Is this your first thought when the name [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] is suggested.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it will matter in 5 years time?
Cedric [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] does come to mind, but not immediately. And I consider it a positive association, so it doesn’t bother me.
I think [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] will still be popular in 5 years, but I don’t think that the [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] association is or will be overwhelming.
My first thought was sorcerer [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] from Sofia the First, actually! I don’t think the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association is too strong
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was “[name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]”, however, I also think of other [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]'s, so I don’t think it will matter in 5 or so years.
I absolutely love the name [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]. I do associate it somewhat with [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but that doesn’t feel like a problem; [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] is a good character. I also don’t think it’s a very strong association. [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] feels chivalrous and gentle and friendly!
I don’t think it’s too tied to [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]! I know a lovely little [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] myself, and he doesn’t have problems with the association.
I feel like it’s not particularly a bad association, [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] was a selfless character in my opinion.
But I don’t want people to just say… Oh [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] like from [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. The name has a lot of history and I think the HP reference is doing the actual name an injustice.
I totally echo @almostactually
I actually think of Little [name_m]Lord[/name_m] Fauntleroy first; his name is [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]. I think the character has more of a “sissy” connotation than he deserves, but I also think the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association is stronger. Whether it’s strong enough to garner many comments, I don’t know, but I agree with others that 5 years likely won’t make much difference.
I do like the name. I also think of Ivanhoe, which is one of the first places it was used, at least in print, correct?
Yes. They actually think that the author came across the name Cerdic and she or the publishers misspelled the name and it changed to [name_m]Cedric[/name_m].
Cerdic, taken from the Latin Cerdicus. Cerdic being the Leader of the Anglo-[name_u]Saxon[/name_u] settlement of [name_u]Britain[/name_u], being the founder and first king of [name_u]Saxon[/name_u] Wessex, reigning from 519 to 534 AD. Subsequent kings of Wessex were each claimed by the Chronicle to descend in some manner from Cerdic.
I do think of [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] but it’s not an overwhelming association. It’s not a bad association either.
If I met a baby [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] I don’t think my mind would go there first and I definitely wouldn’t assume the parents named him after the character.
No, I don’t think of [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
I think of [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] as a vintage name first
I’m going to disagree - before [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] was around, there was [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] the Entertainer. He was actually what came to mind first for me. He’s still active in TV, etc. I don’t find the name [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] to be unusable or too closely associated with [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I would only say that’s the case if the name seemed more exclusive to the series (wasn’t really a name people heard of before then) - [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] or [name_m]Hagrid[/name_m], for examples.
Nothing not to like about [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m]
Yes. I don’t know any other Cedrics. I’m not sure it matters now unless your last name happens to sound like [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] then it might need some time.
I do think of [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] but I feel [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] can stand apart from that
An acquaintance of mine recently named her baby [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]! I’ll admit my first thought was, “…[name_m]Diggory[/name_m]?” However, over the course of about an hour I went from wondering why she chose such a Harry [name_m]Potter[/name_m] name to realizing what a brilliant choice it was and totally falling in love with it. It’s now one of my favorite boy names!
All that to say, yes, I believe the association will automatically spring to mind for a lot of people. But! That does not mean it is unusable or won’t be well received. A name becomes the person it is given to, and all other associations fade until it is simply seen as their name.
It comes to mind, but I am a big [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan. I still like it though!
Our surname is MäckenzĂe
Kind of but that’s not a bad thing as I loved the character - both in the book and the films. I’ve got two Cedrics in my family actually and surprisingly I don’t immediately think HP when I say their name, the reference is sometimes just an afterthought to be honest.
