Irene is one of those names that I love but regularly forget about … I really don’t hear about it at all and I’ve never met a real life Irene of any age. I’ve been considering Iris, which I also love, but it doesn’t flow all that well with my surname - Irene flows really well, though! I love Irene’s history and mythological connections, as well as that lovely -eye sound.
In Australia the predominant pronunciation is eye-REEN, so no matter how much I like some of the other pronunciations I always naturally revert back to eye-REEN.
Irene and Iris had a relatively similar reign of popularity in my country, but Irene endured for longer and didn’t leave the top 100 until the late 50s. I think this definitely influences people’s perception of Irene as a “dated” name, whereas Iris doesn’t have quite the same connotation (although it’s still uncommon).
I’d love to see Irene make a comeback. What about you?
Personally, I love [name_f]Irene[/name_f]! I would love to meet a baby [name_f]Irene[/name_f]. To me, it’s in the same category as [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and [name_f]Elise[/name_f]- never dated, never trendy.
Personally I prefer [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
The only [name_f]Irene[/name_f] I know is 80!. So this makes it seem dated to me and I can’t imagine this name on a baby/child.
However I do like the meaning of [name_f]Irene[/name_f], which is peace. another version/spelling with the same meaning that I’ve come across is [name_f]Irina[/name_f]. It feels more modern to me and it makes me like the name a little bit more.
[name_f]Irene[/name_f] is my #1 favorite girl’s name! I would use it as a first name in a heartbeat if my SO were on board, but have settled for it as a middle name instead. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Irene[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Irene[/name_f], though, like you, I forget about it! I do think it’s ready for a comeback, although it might be a slightly ahead-of-the-curve choice.
I love [name_f]Irene[/name_f]! I know both an 11-year-old [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and a 40-year-old one, so that combined with its mythological connections makes it feel pretty timeless to me
I didn’t appreciate that [name_f]Irene[/name_f] was ever popular but it was! I don’t love the sounds to be honest…. It is quirky and fun but I don’t see it coming into the top 100 or anything like that.
Yes!!! So ready! I could totally see myself with a little girl names [name_f]Irene[/name_f] in a good handful of years… it’s my lovely great-gran’s name.
I know an [name_f]Irene[/name_f] but she’s from the Netherlands and it’s pronounced ee-RAY-nuh, which I think is lovely and less dated. However, I would very much love to meet an [name_f]Irene[/name_f] of any age pronounced eye-REEN!!!
I adore the name [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and would love to meet a little one! I also love the nickname Reenie which I think completely adds to her charm! [name_f]Irene[/name_f] is totally ready for a comeback
[name_f]Irene[/name_f] has a kind of sharp, sweet sound! I quite like it, though I wish it looked different for some reason. That’s definitely a me issue though, so if you love it, i do think it has the sounds to make a comeback
In [name_f]Italy[/name_f] it is pretty popular (in the top 50) and I know a lot of Irenes around my age (22).
I usually love uncommon names but I have a soft spot for [name_f]Irene[/name_f]! It is classic, elegant and literary
I also know is really popular in Spain, where i know at least 4 spanish irenes
I totally feel it’s ready for a comeback! It is the middle name (an honor name for an older relative) of a child I know and I love it! Though I do think, in spite of its similarity to [name_f]Iris[/name_f], to the general public [name_f]Irene[/name_f] still feels a bit “old”. I wonder if [name_f]Irena[/name_f] would feel more contemporary right now?
