My husband and I are expecting a baby boy in September and are struggling on a name. We have a daughter named Samantha Jane and her name felt right almost immediately after we started talking about it. We liked that it was a name that people recognized, but wasn’t over used at the moment. Additionally, we liked that it had a couple of nicknames (Sam and Sammie) that were shorter because of the length of our last name
We have tossed the name Hadrian around quite a bit and like it, but it does strike us as a name that people wouldn’t recognize, but we do believe that it sounds like it looks. We are not sure how we would shorten it and have been trying to use it around the house “Hadrian please close the door” and “Hadrian, it’s time for dinner” and it’s just not rolling off the tongue.
We’ve also tossed around Andrew calling him Drew, but again it still doesn’t ‘feel right’
I don’t think [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] is too unusual! I think it’s very easy to explain “like [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] with an H”. As for nicknames, maybe [name_f]Haddie[/name_f], Adri, [name_u]Rio[/name_u], or [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
I like [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] “Drew” a lot, too, but if it doesn’t click for you then it’s probably not “the one”.
I love [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m]! Neutral connotation (Hadrian’s Wall) and much cooler than [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
I agree with [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as a nickname, but I also think it’s alright alone.
The most common nicknames for [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] where I live are [name_f]Ady[/name_f] (ay-dee) and Adri (ay-dree) so, going with that theme, maybe [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] could be Haydie or Hadri?
I think it’s an great and underused name btw! Definitely goes well with [name_f]Samantha[/name_f].
Canadian PM [name_m]Justin[/name_m] Trudeau has a son named [name_m]Hadrien[/name_m]! I agree that it’s cool in theory but for me it doesn’t roll off the tongue easily either. It sounds better in [name_u]French[/name_u] than in [name_f]English[/name_f] to me.
Would you consider [name_m]Adrian[/name_m]? It feels like the middle ground between [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m].
I quite like Hadrian, and it seems familiar because of Hadrian’s Wall (which I learned about in high school, even though I’m from the US). Nicknames, in addition to some of the great ones already mentioned, could be Ri (pronounced either Rye or Ree), Dree, or even, actually, Drew. That last one is a bit more of stretch, though I still think it COULD work.
I think it’s rather bold. I guess because where I live, the usual form of the given name is [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], and [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] is basically only used to refer to the historical emperor (the one who built Hadrian’s Wall).
To me Haydie would be the most intuitive nickname.
Our problem with [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] is we live about an hour outside of [name_u]Philly[/name_u], and my husband is a [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] fan. So to him [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] is a girl’s name (I have seen that the character’s name is supposed to be Adrianna… but trying to convince my husband of that would be an uphill battle)
To me, [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] is very familar because of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] emperor but I don’t know how well known he and his name are among other people. Anyway, I do think ot helps that [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] is similar to [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
[name_u]Ari[/name_u], Han and [name_m]Dan[/name_m] could work as nicknames.
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u], [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], [name_u]Aidan[/name_u]? I feel as though [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] sounds like a mix of two different names put together, but would sound better apart.
