We are looking for a unique name for our upcoming baby and really like the name [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. While this name is not that popular, it is very close in spelling to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] which is rising very quickly in the U.S. and is already number 46 in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. We understand that [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is its own name, but being so close in spelling and sound to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] it has us concerned that its uniqueness is tied to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and thus is no longer a unique name.
When I say unique I mean a name that will not be one of many in a classroom or one of many on the playground etc.
Yeah, I get what you’re saying about the whole ice/ix thing! However - for just me personally - I come up with totally different images in my head of the person I would associate each name to. I think they’re different enough as well that it doesn’t sound like you’re trying to come up with something just for the sake of being different, like sometimes people may do e.g. different spellings of the same name, picking [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Danielle[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is really, really unique, but not only that, fun, a little spunky, and confident. Its relation to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is actually a little bit of a plus for me, it brings it back down to earth and makes it have more of a vintage feel. I think it is a really pretty name, I would totally use it!
In my opinion, [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is in a class of its own and is separate of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. Especially with the strong [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-a-[name_f]TRIX[/name_f] emphasis on the trix. I really like it and think it will not be blended in with the more popular beatrice.
Um, yes. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are the same name, they are not simply related, they are slight variations of the exact same name. It is like the difference between [name_m]Steven[/name_m] and [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] - they are spelt and pronounced a little differently, but they’re basically the same. It’s a matter of taste which version you prefer, but I would say that if [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is popular, [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is also by default. If you’re saying them fast they can easily get muddled. The difference is one little k sound. [name_f]Beatris[/name_f], Beatriks. They are actually closer than [name_m]Steven[/name_m] and [name_m]Stefan[/name_m]. Realistically I don’t think a little [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is going to stand out that much if there are lots of Beatrices.
I mean, look at it this way. Nobody would ever think of naming sisters [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], would they? That would be absurd because of how close they are.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is in the mid 500’s in [name_u]America[/name_u]. If you don’t live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], popularity shouldn’t be an issue because it’s not that popular of a name, [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] much less. Names aren’t exactly how the used to be, there’s more names and more parents are picking unique names. There won’t be 5 beatrices in each class. She might bump into one in life, but it’s not the name [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. If you love a name, use it!
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] feel very different to me, and I think that people may become more attracted to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] enough for it to enter the top 1000. The -trix ending makes it more up to date; I imagine 1950s film star, whereas [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is more Victorian (or even further back). But I very much doubt it would become popular enough for there to be more than 1 [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] in a class, for example.
They are in essence the same name. The only difference is that [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is the original Latin form, with the Latin feminine -trix suffix, whereas [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is the Italian form, with the Italian feminine -trice suffix.
So then it seems like the consensus is that the popularity of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] should be a concern if we are considering [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. We are in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and #46 seems very high - ideally we wanted. to stay out of the top 100
