My husband has his heart set on the name [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (NN:lucky). I’ve had a few people say “oh but it’s so feminine”. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is girlie? Any suggestions I could throw at hubby instead?
No. [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] will always be a boy’s name. I’m assuming you’re American. For whatever reason, Americans have a tendency to assume that any unfamiliar name is a girl’s name. I would ignore those comments, because they’re obviously coming from people who don’t know what they’re talking about. Boy’s names only become “unisex” when parents stop giving them to their sons out of fear that their son might gasp share his name with a girl.
I can see it becoming unisex BUT I think it’s totally a boy’s name! I love it for a boy actually!
Nope, it’s all boy to me. I like nn “[name_m]Lock[/name_m]” but [name_u]Lucky[/name_u] is really cute too!
I like that nickname ([name_u]Lucky[/name_u]) I’ve never heard it as a nn for [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] but it is really sweet. Anyhow, gosh no it’s not unisex. I wish people would stop doing that…“oh, it sounds feminine/masculine”. I find most of these people don’t know the history of the name, just go by sound, and tend to not stray from the norm when naming their own kids. I didn’t mean that to sound critical, but that’s just honestly what I’ve found, personally.
Maybe you could look up the name and it’s usage/history and prove to your husband that it is all male.
It’s always been a boy’s name to me. However, both [name_m]Vince[/name_m] [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] and [name_m]Mark[/name_m]-[name_m]Paul[/name_m] Gosselaar have their daughters varied spellings of this name. This may have sparked a trend with giving girls the name [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]. If you like it, use it! I’d say you’re safe.
I have only heard Laclan being used as a boys name.
Unfortunately the first person I knew named [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] was a girl (which was before I had any exposure to the name), so it seems very feminine to me. I completely understand your dilemma though.

[name_m]Way[/name_m] more boys than girls, although the girl numbers are holding steady but low. My guess is that it will grow in popularity and might end up like [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] but probably not [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. There were even Lachlyn,F,7 in 2014 which means it might end up with a [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]/[name_u]Camryn[/name_u] [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]/[name_u]Jordyn[/name_u] type split.
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] has been in the top 20 for boys in Australia for the past decade. I can’t imagine it on a girl. It’s all kilt and bagpipe and wild highlands to me. I love it. If I didn’t live in [name_m]Oz[/name_m], I would use it.
I’ve only heard it on boys.
I’ve seen the name on a couple of girls spelled [name_m]Locklynn[/name_m]. I like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] much better - that spelling and on a boy. I feel like anything ending in the len/lan sound can be made feminine these days by spelling it “lynn.” It may get some play on the girls side but I see it staying boy.
Not at all. There is absolutely no danger of people thinking your kid is a girl with this name. The people who have said that are utterly clueless.
We’re both in love with the name and if you follow the history it’s a boys name through and through. We absolutely adore it’s uniqueness we just worry that the “trend setters” will sink their claws into it, they always ruin the best names. Husband is 6’4 red head so baby stands the potential to be a big strapping boy. I think It will fit him perfectly! Thank you for the reassurance
I know one [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], she’s a young girl. I don’t necessarily think this is too feminine, but I also don’t see a reason to drop a name just because it could be considered unisex.
No…still an awkward sounding boys’ name.
I can’t see this being a girl’s name, personally…
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is definitely a name for a boy.
I live in [name_m]Oz[/name_m] also and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is all boy here. It’s been super popular for a really long time, so I’ve never seen a female [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], I’m sure there would be some out there, just not many here. I hate this assumption that any name with the -an or -en ending is now unisex.
