Is IO problematic?

Okay well how do I put this I like the name Io but reading the description of it is kinda bad but at the same time I still like it? Should I keep it on my list or get rid of it?

The story is sad, but the name is super cool.

I think it’s debatable, but the connection with Jupiter’s moon makes it fit more of an astronomy-name than a mythology-name, sort of like [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f].

I think it can be debated. Myself, I think I see it more as a strong female’s story, she was hurt by a man and rather than let that continue, she got out and made sure he would never hurt her again. But, I also totally see why it might put someone off the name. Personally, though, I see it as more of a positive thing, and so I say keep it on your list!

See I have the same trouble with [name_f]Sabine[/name_f] and [name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f] too. But you can’t really curse a child with a name from a myth. People lead their own paths. And [name_f]Io[/name_f] is such a lovely name. I met a lovely caretaker with the name so there you are.

I have this dilema with the names [name_f]Leda[/name_f] and [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]. I think if you really like it, keep it on your list.

The name is awesome, but the backstory is bad. However, you’ll run into this issue with almost any name from ancient mythology, so I still think it’s doable if you love it. Few people will know the legends behind the more minor figures in Greek mythology.

[name_f]My[/name_f] biggest usability issue with it is that it looks like ā€œLOā€ in lowercase, and I think people could make that mistake quite frequently.

I absolutely love that name. I think of Jupiter’s moon first. If we didn’t have a surname ending in O this would have been a top choice for us for a potential daughter. It’s simple to write and spell but stunning and special.

I think the story is pretty awful I have to say and I’m not sure I would want my name to mean that. Also I did have to Google how to say the name. I think if you really like it then it’s fine but personally I really don’t like it. Hope that helps!

Most mythological names have tragic associations. I think it’s fine since people’s immediate association won’t be the story (I doubt most people have ever heard of it)

I think it’s fine. I can see how the story would definitely put some people off.
Another thing to keep in mind is that it is the word for ā€˜I’ in italian (as in, i am a woman = io sono una donna)

I don’t have any strong opinions but maybe you could use [name_u]Aio[/name_u] instead? [name_u]Or[/name_u] as an nn for [name_f]Iona[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f], [name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Iolana[/name_f], etc.

The story of [name_f]Io[/name_f] from Greek mythology is one of the sadder ones, but how many people are actually going to remember that story?
