Is Emmeline a "real" name?

I’m hoping I have found “the” name but have some reservations!

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think inside the US the pronunciation is going to be a big issue? I know there are differences when talking about the US vs EU but within the US? I pronounce it [name]Emma[/name]-line not [name]Emma[/name]- leen (sounds too much like [name]Emily[/name] when said outloud)

  2. Does it work with a brother [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Felix[/name]?

  3. I need some validation that it’s a “real” name and not just a smoosh between [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name]. Nameberry says that it has medieval roots, anyone have any information on that? I know of [name]Emmeline[/name] Pankhurst but that wasn’t really very long ago. I just want to make sure I am picking a real name with history.

  4. [name]Do[/name] you get the same vibe from [name]Emmeline[/name] that you do from [name]Emily[/name]? I am worried they are too similar.

Also, if anyone has a daughter named [name]Emmeline[/name] maybe they can tell me how it’s been received and if they have had a lot of trouble with pronounciation? Thank you all so much!

[name]Emmeline[/name] is such a pretty name!

  1. I don’t think pronunciation is a big issue, but I do think it will be an issue sometimes. I’m in the US, and I pronounce it emma-leen. -[name]Line[/name] is just one of those tricky endings; it can be “line” as in [name]Caroline[/name], it can be “leen” as in [name]Angeline[/name], and both are legitimate, so you’ll get people going either way, especially with a more unfamiliar name like [name]Emmeline[/name]. You’ll just have to correct them.

  2. I really like it with [name]Felix[/name], and it’s nice with [name]Leo[/name] when pronounced like “emma-line.”

  3. It is definitely a real name, introduced into [name]England[/name] in [name]Norman[/name] times. You can see more at behindthename: Meaning, origin and history of the name Emmeline - Behind the Name

  4. No, I get a different vibe. [name]Emmeline[/name] is quainter and more old fashioned.

  1. [name]Emmeline[/name] is a stunning choice. I say it with the -line ending as well, and while I think you might need to say it a few times, people will soon catch on. Your (our?) pronunciation is not odd in any way, but considering there are three accepted [name]Emmeline[/name] pronunciations, as with [name]Madeline[/name], you’ll need to just say it. No biggie!

  2. [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name]. [name]Love[/name]! [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name]. Might love that more! I think it’s a win-win.

  3. Absolutely a real name. And, the name has history by being attached to a suffragist, even if “wasn’t really very long ago.” Still history! But, here’s a write-up on the name by [name]Abby[/name] at Appellation Mountain (http://appellationmountain.net/2009/08/03/name-of-the-day-emmeline/). Fascinating!

  4. [name]Emmeline[/name] has a certain charm and whimsy that classic (and beautiful) [name]Emily[/name] doesn’t have. Whereas [name]Emily[/name] feels smart and solid and yuppy, [name]Emmeline[/name] feels creative and sophisticated and vintage. I think [name]Emmeline[/name] takes [name]Emily[/name] a few steps further. I think she’s fab!

[name]Lemon[/name]

  1. I’m not sure, as a [name]Brit[/name] I say [name]Emma[/name]-line.

  2. Yes if you use the [name]Emma[/name]-line pronounciation.

  3. I know of an [name]Emmeline[/name] who lived (1076 - 1125) so it certainly has some history. I grew up in a small town called ******* d’Abetot in the UK. The d’Abetots were an important local family in medievil times. The father was the [name]Sheriff[/name] of Worcestershire and royal official under Kings [name]William[/name] I, [name]William[/name] II and [name]Henry[/name] I. He had a daugter [name]Emmeline[/name] who herself married into the family of the [name]Earl[/name] of Warwick who were another big family at the time. Urse d'Abetot - Wikipedia

  4. [name]Emmeline[/name] has always seemed elegant and more refined and complete than either [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Emily[/name] to me. [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] are being used to within an inch of their lives.

Thank you all so much! And I am glad to have the “lemon seal of approval” !

It’s a name my husband and I both love and I’m so glad that it goes with both [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] (although it looks like we are going to use [name]Leo[/name] as husband is still hesitant about [name]Felix[/name] the cat). I guess now all I need to do is find a middle name!

[name]Leo[/name] is almost certainly going to be [name]Leo[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] and a combo my husband likes a lot for a girl is [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name], but is it too [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]? I know [name]Emmeline[/name] is a VERY minor character but I still wonder. [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Florence[/name] is another one we are thinking about. What do you guys think?

THANK YOU AGAIN! and a special thanks for all the links you guys posted- I read every single one and they were so helpful!

Ha! The “[name]Lemon[/name] [name]Seal[/name] of Approval” - that’s funny.

