Is Hawthorne Usable?

We’ve been set on using [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] as middle name for our upcoming [name_f]May[/name_f] baby, but recently have been thinking it could be his first name. Is it too out there?

I like how the related nicknames look on the page ([name_m]Thor[/name_m], [name_m]Thorn[/name_m], [name_m]Hawk[/name_m]), but not how they sound. I was thinking of maybe calling him [name_m]Hal[/name_m] as a nickname or having his nickname be based on his middle name. Dh likes [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_m]Julius[/name_m] (original idea was [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], which is still under consideration), and we could maybe use [name_u]Jules[/name_u] as nickname if we went with that first option?

I’m just not sure if it’s usable or too quirky. I feel like it goes well with other sons names: [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]

For anyone following this board closely, I think it’s clear I have some reservations about using [name_m]Julian[/name_m] for third baby boy lol. I have posted about it lots and lots. It’s gotten good reception, but I feel like there’s something out there that’s more original… could it be [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]?

Thanks in advance!

I really like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. I also think it goes well with [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is certainly usable. It’s familiar sounding (who hasn’t read The [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Letter in high school?) It’s might get misspelled, but I highly doubt it will be mispronounced. Also, I agree, it sounds great with your other son’s names. And since you were adventurous enough to use [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], (I know quite a few people that would think it’s unusual) then I don’t feel like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is too much of a stretch for you. You should definitely go for it if [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] feels right!

I love it. I think it’s perfectly usable and it has all sorts of nicknames – [name_m]Hawk[/name_m], [name_m]Thorn[/name_m], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], Han, etc. I think it goes fine with the other boys names and [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_m]Julius[/name_m] is fabulous

I really like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. Lots of nickname choices, and goes really well with [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]! [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is also very handsome, but I like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] as a first name better with your other boys.

I think it’s usable as a first name.

I like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. To my mind its distinctiveness is a plus, and the nicknames are great.

I don’t really like it, but I do think it’s usable. I went to college with a girl named [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] who was very snobby, so that might be tainting my opinion of the name. I do think it’s much better on a boy, seems too harsh to me for a girl. I actually think it’s great as a boy’s MN, just not such a fan of it for a FN.

I prefer the [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] combo (how gorgeous is that one? :)) but [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] in the first name spot is certainly usable especially with your two boys. I’ve always liked it better as a quirky mn choice.

Why not [name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]?? If you don’t like the nn for [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] you may want to leave it as a middle.

We love our little [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. We call him both by his full name and his nick name of [name_m]Hawk[/name_m].

A few people with heavy accents have a hard time with the “wth” sound in the middle of the name, but no one has told us it was too “out there.” We weren’t 100% sure we could do it when we our little one was born in [name_f]September[/name_f], but once we met him, we knew it was his perfect name.

Our oldest is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. We wanted another strong, traditional sounding name that wasn’t as common but still recognizable. [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] works for that. And it has the bonus of being a nature name ([name_m]Hawthorn[/name_m] also called the may flower is a type of rose).

Good luck!

is lovely.

[name_m]Julian[/name_m] is way too plain for your other names. [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is a perfect match with [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]… I say go for it!

Last thing… yell it five times in your kitchen!!! Still like it?
PS what about [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]?

[name_m]Julian[/name_m] is a nice name and will serve any boy well throughout live, but it’s quickly becoming a bore. Surnames for boys have always been a guilty pleasure for me and I think [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] has to be one of the coolest surnames as a first.

I really like it, but I like [name_m]Julian[/name_m] just as much, so I’m conflicted. [name_m]Hal[/name_m] would be really cute!

[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is great and I like it better with your other boy names.
