Is Epsilon just too much?

The name Epsilon (pronounced ehp-sih-lahn) has started to interest me. It’s the fifth letter in the Greek alphabet. But I am also starting to worry that it’s not much of a name, hard to pronounce and just wouldn’t work over all. What do you think? Thanks in advance :slightly_smiling_face:.

To be honest, as a Greek speaker I would find it extremely odd. In the States, I wonder if it might be too associated with university sororities and fraternities, I’m not sure, but to me it’s just very… random, I guess. [name_f]My[/name_f] reaction to it would just be, “why did they use this as a name?”. To me it’s no different than naming your kid Doubleyou for the letter W  The sound is okay and I don’t think it’d be too hard to pronounce, though.

I think it is too much for a first name. Better Greek alphabet names, in my opinion, are…
[name_u]Delta[/name_u]
Rho
[name_u]Chi[/name_u]
[name_f]Zeta[/name_f]
[name_u]Tau[/name_u]
Iota
Eta
[name_f]Theta[/name_f]

I agree with @tallemaja on the fraternity/sorority relation generally for Greek letter names in the US.

That’s pretty fair lol. Thanks for your take on the name.

Maybe it could grow on me - at the moment, it sounds a bit awkward - it reminds me of printers

I don’t think it’s hard to pronounce although I say it slightly differently to you in my accent ep-sih-lon

I mean if you like it cool, after all people are called abcde and seven so it’s not that different to that is it really. But yes for me it’s a little much. I think I would struggle with seeing any Greek letter as a name. I would wonder on meeting an epsilon if their parents were autistic with a special interest in languages/alphabets. I also really dislike the ‘sil’ sound in the middle. It just makes me think of “silly” which I feel could be one of many teasing possibilities, and is a word I have strong negative associations with.

I’m not worried about the Greek letter association, [name_u]Omega[/name_u], [name_f]Zeta[/name_f], [name_f]Theta[/name_f], etc are already used as names. I’m worried about the similarity to epilepsy

I definitely don’t think it’s too hard to pronounce, but the only contexts I think of it in are math (bleh) and sorority/fraternity (meh)…so I’m not a fan there.

I don’t think it’s impossible at all. It’s cool.

We tend to be fairly progressive namers here on NB, but yes, it’s too much for a real-life human. Great name for a pet though.

I honestly don’t even think the other Greek letters should be used as names :see_no_evil:

As someone who had childhood epilepsy this did not occur to me at all

I also thought of epilepsy or more specifically the name for an epileptic medication - not a specific one necessarily, but it seems like it could be one.

After a lot of physics math many greek letters sound like good names to me :joy: This one is ok.

It reminds me of [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], which has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I like the sound, but maybe too much for a first. It’d make a great middle though.
