I looooove [name]Dempsey[/name] for a girl. The thing is, I only know it as a girl’s name (someone I know online used it). I hadn’t known it could be used for boys until recently, so I feel like this clouds my judgment.
Would I be setting a potential daughter up for a lifetime of constantly being mistaken for a boy, or does it work? We would most likely call her [name]Demi[/name] for short.
Would [name]Demi[/name] be better on it’s own? (“Demmy”, not “De-mee”).
Definitely not liking [name]Dempsey[/name] on a girl. It reminds me of a Teletubby (Tinky Winky, [name]Dempsey[/name], La La and [name]Po[/name]?) and sounds too much like dipsy and ditzy.
If she would go by [name]Demi[/name], I would go ahead and put that on the birth certificate. Or perhaps something like [name]Demetra[/name] if you wanted a longer name? I think [name]Demi[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] is fine though.
I personally know a girl named [name]Dempsey[/name]. She is very intellegent and wears the name well. It’s not a favorite of mine, and I have always wondered about the origins, but she doesn’t seem to have any problems with it. Since she is the only person I have known with the name (and because I’ve know her for several years), I don’t see [name]Dempsey[/name] as anything but a girl’s name. So, yes, [name]Dempsey[/name] is definitely okay on a girl. I don’t think it’s a common enough name for people to get it too confused. And I love it combined with the classic [name]Margaret[/name]. Beautiful.
I’ve actually never heard of [name]Dempsey[/name] being used for a boy or a girl but I love it!!! Especailly for a girl. I think it is sooo beautiful and unique without being made up. Plus you are garunteed that she will be the only [name]Dempsey[/name] in her class.
I don’t like [name]Dempsey[/name] on a girl. All of the name associations I have with [name]Dempsey[/name] are male: boxer, soccer player, actor. I don’t think it has enough of a feminine sound because the first syllable is Demp. It only sounds like “unpretty” words. Dump damp dim . If you like the nickname [name]Demi[/name] you could try
Sorry, but I really don’t like it. My first thought is [name]Patrick[/name] [name]Dempsey[/name], so I find the name to be very masculine and surnamey. I think [name]Demi[/name] would be a much better option. I also like [name]Demetra[/name] and [name]Demeter[/name], but if those aren’t your style then I would definitely go with [name]Demi[/name] [name]Margaret[/name].
I think you and your daughter migtht might get this reaction alot… I’ve never met anyone whose first name is [name]Dempsey[/name] so it was my first association. I underfortunately have to agree with the masses here, I don’t like it all.
I think [name]Demi[/name] is great. It’s a little short for my taste, but I know a girl named [name]Demi[/name] who wears it well. Although, I think she has to say “Yes, [name]Demi[/name], that’s it.” quite a bit, so you may want to consider a longer name, one that’s a little more “wearable”.
My first thought was of the actor also. I think on paper she would mistaken for a boy. Going with [name]Demi[/name] or one the other suggestions would make more sense to me.
[name]Dempsey[/name] is a surname in my family, and I have several cousins that carry it. [name]Every[/name] single one of them has the nickname “dumpster”. One embraces it (she even has it on the back of her softball jersey), while the others despise it. The girls can’t wait to get married and get rid of it!
I personally love love love the name [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] for a girl! I love last names for first names, and I also love boys names for girls names. So yes, I am aware that there are guys that have the last name [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] and it sounds a bit masculine. However, I think it is very pretty and will work beautifully.
However I’m not sure about calling her [name_f]Demi[/name_f]. It just defeats the purpose of such a unique and strong name like [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]. Either own it or don’t use it.
Also to all the people who are bullied for having the name [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]: maybe you should consider getting nicer and more accepting friends.
Also to all the people who like the names of [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] characters, flowers/plants, and nature: maybe we just have very very different styles and have you ever thought that you should be a little more open? sorry, but really don’t like your names either.
I think [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is beautiful on a girl! I’m a big fan of surnames on both genders (ex. [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_u]Lennon[/name_u], [name_m]Halston[/name_m], [name_u]Campbell[/name_u], etc. on girls). [name_f]Demi[/name_f] is an adorable nickname and I love combo [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!
[name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is okay. My only thing is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is too long. [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] [name_f]Margo[/name_f] , [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Mae[/name_f]? {means pearl just like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]}
In an age where people name their kids [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_m]Ford[/name_m], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f] etc. I think a female [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] will fit in just fine. It always amazes me when people are okay with names like the ones above but say “absolutely not” to putting male names on girls. I honestly didn’t even know [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] was a first name until your post, but I don’t see any problems with it; although I do automatically think of [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m], but I’m sure you already factored that into your decision. Tons of kids sport surnames nowadays (think [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_u]Walker[/name_u], [name_m]Lawson[/name_m], [name_m]Cullen[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] etc.) so [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] fits right into that trend. Good luck
I think it’s fine on either a boy or girl. [name_f]Demi[/name_f] is a pretty nickname!
While [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is not my style I definitely think it’s usable!
