Is Arthur too popular now?

According to the SSA website, [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] was ranked at about 140 last year. I feel likes it’s only going to continue to rise due to Peaky Blinders becoming more popular in the US now.

Is [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] going to become as popular as [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_u]Henry[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], etc.?

We prefer to stay away from names that have a sudden surge in popularity, so I’m weary [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is only going to continue to shoot up the charts.

I’ve never met an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], so it doesn’t seem popular to me… yet. I feel the same way about [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I know it is a popular name, it hasn’t stuck around long enough for me to hear it a lot. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] does get popular, I think the real question is how long it will stay popular, but that is impossible to predict.

I’ve never met and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], so it definitely doesn’t feel popular to me! I don’t see it becoming overly popular personally…perhaps it will rise in some circles but I don’t imagine it becoming too “mainstream”. Who knows though!!

Ditto the previous posters: I’ve never met an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]! Doesn’t seem popular at all to me. A year at rank 140 won’t, I don’t think, be enough to sustain a name’s popularity. I suppose time will tell, but for now [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] feels familiar and uncommon to me.

It’s in the UK top 10 atm and has been for several years, but it had been steadily climbing since 2008 and then rapidly climbing since 2015, so it is a name that’s being used a lot over here and sometimes UK and US share trends. It is definitely possible it might get more popular but I don’t think it will leap into the top 10 US either for a long while (or at all?)

I like the name [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. If it is still low in the US charts, I’d use it. It’s impossible to know how popular a name might get, so you might as well go with a name you love. Sometimes parents go with something rare and still meet another child with the same name! Your [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] may or may not meet another. Though you might be bothered by that, will he? I doubt it.

I have an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. He’s three, and we know one other who’s around ten, but they live across the US from us. I’ve never heard of Peaky Blinders; we chose his name after my husband’s grandfather.

Arthur’s certainly in the same style group as other top names right now, but I’ll be surprised if it gets to the top ten level of popularity.

I’ve never met an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], but I’m hearing of it more and more. It’s common in Europe, so I would assume it will gain more popularity in the US as well.

I honestly don’t see it becoming super popular in the US. It seems somehow like a distinctly [name_f]British[/name_f] kind of name to my American ears, in the vein of [name_u]Harry[/name_u], [name_m]Archie[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], etc. The popularity of names “across the pond” can influence parents and no doubt [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] has enjoyed some boost in [name_u]America[/name_u] via its popularity in the UK plus the vintage revival trend, but it doesn’t… sound like a popular American name in the way that [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Henry[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] do, if that makes sense? I don’t know how to qualitatively describe it, but it just doesn’t sound to my American ears like it’ll catch on with a majority of the population. Plus, American millennials will likely associate it with the [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] TV show that was popular when we were children which isn’t necessarily a bad association but it’s a large one so I can see younger parents not going for [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] because of it.

Overall, I think it has potential to rise, maybe even hit the top 100, but I don’t think it will catch on here like it it has in the UK.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I can totally see [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] becoming more popular. I wouldn’t say that it’s for certain, but it does fit the mold of sweet yet manly old fashioned name that is popular across the pond and is slowly on the rise in the U.S. I actually know three kids named [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], but they’re actually all middle school/high school aged. They’re all sort of from the same neighborhood too. I haven’t heard it a ton for little ones recently.

For what its worth, [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is darling & classic. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

[name_f]My[/name_f] guess would be an upward trend for this name, yes. Especially since it combines fantasy and the resurgence in vintage 1920s names.

Honestly, I absolutely think it will climb high in the charts. It’s already getting more popular, in just five years it’s jumped almost a hundred spots and I don’t see it going down anytime soon. People didn’t think that [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would get crazy popular either but in 10ish years it made its way from the 200s to the top 10, I expect the same thing to happen with [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] especially because both him and other name like it are trending (Oliver, [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_u]Nolan[/name_u], etc)

I think it will continue to climb, it has everything to get to the top.
But today’s popularity doesn’t mean you’ll personally meet that many. I know 2 [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and zero [name_u]Noah[/name_u] or [name_u]Henry[/name_u].

Honestly if not for an unfortunate family reference it would totally be one of my top boy names too.

We only know one [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] who is 5/6 . I don’t think it’s going to rise as high as [name_u]Noah[/name_u] but in the top 100.

[name_u]Nolan[/name_u] was also one we had considered and then crossed off our list because of its surge in popularity. Actually heard one being shouted out at the park today, haha! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is going to be just as popular? It has also been a contender for us and my only hesitancy with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] has been how popular it already is (in my book, I know to a lot of people it isn’t… yet) and how much MORE popular I assume it will get.

I do think Felix will get more popular, I think eventually breaking the top 100, but I don’t think it will hit top 10 popularity, or even top 50. Felix at it’s highest popularity so far was at #154 and that was literally in 1902, I think it’ll trend into the top hundred but then slowly drop back into the 200s, not common but not unpopular and still well known, kind of a semi-classic. If I’m being completely honest I really really like Felix, and if you really love it (or any name), I’d use it regardless of popularity, and that comes from someone who tries to avoid popular names as much as possible

I would use it since it is currently out of the top 100. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it surges, the chances of having a child with the same name in his class are still not very high. I don’t think it will ever be in the top 10. Best to pick a name you love instead of selecting another that you don’t love as much but is less popular.
