Is Dickon Usable?

I have always loved the name Dickon, ever since I heard it in The [name]Secret[/name] Garden book. [name]Do[/name] you think it is usable in today’s society?

I really love it  There was a Dickon on a (really hard and complicated) kids gameshow called Knightmare when I was little. That’s where I heard it first. His group were one of the few who actually won.

I’d say no. Anything with “dick” in it will probably lead to teasing. I knew some people at school who had “cock” as part of their surname (e.g. Cockburn) and they got teased about it.

[name]How[/name] about Rickon? There is a minor character in Game of Thrones named Rickon. It has a similar feel to it, but doesn’t have the same problems that Dickon has.

I like [name]Dickson[/name] but Dickon is quite literally “dick on”.
I don’t see how that won’t lead to real life teasing in school.

Seriously? Sorry, but absolutely not. Dickon is a name that would be teased mercilessly.

I’m totally with you here, albeit for different reasons (it was a nickname of [name]Richard[/name] III - MASSIVE fan), but in all honesty I don’t think it’s usable today. However, I could definitely see it working as a family nickname for [name]Richard[/name] used at home. Also love pp’s suggestion of Rickon.

Absolutely not. Never

No, it’s not.

This. [name]Just[/name] say no.

Third this. Please no.

I don’t actually mind the sound of the name… But I really suggest you don’t name a child that because boys are immature and insensitive and it will ultimately lead to him being teased. Something like [name]Dickson[/name] or [name]Dickinson[/name] would be better, but still not great.

I think it’s best to avoid naming a child anything with “dick” in it, or any other obvious reference to genitalia.

It’s too bad, because you’re referencing a wonderful character from a wonderful book.

No. You can’t use [name]Dick[/name] in a name without endless teasing.

No not at all… Rickon is though

Nope. Rickon is a cool alternative though, I like that!

No. Definitely, absolutely not.

No…in my opinion not a name a kid would want to have, as it would bring lots of teasing

Aww this is sad :frowning: Poor Dickon. I mean, I can see why everyone is saying no to it regarding teasing. But… if Dickon is avoided because of teasing shouldn’t that also mean that names like [name]Virginia[/name] and [name]William[/name] are out of bounds? Technically it’s the same sort of thing; kids could use virgin and willy as insults.

I kind of feel the same way, it’s such an endearing name, really :frowning: But I just don’t think it would go down well in today’s (immature, name-ruining) society.
