I really love the name [name]Crosby[/name] but I feel like it might sound trendy because it’s a surname. Is it a name that could become too popular or feel dated in a few years?
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Crosby[/name] too and am wondering the same thing you are! I ran into the name when a friend on Facebook posted a picture of her nephew (a toddler) and mentioned that his name was [name]Crosby[/name]. I thought it was unique, but then I began seeing it in these forums, and I discovered that it just entered the top 1,000 last year (United States). I share your concern about it becoming a fad. I don’t think it “sounds” trendy at all (despite its being a surname), but I’m afraid that it [name]WILL[/name] become a trend. I really want to convince my husband to love [name]Crosby[/name] [name]Dan[/name], but it will depend on where the name stands in the 2012 Social Security rankings.
I like it too but wonder the same thing. I wish the ssa rankings came out earlier than they do…we are due in [name]January[/name] so it will be no help to us
I think it is really hard to say how the surname thing is going to work out. It works well on [name]Anderson[/name] [name]Cooper[/name] and other names have made it to the mainstream (i.e. [name]Madison[/name]), but which surname will hit is hard. You also have the pop culture influence of [name]Crosby[/name] on the show Parenthood. Pop culture names seem to mirror trends of the time and while they don’t always create trends, they give them airtime.
The tough thing is figuring out not whether [name]Crosby[/name] is going to become more popular but whether it will become popular and then feel dated, as you said above. For example, I doubt we’re in for another round of Brittanys any time soon. I don’t think [name]Crosby[/name] is in danger for that any time soon, but it is a great name that could become popular. It has a manly sound that appeals to women who are naming the babies because it sounds softer than other manly names. It has a little swagger, a little bit of a cowboy air and it will age well.
I always assumed the name [name]Crosby[/name] popped up on people’s radars because of [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name]. Where I live, [name]Sidney[/name] and [name]Crosby[/name] are trendy because of him. I consider it trendy when people name their kids after celebrities.
Now if people are considering the name, without even knowing who [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name] is, I would still say it is trendy because using surnames as first names is more trendy now than ever. I don’t think it will ever be a popular name though.
