International names for our baby

Hello everyone,
I’m pregnant with my first baby and couldn’t be more overjoyed! Me and SO want to choose a name that is international and usable in more cultures. We are originally european (plus I’m half southwestern asian). Right now we live in a western english speaking country, so choosing names that are convenient in all ways can be very tough!

Our last name is european, starts with a B and has 5 letters. For girls, we like Esther, Luna and Evelyn. I’ve been thinking about honouring my mother named Sylvia but for some reason we can’t decide on a girl version of that name that we like. For boys we have been thinking Silas (honouring Sylvia), but it’s not really easy to pronounce in our home country! Other names that we really like are Benjamin and Lucas.

What are your thoughts on these names? Which are your favourites? Please feel free to leave some name suggestions that could work :heart_hands:

I like all of your options! For girls, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] seems like the one that would travel best in the most places, as the pronunciation is so clear from the spelling. [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] also feels very international for boys, though I must say I love [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u], it’s one of my top boys names too!

Congratulations! I agree with @EagleEyes that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] seem the most international of your current options. I think [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (or maybe Ester?) would work as well. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is a perfect way to honor Sylvia; it’s a shame it doesn’t work in your home country! Would [name_m]Silvio[/name_m] or Silvan/Sylvan work better?

[name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are all lovely. Thank you everyone for your lovely suggestions! I have created a list of baby names that we are considering. Pretend that [name_u]Sylvester[/name_u] and [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] are there too, I’ll add them later since I’m on Android right now.
[name_m]Link[/name_m] for my baby names list:

Some of them are common, some are not. [name_f]Honour[/name_f] names are all versions of [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_u]Andrea[/name_u] and [name_f]Viera[/name_f]. Others are simply names that we’re considering. I’ll be very glad if you tell me your personal favourites! Are some of the names “too out of there” or “unusuable”? Which pronounciations are easy worldwide? Which names seem more like middle names? Thank you all again!! :dizzy:

BTW: I love the name [name_f]Nora[/name_f], but it means “burrow, lair” in my first language, which isn’t immediately a bad thing, but it would confuse many people in our home country, unfortunately.

Seeing how excited you are about your first baby has made me smile I wish you all the best with your new addition :white_heart:

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] feels very international honestly the ultimate universal choice. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is beautiful celestial choice. Some other names with that fashionable lilting L start which feel international are [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Liliosa[/name_f], [name_f]Leila[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_f]Leonora[/name_f], [name_f]Leona[/name_f] and [name_f]Leonie[/name_f].

I also love [name_f]Esther[/name_f]! She’s a lovely biblical choice really strong, classic and timeless. I also love the meaning ‘star’ she’s just gorgeous. Some other choices could be [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f].

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is very classic she’s elegant, sweet and timeless. Names that could also work are [name_f]Evelina[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is lovely! I really like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] but also [name_u]Silver[/name_u] is a great idea to honour a [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. In relation to boys [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] could work. I think [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] could be a good idea. I also love [name_m]Silas[/name_m] have you thought of [name_u]Forest[/name_u]? [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] means ‘from the forest’ so could [name_u]Forest[/name_u] be an idea! I love the idea of [name_u]Forest[/name_u].

[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] is such a lovely name! A really strong biblical name that feels handsome, wholesome and has sweet nicknames. I love [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] [name_u]Silver[/name_u] would be gorgeous. You may also like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u].

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] is a nice name he has a relaxed laid back friendly vibe. However I do prefer [name_u]Luca[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Luca[/name_u] is gorgeous. Some other ideas could be [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u] and Otis/Otto.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps :tulip:

Congratulations!! I love your list! So many good options…

Favorites from your list:

[name_u]Andrea[/name_u]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

I’ve known people named [name_u]Andrea[/name_u] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] from several different countries and cultures around the world, so those seem truly international to me! [name_u]Love[/name_u] them both. And [name_f]Vera[/name_f] is so sleek and simple, and would probably be easy to spell and pronounce in many places.

[name_m]Nicolas[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Elio[/name_m]
[name_m]Stefan[/name_m]
[name_u]Sylvester[/name_u] (I prefer this to Sylvan!)

[name_u]Love[/name_u] all of these! I think you can’t go wrong!

Names I like less on the list – [name_f]Ester[/name_f] and [name_f]Estera[/name_f] seem like less expected spellings of [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and might be overly complicated, and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] feels a bit overused, at least in the U.S. But nothing on your list feels really “too out there” to use!

Thank you everyone! I appreciate these lovely replies so much… what a wonderful read. I want to announce that after I’ve uploaded this topic, we have found out that we’re expecting twins. :dizzy: Double name trouble! Later I will probably upload another topic about names, now for two babies!
