Iro

Iro [EE-ro] is a modern Greek name meaning “hero”. It comes from the Ancient Greek word ἥ”ως meaning “defender, protector”. It is typically a feminine name and form of [name_u]Hero[/name_u] though I personally find it more appealing for a boy.

What do you think of Iro? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s usable? If so, what middle name(s) would you suggest?

Thanks!

I’m really into short, punchy, three-letter names for boys at the moment, so this one caught my attention. Iro, said EE-ro is really nice and I like it.

That said, admittedly, when I read the title and not being at all familiar with the name, I read it as EYE-ro, which is not nearly as nice. I wonder how many others might do the same? It’s easily corrected, though.

Middle name uggestions…Iro [name_m]Tristram[/name_m], Iro [name_m]Hawthorn[/name_m], Iro [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], Iro [name_u]Constantine[/name_u], Iro [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], Iro [name_m]Percival[/name_m], Iro [name_u]Jameson[/name_u], Iro [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], Iro [name_m]Willem[/name_m], Iro [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] & Iro [name_m]Dominic[/name_m].

That’s such a good point about the pronunciation, it’s definitely a stumbling block for this name. I agree that IE-ro isn’t nearly as nice.

I love your suggestions of Iro [name_m]Hawthorn[/name_m], Iro [name_u]Constantine[/name_u], and Iro [name_m]Finnian[/name_m].

Thank you!

I like it &would not at all think of it as a girl name. Definitely boy name for me.

It definitely rings masculine for me as well.

Thanks!

Sorry I can’t see it as a boys names, thats only because I have known many females Iros. Based on sounds and looks I can see it working as a male name outside of Greece. The meaning is lovely.

Edit: forgot to write that the Greek pronunciation is ee-RAW.

The meaning is lovely, but I have to agree - I originally thought Iro was “eye-ro” not “ee-ro.” Now that I know the actual pronunciation, I really like it! It’s a strong name.

When I hear the name Iro, I would assume Greek (as in Greek nationality/ethnicity) and female.

@bellerose: That’s completely understandable given your familiarity with the name. Thank you so much for sharing your opinion and the Greek pronunciation!

@tileishamaree: I’m glad you like it. Thanks!

@choupette: That’s great to know. Thank you for sharing!
