Irie

What do you think of the girl’s name [name]Irie[/name] (prn eye-ree). Has a nice meaning - powerful and positive.
Is it too ‘out there’?

I think it could be the new [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name]. It’s gorgeous, and the meaning is a bonus.

It just reminds me of the rasta term which is translated as you say, but is often used as slang for smoking pot. Probably only old hippies would think of that though, but for me that is the only thing I think of off the bat.

Wow, i certainly never would have associated it with pot!

I would think of pot and rasta culture a la [name]Bob[/name] [name]Marley[/name]. That is the first thing I thought of. Takes me back to about 1989.

I don’t like it sorry, just an odd sound to it!

Cute as a nickname for [name]Iris[/name], but not as a standalone name.

I like it a lot! I have always though it would make a really cute NN for [name]Ireland[/name]

Hahaa I instantly thought of the [name]Bob[/name] [name]Marley[/name] / pot reference too and laughed at ‘powerful, positive meaning’…i’m in my 20’s, but I probably only know this cause my parents are old hippies! It has a pretty sound, but some people might figure you’re a pothead!

I think it sounds pretty but I completely agree with previous posters, there is an association with Rastafarian culture.

A pothead/rasta friend in high school named his cat [name]Irie[/name], that’s my only association. In my head, its followed by “yah mahn” as soon as I read it.

I love [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name], so I like [name]Irie[/name] as well based purely off of sound, but I do think that it’s a less established name than either [name]Iris[/name] or [name]Ivy[/name] and I think that if one uses it they should be aware of its connotations. That doesn’t mean it’s unusable, at least not in my opinion.

If you really like [name]Irie[/name], then I think that [name]Iris[/name] nicknamed [name]Irie[/name] is also a good way to get it.

I agree with this! [name]Iris[/name] is stunning and I like the idea of [name]Irie[/name] as a nn.

Have you ever read White Teeth by [name]Zadie[/name] [name]Smith[/name]? [name]One[/name] of the main characters is a girl called [name]Irie[/name], named for the Jamaican term, whose mother [name]Clara[/name] is Jamaican and father [name]Archie[/name] is English. Its a great book that I read in my early teens and as I result I loved the name [name]Irie[/name] for years, the perfect cross between [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name].

Yet for the same associations others have mentioned, I’ve gone off the idea of using it over the years. I think it would make a sweet middle name though.

I’ll have to tell my brother about this name if it has a reference to marijuana. He owns and operates a dispensary. He’d probably love it!

I agree…pretty but total pothead referance…not usable imho

I think it’s kind of cool! I couldn’t use it though, because I live near [name]Lake[/name] [name]Erie[/name].

I think it’s definitely usable. I’d use it anyway, though I’m more laid-back about this kind of stuff

Totally makes me think of [name]Bob[/name] [name]Marley[/name]. [name]Irie[/name], [name]Irie[/name] Mon!

I like it a lot!

It would make a great nn for [name]Eira[/name], [name]Iris[/name] or [name]Irene[/name], but I don’t see why it couldn’t stand alone.
