Is Grace too popular?

My Husband suggested [name]Grace[/name] as a possible name for our little girl on the way. I think it’s a beautiful name, but it’s 18 or 19 on the SSA. Our other daughter is named [name]Autumn[/name] and I think they would go well together.

So is it too popular? [name]How[/name] many Graces do you know? Does it go with [name]Autumn[/name]? Any suggestions that are similar to [name]Grace[/name]? My top pick as of now is [name]Violet[/name], not sure if that helps get our style, if we have one

[name]Grace[/name] is a very popular middle name right not, but not popular as a first name.
An example : I know of 7 little girls with the middle name [name]Grace[/name]. I don’t know any with [name]Grace[/name] as a first name.

I think [name]Grace[/name] is gorgeous, I’m really happy to see someone considering it for the first name position, usually its demoted to a middle name!
I think its beautiful. I’d use it if I didn’t have a cousin with the name [name]Grace[/name].

I work with three Graces, but they are all over 25…
I agree with the above poster, right now, its MUCH more popular as a middle name… I call it a “filler” middle name, not too say it isnt a beautiful name, but it VERY overused as a mn… In the past year, 2 very close friends have had baby girls… [name]Lily[/name] [name]Grace[/name] & [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. I also know of a toddler names [name]Arianna[/name] [name]Grace[/name]. I also know an [name]Ariana[/name] [name]Rose[/name], another “filler” mn.
So, all in all, if you love the name, use it But of course you will come across LOTS of people/babies along the way with either the same first name or middle name as your dear baby!

It’s not too popular for me. Then again, [name]Grace[/name] is my grandmother’s MN, and I’m pretty much convinced that [name]Grace[/name] will be somewhere in my first daughter’s name.

I agree that [name]Grace[/name] is less predictable as a FN than a MN, though. I hear [name]Grace[/name] ALL OVER THE PLACE as a MN, but I don’t hear it as much as a FN. Strangely enough, I know more Autumns than I know Graces. I know two Graces, they’re both about 10 and go to my church. I do know of a [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and a [name]Lily[/name] [name]Grace[/name], though, both born in the past two years.

I think it goes nicely with [name]Autumn[/name].

I know 7 girls with the first name [name]Grace[/name], ages ranging from 4-16.

I guess it depends on what YOU deem as “too” popular? You have already looked at the SSA list, so you know it IS a popular name. There are some other functions on that site you can use to look at statistics to see if it’s ranking means there are millions of them or not.

I hate to be the voice of dissent (and for the record I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Grace[/name]. [name]Love[/name] it. [name]Love[/name] it.), but if you are looking at a SSA Top 20 name and you have come to a baby naming site that specializes in unusual names, then…yeah, [name]IMO[/name], it is too popular.

But it is NOT [name]Hannah[/name] or [name]Madison[/name]. It is not every third baby girl. And if you really love it and you and your DH actually agree on it, don’t discard it unless you have hard and fast rules about name popularity.

DH and I won’t consider anything in the Top 100 for a first name and we have really steered clear of the top 250. But maybe your threshold is more lenient and just avoiding Top 10 could clear it for you!

P.S.
There are some pretty alternatives like [name]Gray[/name], Gracen, Graylen…

I can think of at least three little girls I know who are just [name]Grace[/name], a few more who have doubles ([name]Emma[/name] [name]Grace[/name], [name]Stella[/name] [name]Grace[/name], etc.) and I can’t even begin to count how many have it as a middle. I think it’s become the new default middle name, kind of like [name]Nicole[/name] used to be…

I adore the name [name]Grace[/name]/[name]Gracie[/name], and it’s one of those few names I love so much that I couldn’t care less how ‘popular’ it may be – it’s totally classic & timeless, too, so I definitely don’t think of it as being ‘dated’ or ‘trendy’ at all (only for MN’s, and even then, I still like it as a middle name…haha)!

In my opinion yes it is in both fn and mn spots. It is #18 on the US SSA chart. You also can’t count out names like [name]Gracelyn[/name]/[name]Grayson[/name]/[name]Gracie[/name] being used as alternatives or ways to get to [name]Grace[/name]. Beautiful like so many of the top 20 this year, bus sadly waay overused IMHO.

I love both [name]Autumn[/name] and [name]Grace[/name]! I have baby #2 on the way and am currently deciding between [name]Autumn[/name] [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Autumn[/name] [name]Grace[/name] if it is a girl! I think it is very popular but more so as a mn because of the fact that it is one syllable and flows well after most names, I only know of one [name]Grace[/name] as a first name. I agree [name]Autumn[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] go very well together, I would go for it, great choices!

