I adore the name [name]Iris[/name], but wonder if there are any nice sounding nick names or abbreviations that go with it? Does anyone know any Irises? What did they get called?
I am Australian so nick names are unavoidable, so you might as well pick a name that has a great shortened form!
My other children are:
[name]Digby[/name] [name]George[/name] (Digs, Diggers)
[name]Adelaide[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] ([name]Addie[/name])
I haven’t come up with a middle name for [name]Iris[/name] but that’s another problem altogether!
I love [name]Iris[/name] too! And I love your other children’s names!
I guess [name]Irie[/name] (eye-ree) would be the most obvious nickname for [name]Iris[/name]. Personally I think [name]Izzy[/name] could work well and would be my first choice.
When you come up with a middle name another nickname might appear with it!
I love the name [name]Iris[/name]. [name]One[/name] of my great-grandma’s friends was [name]Iris[/name]. She never had a nickname that I’m aware of. I agree with the above poster that [name]Irie[/name] would be the most intuitive. I would never have thought of [name]Izzy[/name] but I also think it would work.
Oh, I [name]LOVE[/name] the names of your other children. [name]Do[/name] you get lots of positive responses with [name]Digby[/name]'s name? I’ve tried to get my hubby on board with [name]Adelaide[/name] but he just can’t get past the city!!
[name]Iris[/name] is a beautiful name! Maybe one will come naturally when she is born? We called our son [name]Miles[/name] and his nn is [name]Milo[/name] - it just happened. We actually like the name [name]Milo[/name] - but Aussie too - so all we could think of was the cereal. LOL. But it actually works really well. So maybe something will naturally happen?
Having Australian relative I imagine [name]Irie[/name] (eye-ree) would be the natural nickname that people would pick up for [name]Iris[/name], which I personally think is kinda cute.
[name]Do[/name] you like it? Or were you looking for other ideas?
Thank you, some wonderful suggestions there. I hadn’t thought of [name]Izzy[/name]. A friend also knew an [name]Ibby[/name] which is lovely also.
[name]Digby[/name] isn’t very popular on this site but we love it. It’s a family name so we were familiar with it before we picked it. My [name]Digby[/name] is now 7 and we couldn’t imagine him with another name.
[name]Adelaide[/name] is also a family name but it took me a long time to like it as I kept thinking of the city. In the end when she arrived it seemed like the perfect name for her, plus we never thought we would live there. But as it turned out, we moved there for a work opportunity for a year. We met several Adelaides of [name]Adelaide[/name]. We were told by one that The [name]Lord[/name] Mayor’s daughter was called [name]Adelaide[/name] and all the [name]Adelaide[/name]'s of [name]Adelaide[/name] were invited to tea at the town hall every year! Isn’t that fab!
Yes I agree that [name]Irie[/name] is a natural fit but it sounds a bit prickly and with one high spirited daughter I wouldn’t like another with “ire” such a prominent part of the name!
I love [name]Iris[/name]! I think [name]Irie[/name] and Rissy (or even [name]Rissa[/name]), but that’s just me. The only [name]Iris[/name] I’ve known personally was just [name]Iris[/name], I don’t think I’ve ever heard her referred to as anything other than [name]Iris[/name], but I believe she moved to Australia at some point, so now I’m insanely curious if she got a nn while she was over there!
The only other nn idea I have is to maybe use a nn based on her initials? For example, if she’s [name]Iris[/name] [name]Olivia[/name], she could be [name]Io[/name] (like the moon!) or if she’s [name]Iris[/name] [name]Valentina[/name], she could be [name]Ivy[/name]/IV.
Or… I suppose you could do [name]Cissy[/name]/[name]Sissy[/name] or [name]Cece[/name], but both are a bit of a stretch?
[name]Ibby[/name] is darling! Sorry I know it has already been mentioned, and I don’t actually have anything else to offer but it’s just too sweet. Good luck - I love [name]Iris[/name]!
I realise this post was from a while ago but I couldn’t resist a reply. I [name_u]Love[/name_u] your names! It is such a coincidence because we have a little boy called [name_m]Digby[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] as well! It is my favourite name ever. I am pregnant with my 4 th baby and we have [name_f]Iris[/name_f] on our short list. I have a [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_u]Freddy[/name_u] ([name_m]Frederick[/name_m]) and a [name_m]Digby[/name_m]. Obviously share the same sort of name tastes!
