Is Aurora a Princess Name?

I love the name [name]Aurora[/name]. It reminds me of dawn, light, and the aurora borealis. I thought it would be a great name for both a child and an adult. Then I found out about the princess association. When I started running it by people, the majority were immediately reminded of Sleeping Beauty. I’m sure a little girl would have no problem with this, but what a pain to be an adult with a Disney-fied name. I’m curious to hear what others think.

I don’t think that that many people make that connection. [name]Aurora[/name] is very pretty and I agree that it works at all ages. Plus the tom-boyish nn [name]Rory[/name] is so fun! Good luck!

I did know that [name]Aurora[/name] is sleeping beauties name, but, for me, it is a name separate and apart from the movie. Now [name]Cinderella[/name] is definitely a [name]Princess[/name] name and I feel that way a bit about [name]Ariel[/name] too for some reason. But I definitely think that [name]Aurora[/name] (and [name]Belle[/name]) are not total princess names. I’ve know a few Auroras in my lifetime and I’ve never associated them with a Disney princess.

In fact, I’m sort of surprised Disney used [name]Aurora[/name] bc doesn’t really fit in my mind with the other princesses. Plus, most kids call her Sleeping Beauty, not [name]Aurora[/name].

I think it’s a beautiful name (which a Disney princess happens to have), but not a princess name.

I think it is a princess name for the 3-9 year olds, and that they, like us, will get past that when they’re ready to. I agree with the others that [name]Belle[/name] and [name]Jasmine[/name] are not inextricably linked to Disney, and [name]Aurora[/name] shouldn’t be either.

Also, [name]Aurora[/name] has been Sleeping Beauty’s name before Disney - here is the amazing [name]Diana[/name] Vishneva dancing [name]Aurora[/name]'s Variation from Act 1 of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty:

though is seems she has also had many other names:

Hahaha! I’m such an idiot. Of course, Disney did not come up with Sleeping Beauty or the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid and/or their names for that matter! With a three year old who loves mickey mouse clubhouse, I must be drinking the kool-aid bc I totally forgot about that!

Hubby works with a guy whose first daughter was 4 or 5 when their second came along. To get her involved with the pregnancy they let her pick her new baby sister’s name. She chose [name]Ariel[/name] because [name]Little[/name] Mermaid was her favorite movie at the time. When her brother was born a year or so later, they let her pick again. She was still into [name]Little[/name] Mermaid so she picked [name]Sebastian[/name]. They had a little oops a few year later. All the kids were into [name]Toy[/name] [name]Story[/name] at the time and the baby boy was named [name]Woody[/name]. I don’t know that kids would associate [name]Aurora[/name] with Sleeping Beauty, but this guy complains all the time because his kids’ classmates all knew which movies they were named for and were teased quite a bit for it. He blames his kids for picking the names, though, and doesn’t think it’s his or his wife’s fault.

[name]Woody[/name], seriously? Well, that’s what they get for letting toddlers pick baby names, my daughter wanted to name this baby (still not here yet): Cusi, Cusi, Cusi (bird’s name - toddler picked it), then when i told her it was already the bird’s name, cinco, cinco, cinco (yes, five, five, five in spanish), then sand, then house, and now [name]Abby[/name] (I suppose from abby kadabby). She’s getting better at the naming thing, but she is still not naming her sister. Mean mommy, I know.

Wow, that is some irresponsible parenting. They could have at least given poor [name]Woody[/name] the respectable full name [name]Woodrow[/name]. [name]Ariel[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name] are perfectly fine names on their own, but in the same sibset? I love just about everything Disney but that’s just too much.

Anyway, back to the original poster. I think [name]Aurora[/name] is a beautiful name (love the nickname [name]Rory[/name]) and while I do think of Sleeping Beauty, it’s not a bad or overwhelming association. It’s not like say, [name]Cinderella[/name] (Sidenote, I have actually seen this name in birth announcements. It makes me shudder. I mean, [name]Cinderella[/name]'s real name wasn’t even [name]Cinderella[/name]. It was [name]Ella[/name], for pity’s sake!). I’m sure you’ll get the occasional Sleeping Beauty comment, but I don’t think it makes the name any less usable.

i love the name [name]Aurora[/name]. i know it’s sleeping beauty’s name, but i don’t associate it with her. Most of the kids i know call her sleeping beauty, not aurora.