If you really love [name]Grace[/name] and it feels like the right name for you, than use it, by all means. I have just always been glad my parents never gave me a top 20 or to 400 name for that matter, when peole hear my name they are surprised or give me compliments. .That never happens to my best friends emily and [name]Kaitlin[/name]. [name]Just[/name] food for thought. I only wanted to highlight in my last post [name]Grace[/name] is even more popular than she seems due to parents looking for less popular alternatives, but then it just creates a “meganame”(NB term), a lot of little girls with [name]Grace[/name] in their name and some boys too with the popularity of [name]Grayson[/name]. Of the most obvious virtue names ([name]Joy[/name], [name]Faith[/name], [name]Charity[/name]) I prefer [name]Hope[/name]. I love how it looks and sounds so different than most traditional girls names,it’s climbing in popularity a bit, but less underused and trendy than [name]Grace[/name] I believe from what i have read and researched on my own. NB has done some great blog posts on [name]Virtue[/name] Names that could be helpful. If you are looking for something less underused which is I think one of the main reasons people love NB (I think that’s a better term than popular b/c a lot of popular names are classics, just overused, like if I meet one more peer named [name]Mike[/name] or [name]Matt[/name] ) here are some ideas:

[name]Honor[/name]
[name]Clemency[/name]/[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Loyal[/name] (I knew a girl with this name, she was very pretty and quiet)
[name]Mercy[/name]
[name]Patience[/name]
[name]Prudence[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Amity[/name] (but reminds me of Amityville Horror movies)

Also [name]Hannah[/name]/[name]Anna[/name] mean [name]Grace[/name], some of my faves include [name]Annabel[/name], Annabeth, [name]Annika[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name], [name]Annora[/name]

I know one [name]Grace[/name] who is about two years old and three that are teenagers. [name]Grace[/name] is very popular as a middle name but as a first not so much. Have you checked out where [name]Grace[/name] ranks in your state?

[name]Grace[/name] is in the top 20 as a fn, even if you haven’t met many they’re out there. When a name reaches the top 20 it usually becomes pretty ubiquitous. Of course state rankings are a good idea to check as the pp mentioned, but still being #18 as a FN out of 1,000 names for girls in the entire US (and that doesn’t include variations and yooneek spellings like [name]Grayce[/name] which I’m sure exist) is undeniably popular. I don’t mean to be argumentative, just food for thought. Also the stats are from this year and I believe and have even read on NB [name]Grace[/name] is going to presumably climb even higher. I guess it really depends on your definition of “too”. If you like [name]Grace[/name], I say use it despite popularity.

The popularity of this name saddens me the most, as it is gorgeous and classic. However, I would never use it or anything near the top 500, but that’s just me.
If popularity does not matter to you at all, and you really love it then you should use it.

In addition to my previous post about calling out next daughter [name]Autumn[/name] [name]Grace[/name], we already have a daughter name [name]Honour[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name], which I think is another beautiful virtue name and a lot more underused than [name]Grace[/name]. I also know someone who called their little girl Gracyn (pronounced “[name]Gray[/name]-Sin”) and I think that is gorgeous too!

The only real question is “Is [name]Grace[/name] too popular for you?” It is a top twenty name, for whatever that is worth – but you already knew that.

You might need to focus on what you don’t like about a name being popular. Are you worried your daughter will often have other little Gracies in her class and so not feel special? That is a legitimate concern.

But there is another concern that is not so legitimate – at least to me. If you are worried [name]Grace[/name] is too popular and therefore doesn’t flatter your vanity as a baby namer – let it go. Only grownups make good mothers, and that attitude doesn’t become a real live adult.

Popularity hasn’t made this name any less classic, timeless and beautiful. There is that consolation. If you don’t mind your daughter running into other Graces, use it.

By the by, it’s a knockout with [name]Autumn[/name]. [name]Love[/name] them together.

Honestly, I think it depends where you live. From what I’ve experienced it seems more common as a first name in southern states. I live in the northeast and I don’t know any little girls name [name]Grace[/name] as a first name. I will say it’s popular in the middle but that’s why I find it so refreshing up front. I think it’s lovely. I would check the popularity in your specific state/area. I would use it though if I loved it. I think it’s a really perfect sibset with [name]Autumn[/name].
