Is Adonis an appropriate name to give a child?

I personally quite like it, especially when pairing it with the nickname donnie. However I’ve heard that its more suited as a dogs name… So I’m just curious to hear more opinions on it and how it might fair if given to a child in this day and age

I think it’s an acceptable name to give a child, if other deity names like [name_m]Odin[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] and [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] are OK.

For me personally, it’s a bit… much, like calling a child Casanova or something, but it doesn’t strike me as a “dog name” at all.

I know that some people have used it, especially celebrities, I don’t like it. It’s a lot to live up to and the whole “lover of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]” and “epitome of male perfection/sexuality” thing is just too strong for me to get behind.

I agree with PP. Personally I think it is a heavy name to live up to, essentially being synonymous with the perfect male. “Wow, he’s an [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]!” (this could be meant very sarcastically if the child turns out to be less than that). Maybe as a middle?

Oof. Are you a Hellenist, or do you have Greek roots? I don’t like this trend of naming children after deities when the parents have no connection to him or her. It’s a really big gesture. Of course, if you don’t believe in any of that you should go ahead and do it.

With [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] specifically, I think that there should be a good reason behind giving that name to a child. Why? Because unfortunately “[name_m]Adonis[/name_m]” is used in a rather mocking way in the English languages. An “[name_m]Adonis[/name_m]” is slang for a very attractive man. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] heard the phrase “well, I’m not exactly [name_m]Adonis[/name_m], but I’m not bad looking” or something similar? This could lead to mockery if someone has that name and isn’t exactly an ‘[name_m]Adonis[/name_m]’ in looks.

I like it. I wouldn’t use it myself but I think if you’re brave - it’s usable.

I actually grew up with a boy named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]! I think it worked well for him. While I’m not personally a fan myself, if you like it, I think its usable.

I don’t think it’s “inappropriate,” I just don’t think it’s a very attractive name.

I don’t think it’s an inappropriate name but it is a name that gives the kid a lot to live up to. I wouldn’t want the burden of such a name, especially if i were a physically unfit or unattractive teenager. Kids can be very cruel!

I don’t find it inappropriate, just a lot to live up to.

It certainly sounds nice, but I would never do it…the expectations are way to high!

[name_m]Adonis[/name_m] is a lover, more a description than a name.
I would say the same about [name_m]Romeo[/name_m].
When we say that someone is a [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] we mean …watch out!

I have heard of a person named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] but I can’t remember who they are (a celebrity perhaps?). I think it’s a cool name, but might seem rather ironic on someone who’s not conventionally attractive.

I don’t mind it at all, and think it is perfectly useable.

[name_m]Adonis[/name_m] Bosso?

I wouldn’t do it. Too much to live up to.
