Is Bellatrix usable?

I dislike the character of [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] Lestrange intensely & because of that wouldn’t ever use the name. However, I know lots of people feel differently. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is much less tied to the world of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] because of its origins in Greek mythology.

If bellatrix lestrange was not evil, it would be usable. But who wants to be be named after a villan?

And im gonna throw Lyra outbthere as a star/constelation name thats alos a YA book character and awesome.

I would be nervous to go for it. But it is a beautiful name.

I vote yes. It’s totally usable. I’ve grown up with HP, but haven’t truly cemented the name in my mind as the all-evil-no-matter-what. Voldemort would be that name! Talk about not being usable, haha. Oh gosh, I just told my SO about this thread and he is reminding me of all her evil scenes. Sigh, okay, so she was super evil. Still…

There have been other names of characters I absolutely hated, particularly [name_m]Frank[/name_m] / [name_m]Jonathon[/name_m] [name_m]Randall[/name_m] from Outlander. But [name_m]Frank[/name_m], [name_m]Jonathon[/name_m], and [name_m]Randall[/name_m] are all great names! I’ve seen people choose [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] as a name, despite the connection to the sea witch. [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is also: a saint, [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s Two Gentlemen of [name_f]Verona[/name_f] and Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing, and the incredible writer [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_m]Le[/name_m] Guin.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] has a lot of stuff going for her. By the way, it’s derived from Bellator. I think a name can be reclaimed from fictional notoriety; were it named after a truly atrocious person in real life, I’d reconsider. Anyway, look at this:

In astrology it was the natal star of all destined to great civil or military honors, and rendered women born under its influence lucky and loquacious; or as old [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] Hood said, “Women born under this constellation shall have mighty tongues.” Dictionary.com

She is, after all, the third brightest star in our sky, sitting atop the shoulder of [name_u]Orion[/name_u]. The feminine suffix -trix is sassy as hell. [name_f]Bella[/name_f] is, of course, beautiful. There is something strategic and cunning about the name that can swerve away from the dishonor of Lestrange. It’s just super unfortunate that when you google the name for other classic mythological connections, all that comes up is HP.

No it is not a name

I’m more of a [name_m]Philip[/name_m] Pullman His Dark Materials fan than a [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan, so I wouldn’t have known the connection or the character.

Personally, I’d rather be named [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and if I were named [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] I’d change it to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

But since you love it and the girl could be called [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Trix[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] (or [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Bea[/name_f]) there seem to be plenty of options.
