Is Ellery too "Celery"?

I absolutely adore the name [name_u]Ellery[/name_u], and I have it all partnered up to create a full name and everything, but I am curious… do you think the fact that it rhymes with celery is a limitation?

Sorry, but I always think ‘[name_u]Ellery[/name_u] celery’ when I see it. I’d opt for [name_u]Avery[/name_u], though it’s rather popular, or [name_f]Helena[/name_f].

As a middle name, I think you could get away with it. I do prefer other [name_f]Ell[/name_f]- names though, [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] feels a bit awkward to me. It’s not the celery thing, more that it sounds like you’re saying [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-ry, like being reminded of [name_f]Ella[/name_f], if that makes any sense. Like you’d say something’s a bit Londony, if it reminds you of [name_u]London[/name_u], that sort of thing.

I do not think celery when I hear or see [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]. You could choose the welsh name [name_f]Eleri[/name_f].

No, I just find it too trendy and insubstantial.

For me…yes…it’s very Celery.

Indeed  [name_f]Eleri[/name_f] (eh-LAIR-ee) is very pretty. With [name_u]Ellery[/name_u], I just think ‘boy’s name’.

I really like it & don’t think celery! I like the suggestion of [name_f]Eleri[/name_f] too.

I absolutely adore the name. I have no problem with “Celery” and I think [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] is a very cute, yet modern name.

I like [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]-never seen it spelled like that only Ellory. Sounds like a wonderful poet, artist, Dr. or musician!

I find it wish-washy and trend-esque, but the celery thing isn’t the issue. I actually find Celerie or [name_f]Cicely[/name_f] far more interesting.

Yes - I think as it rhymes with celery it is a large limitation.

I don’t like the name [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] either…it seems like a made up name to me!

Yes, [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] is too much like celery for me.

I’m not a fan of [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] or of the nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Ella[/name_f]…I agree with a PP that this could be better in a mn spot instead but not as a fn

Thanks so much for all the feedback. I see we have quite a few different opinions here! I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Eleri[/name_f], it has more “oomph”, and does sound less like a boy’s name. I might pronounce it [name_f]Eller[/name_f]-ee or [name_f]El[/name_f]-air-ee, but it’s going in the middle spot anyway (as a second middle), so it’s not of extreme importance. Thanks again to everyone who shared their opinion!

[name_u]Ellery[/name_u] would be high on my list if it weren’t for the celery connection. I really like [name_u]Emery[/name_u], which I see as similar, the only problem is [name_u]Emery[/name_u] would be too easily confused with [name_f]Emily[/name_f] I think.

I don’t imagine celery. [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] makes me think of the cockapoo (cocker spaniel + poodle mix) that my mom’s family had when she was in high school; he apparently lived until I was about two, and he features prominently in a few of my mother’s well-told stories of growing up, so [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] is a pet’s name to me.
