Is Gideon really THAT out there?

My first two children are named (Deleted for now, sorry). I feel like these are fairly common names even though I don’t personally know any children who go by them. We are due in [name]January[/name] and had decided on [name]Gideon[/name] for our 3rd. In fact, it is the only name we can agree on and we love it. I didn’t even realize that [name]Gideon[/name] would be considered unusual (see baby name news today). First of all it is biblical. It is also found as a minor character in the Book of Mormon, which is significant because I am Mormon (belonging to The Church of [name]Jesus[/name] [name]Christ[/name] of Latter-[name]Day[/name] Saints) and I live in an area with a pretty dense Mormon population. But the reason that I think it appealed to my husband and I is because it sounds handsome and charming and easy going at the same time. Plus we love musicals and [name]Gideon[/name] is the youngest in [name]Seven[/name] brides for seven brothers (one of our favorites). I don’t know any other Gideons and have only met one baby by that name (in a different state) but my question is whether you think it will seriously clash with our other children’s classic/fairly common names. I don’t think it will change our decision but am looking for your opinions, support, or criticism. thanks.

I quite like Gideon. It is more uncommon than Henry and Mollie. Is it “out there”? Maybe for a lot of people but I don’t think here on Nameberry it would be labelled as “out there”. Gideon was No# 461 in popularity last year in the US compared to Henry (No# 67) and Mollie (this spelling was No# 672 - the spelling Molly was No# 87). I think Gideon is unusual for the general population because it’s so rarely heard. Henry, Mollie and Gideon look and sound good together. The name seems to mean a great deal to you and your husband so my advice would be to go for it!

I think people put way too much emphasis on sibsets. For the first quarter of your child’s life they’re known as so-and-so’s sibling. Then for the next 60 years they’re their own person. Half of my friends don’t even know my brother’s name. Oh, and my mom was actually pressured into giving my brother a very traditional name because mine was considered to be so unusual at the time - and now you’d never think my name was anything but ordinary.

My opinion is this: Times change, relationships change. [name]Don[/name]'t base your child’s name on the fact that you’ll be saying “[name]Henry[/name], [name]Mollie[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name]” for the next 20 years or so. Instead, picture him introducing himself as [name]Gideon[/name] for the many decades after that. And I know 2 Gideons born in the last two years, so it doesn’t strike me as unusual in the least. If you like it, go for it.

I really like the name [name]Gideon[/name]! I heard it on a little boy the other day at the park (sister named [name]Sally[/name]) and it was so cute on him. I say go for it!

I love [name]Gideon[/name]! I know a little [name]Gideon[/name] [name]Eugene[/name]. I think [name]Henry[/name], [name]Mollie[/name], and [name]Gideon[/name] are darling together!

I think [name]Gideon[/name] is lovely! I think it fits nicely with [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Mollie[/name], but as clover said, it’s only for a few years anyway.
I do not think it is too ‘out there’ at all. I don’t know any in real life, but it is still a heard of name that everyone knows, and can spell.
I would love to use [name]Gideon[/name] myself, but my husband hates it :frowning:

No I don’t think its too out there at all, I love it.

I have to agree with everything [name]Clara[/name] says, down to my Hubby hating it too :frowning: [name]Gideon[/name] is my all time favourite boy name, he was a hero in a story I read as a child. For me it’s a timeless, strong and handsome name.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I love [name]Gideon[/name]! And I do think [name]Henry[/name], [name]Mollie[/name], and [name]Gideon[/name] sound great together.

Thanks everyone. Its nice to get such positive feedback. I’ll admit that from the beginning it was most important for us to come up with a name that we both liked, everything after that (sibsets, meanings, etc) is nice, but not necessary for us. I feel lucky having found a name that we both love so much. I personally think that [name]Henry[/name], [name]Mollie[/name], and [name]Gideon[/name] sounds good together, but its nice to get reassurance from a different perspective. You have been a great resource for us, Thanks.

[name]Don[/name]'t be afraid to use [name]Gideon[/name]! It’s an amazing name with a great meaning.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with [name]Gideon[/name]. It’s a fantastic name, and I think it goes perfectly with [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Mollie[/name].

[name]Gideon[/name] is just lovely! Works well with your other choices and I don’t think it’s too popular. =)
