Is Gilbey a legitimate first name?

I think [name_m]Gilbey[/name_m] is super lovely for a little boy. I am not a fan of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] so am wondering whether [name_m]Gilbey[/name_m] can stand by itself - thoughts? I have only ever heard it is a last name

The only other name we have is [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] - NN [name_u]Gus[/name_u]

Sure, why not? It has a familiar sound, reminiscent [name_u]Colby[/name_u] and [name_u]Bobby[/name_u]. It’s bright and cheerful, but it has substance. I do think I prefer it as a nickname for [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], but I think [name_m]Gilbey[/name_m] can definitely stand on its own.

If you don’t like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] would you then get frustrated with everyone assuming your child’s actual name is a nickname for [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]? If so, I’d steer clear. If not, then sure why not.

I would probably put it in the same category as [name_u]Kirby[/name_u], and that’s a legitimate first name.

I think it could be a legitimate name ! I think it is certainly unique. [name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation would be folks assuming it’s a nickname for [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]

I think it could work, I’d probably spell it [name_m]Gilby[/name_m] personally. [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is also really nice.

[name_m]Gilbey[/name_m] sounds more like a nickname to me personally! I like [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] with [name_u]Gus[/name_u]! You could also do [name_m]Ferguson[/name_m] with [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] or [name_u]Gus[/name_u] as nicknames!

It could definitely work! I do agree, however, with @Alix2016 that it would most likely be assumed his name is [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] the same, if I met a Bethy I’d assume the child is [name_f]Beth[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], whereas I wouldn’t assume a [name_f]Bella[/name_f] is [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] or [name_f]Annabella[/name_f]. Certain names just give a certain vibe. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!
