it sounds great with [name]Ezra[/name]!

I have a thing for the name [name]Olive[/name], I just think it’s precious. [name]Mabel[/name]'s been growing on me lately too, and it has a sweet meaning.

My favorites from your lists are [name]Opal[/name] (adore this!!), [name]Mabel[/name], [name]Ari[/name] and [name]Sage[/name]. Any of those would be wonderful siblings for [name]Ezra[/name].

Other suggestions you may like:

[name]Viv[/name],

First, I love your sibset! I have read about the association with [name]Tavi[/name] and the fashion blogger - funny I had never heard of her before that. I will look her up but think it has little relevance as we keep most media out of our family life. However, I think it is good to know and consider as others might make strong associations. I actually try to stay away from unisex names but being that [name]Tavi[/name] seems to originate as a masculine name I am willing to make an exception (I think I am smitten with it). I love [name]Sage[/name] for a boy, like you I have heard it for girls too. My concern with [name]Sage[/name] is that it might sound out of place next to [name]Ezra[/name]. However, it’s “wise man” implications kinda brings it back around for me; as [name]Ezra[/name] is often seen as an old wise man name too.

[name]Nova[/name] is beautiful but I have known quite a few and not always with positive associations. I will contemplate on that for awhile…

Warmly, [name]Marissa[/name]

[name]Jill[/name],

Thanks for your input. Congrats on your growing family; how exciting to go from 4 kiddos to 6!

Leslieanne, thanks for your description of how [name]Ari[/name] sounds to you.

Esrever88, I will take a look at your suggestions, thanks; they are beautiful in writing!

[name]Ezra[/name] is an awesome name! Great taste!

I love [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name], & [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]. So cute together!!!

[name]Alexia[/name] [name]Mae[/name], thanks. My cousin has great taste, like you… she brought a baby [name]Gideon[/name] into our family just a few months ago! I will check out your website.

Are you looking for a name of Hebrew origin? I’m just wondering because [name]Ezra[/name] is Hebrew, and so are many of the boy’s names in the list, but not the girl’s names.

I like [name]Nava[/name] best of the ones from your list -however, since [name]Nova[/name] is becoming more popular, it might be confused with that name -your daughter might have to spell &/or explain her name frequently, even though it is simple. (I say this mostly because a pp commented on the name [name]Nova[/name], even though it wasn’t on your list at all).

I think [name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Nava[/name] go nicely together.
Other Hebrew girl names I like:
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Abigail[/name] (I think these two are so pretty together, but [name]Abigail[/name] is very popular)
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Atarah[/name] (very uncommon; means “crown”)
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Tamar[/name]/[name]Tamara[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Tirzah[/name]
My favorite from this list is [name]Tirzah[/name]. It means “delight”, is very uncommon yet easy to pronounce, spell etc. She would have a very pretty & unique name.

For boys names, I like [name]Noam[/name] & [name]Ari[/name] from your lists, mostly because of their meanings. They both go nicely with [name]Ezra[/name], too. I also like pp suggestions of [name]Gideon[/name] & [name]Asher[/name]. [name]Asher[/name] has a nice meaning, but [name]Gideon[/name] doesn’t so much, although the story of [name]Gideon[/name] in the Bible is a good association for the name.
all the best with your naming decisions!

[name]Jude[/name] and [name]Reuben[/name] would also be great fits. I’m so glad [name]Gideon[/name] is getting used!

WDYT of [name]Jude[/name]? I think it goes great with [name]Ezra[/name] and it seems familiar maybe Im remembering from a book or song?

I love [name]Ari[/name] ([name]Aryeh[/name] and [name]Ariel[/name]) and [name]Noam[/name], but these are very ethnic Jewish/Israeli names whereas [name]Ezra[/name] seems to be the new biggie among Protestants to replace [name]Zachary[/name] and [name]Joshua[/name]…I would see [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Noam[/name] or [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Ari[/name] and wonder if you go to my shul, so you might take that into consideration. What about [name]Jotham[/name], which is a Biblical name that’s rarely used but has a great sound, or [name]Adriel[/name], another Biblical name that might work with [name]Ezra[/name]? ([name]Adriel[/name] is making some inroads in the Hispanic community but I don’t know why.)

For girls, I don’t much care for most of your choices except [name]Mabel[/name], as a nn for [name]Amabel[/name]. And I think [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Amabel[/name] go really well together, they have that vintage sound.

What about [name]Araminta[/name]? [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Araminta[/name] also has that terrific vintage sound.

Lilysong, we do like names of Hebrew origin but are not committed to them as first names. Of your suggestions, I like [name]Tirzah[/name] but already know one. We try to choose names that are unique to us (meaning we don’t know anyone with the name). [name]Asher[/name] is nice but a bit too common for our taste and [name]Gideon[/name] was taken by our cousin just a few months ago.