You know, [name]Emmeline[/name] was actually on my own list at one point, with [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Maria[/name] as my favored combinations, but then I decided I liked [name]Eliza[/name] better (and I have a matching letter phobia). I like [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Florence[/name] more than [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name], especially with potential vintage brother [name]Leo[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] (fab, by the way). However, [name]Emmeline[/name] is like [name]Alexander[/name] - strong and sturdy and sophisticated. [name]Leo[/name]? He’s a little bit spunky. So, I’d say find a spunky, sassy middle name in the vintage set for Miss [name]Emmeline[/name]! My ideas? [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Celia[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] (only if you’ve got a short last name!), [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Faye[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Margot[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Olive[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name] (again, for a short last name!), [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Posey[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Primrose[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Rosette[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Sylvie[/name], or [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Viola[/name]. I actually adore [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] or [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Daphne[/name] with (or without) [name]Leo[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]!

I love both [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name], but since [name]Ginevra[/name] only saw 15 births in 2010, I’m inclined to go with that one. (BTW, [name]Emmeline[/name] only saw 140 births in 2010.) I only mentally connected [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name] to [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] once you said it, if that helps. Having not read the books, I didn’t know [name]Emmeline[/name] was connected at all.

  1. I don’t think you have to worry about pronunciation in the US, I pronounce it [name]Emma[/name]-line and can’t think of any one I’ve heard ever pronounce an -ine ending with the -een sound.

  2. I think it could totally work with a brother [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Felix[/name]?

  3. Yeah, it’s definitely a real name. [name]Do[/name] you remember it from [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables? The girl she tutored at the girls school.

  4. I definitely don’t get the same vibe from [name]Emmeline[/name] that I do from [name]Emily[/name]? [name]Emmeline[/name] is a revived classic, getting more and more popular. I think [name]Emmeline[/name] is prettier,[name]IMO[/name].

Thanks for all the feedback! I am loving [name]Emmeline[/name] more and more everyday  I am still trying to think of a middle name. I love the suggestions so far but nothing is really sticking out as The One.

I have a one syllable last name that sounds like [name]Wynn[/name]. [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Wynn[/name]. Is that too much of a mouthful?

[name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Wynn[/name] is long but not overly so. Personally, I’d stick to a two-syllable middle name (e.g., [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Wynn[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Wynn[/name]), but that’s just my personal flow preference…

[name]Lemon[/name]

My daughter is named [name]Emmeline[/name]. I love the name. I first read it in the [name]Anne[/name] books with [name]Emeline[/name] [name]Harris[/name], and then again in some church history where I saw it spelled [name]Emmeline[/name]. She is now 8 years old and the cutest freckle-faced thing you’ve ever seen. And everyone LOVES her name. People often comment on how beautiful it is. She seems to like to too. Sometimes she is nicknamed [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Emme[/name]. And my brother loves to call her [name]Lemon[/name]-Lime, which doesn’t bother any of us at all. I have five children and [name]Emmeline[/name] is still by far my favorite name of them all.

  1. I pronounce it ‘em-eh-leen’ but I’m English.

  2. Yes I think they go great together

  3. This has pretty much been answered.

  4. I find [name]Emmeline[/name] to be more sophisticated than [name]Emily[/name] if that makes sense, though I like both names.

I pronounce it "[name]Emma[/name]-line’.

It’s a different vibe than [name]Emily[/name], more old fashioned and classic.

Is [name]Emmeline[/name] really pronounced [name]Emma[/name]-line? Because whenever I say it out loud I always make sure to make the [name]Em[/name]-me be heard. Might just be me, afterall I’m not a native English speaker.

I pronnounce it like Emm-el-een or Emm-el-in if I’m saying it fast. I don’t like the -line prn. It doesn’t sound smush at all and I think it is a very pretty name.

Yep! I think [name]Emmeline[/name] is a beautiful
Vintage name. Nice spin on emily and [name]Emma[/name]. [name]Will[/name] have some pronunciation issues but nothing major. I would still use it

I hated it for years thinking it was pronounced ‘[name]Emma[/name]-leen’.

I quite like it pnd ‘[name]Emma[/name]-line’ but still, there are far too many Es for my liking. Something about the letters as a whole makes it seem a bit ‘wishy-washy’ and bland for some reason. But I’m fairly sure that’s just me.

I prefer [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Evangeline[/name].

My daughter’s name is [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. We also considered [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Violet[/name] (still love!) and [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Grace[/name], but worried about [name]Grace[/name] being way too popular right now. Other names that I like with it are [name]Cora[/name] or [name]Flora[/name] (yes, I know these rhyme!) We pronounce her name with the leen sound, and don’t have many issues. Some call it with the ‘line’ when they read it, but I like both ways  We have had great feedback on the name!

That’s how I would pronounce it too, actually I think [name]Emma[/name]-line sounds weird, but that might just be me.