Thetxbelle, I love the name [name]Jude[/name] (and [name]Judah[/name]) but both have been used numerous times within our immediate community of family and friends. I agree that [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Jude[/name] (or [name]Judah[/name]) sound very nice together.

MiloOwen, If you asked if I went to your shul I might assume you were offering to introduce me and take you up on it. I will look into [name]Jotham[/name]. [name]Adriel[/name] is nice but also the name of a dear friend’s child (as is [name]Shem[/name], which I love). As far as the girls names you mentioned, I think I am partial to two-syllable names. I always seem to try to shorten ones which are any longer… Thanks for sharing such beautiful suggestions, I really appreciate your time and thought.

Warmly, [name]Marissa[/name]

pepperingram, thanks for your thoughts. I love [name]Pearl[/name], too, as it is my birthstone and it is a gem of the sea (reflecting my name “[name]Marissa[/name]”). I have not thought of [name]Nava[/name] as “clunky” but thought it rather flowed off my tongue; so it is good to hear another perspective. I suppose some people might over accentuate the “a” in [name]Nava[/name] and [name]Tavi[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Noam[/name] will commonly be mistaken as [name]Noah[/name], or does it sound distinctive enough?

Warmly, [name]Marissa[/name]

Your boys’ names are all interesting, my favourite is [name]Milo[/name], but [name]Noam[/name] is great and [name]Ari[/name] is quite sweet too. The girls’ names are not to my taste at all, so I really can’t choose… maybe [name]Opal[/name]? [name]Ezra[/name] is a super name though and congratulations!

Congratulations on your little bundle!!

I love [name]Ezra[/name]. And what great lists! I have never heard of most of these, but they are great! When I first saw [name]Nava[/name], I thought “Eh, it seems like it should be Nay-va. I’m not sure I like that.” BUT as I read on in the posts, it quickly started to outshine the others (which are all beautiful). It grew on me very quickly. I do love the name [name]Mabel[/name], but it doesn’t seem to go with [name]Ezra[/name] – same with your other girl options. [name]Nava[/name] seems like the perfect sibling to [name]Ezra[/name]. I’m sure some people will mispronounce it, but you’ll get that with lots of names – even surprisingly common names – and once corrected, they won’t do it again.

As for the boys, I like all of them (except [name]Sage[/name] because it seems too feminine, especially next to [name]Ezra[/name]), but the best with [name]Ezra[/name] in my opinion is [name]Tavi[/name] (what a great name!). I also love [name]Noam[/name], but it doesn’t seem to go as well with [name]Ezra[/name].

P.S. Now that I’ve seen your explanation of [name]Pearl[/name], that’s also growing on me quite quickly … “[name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]” also has a nice ring to it and I love that [name]Pearl[/name] has such a great personal meaning for you. And I think [name]Noam[/name] is well-known enough that it wouldn’t be mistaken for [name]Noah[/name]. They seem very different to me.

If you love [name]Tavi[/name], I’d say go with him! I think its an uncommon enough name that being “unisex” won’t matter too much - you probably will ever only know one or two in your life so the associated sex will always be the sex of the person you know with the name. Am i making sense? Its a tad late and rough night in our house (sleep training the girls!).

[name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Tavi[/name] make such handsome brothers!

Other suggestion for you on the girls side would be [name]Aria[/name]. Similar to [name]Ari[/name] on your boys list, but feminine and a beautiful meaning as well. Only problem i see with [name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Aria[/name] as siblings is the association with the characters in my guilty pleasure tv show Pretty [name]Little[/name] Liars ([name]Ezra[/name] & [name]Aria[/name] are a couple on the show) - but once again, shouldn’t make too much of a difference for you if you choose to leave all media out of your house! Kudos for that - must be such a breath of fresh air!

xo [name]Viv[/name]

I just love the name [name]Ezra[/name], it’s currently top of my list if our bun in the oven is a boy. From your girls list, I love [name]Nava[/name] and [name]Olive[/name] the best (I’m a little biased because [name]Olive[/name] is top of our girl’s list, too!) I just love that [name]Olive[/name] symbolizes peace and has such a great feel to it. [name]Nava[/name] is absolutely beautiful and sounds great with [name]Ezra[/name]. I adore the names [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Opal[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name] but I don’t think they sound as nice with [name]Ezra[/name] as [name]Nava[/name] and [name]Olive[/name] do.

From your boys list, well, I have a little [name]Milo[/name] so that’s my favorite and [name]Noam[/name] is right behind [name]Ezra[/name] on our list so those two outshine the others to me. I’ve always loved [name]Ari[/name], seems like such a strong classic and I must admit that I don’t really care for [name]Sage[/name], especially on a boy. I wonder if you’ve considered Ze’ev or [name]Amos[/name]? Those are two others we are considering.

All your names are lovely, seems like you can’t go wrong!
