I adore the name [name_f]Lola[/name_f], but I’ve gotten a lot of comments from people I know saying it’s not “a proper full name”. I’m far from having children, but I can’t seem to stop worrying about it.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] is not a nickname, it is a well-known, full name but if you would prefer a longer name you could call her something like [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and just refer to her as [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. The only other names I can think of that can be shortened to [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are [name_f]Delores[/name_f] and [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. I personally think it’s a very cute name and you should name your child what you like, even if it is a nn (which it isn’t) but it still shouldn’t be a problem to anyone else.
It’s definitely not too “nicknamey”. I know several people called [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and it just isn’t something that I would call a nickname. Not even the ones that sound like longer forms of [name_f]Lola[/name_f] sound that similar to me, so I would say don’t worry about it!
Definitely not, it’s more than usable and known as a full name.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] definitely works on its own!
Not too nicknamey at all - I know a couple and it’s their full name
It’s not nicknamey at all.
Nameberry says that [name_f]Lola[/name_f] originates as a shortened version of [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], but I think it has made itself known as a full name and can totally stand on it’s own. But if you feel the need for a full name, I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] from your signature could work.
I love [name_f]Lola[/name_f]! Personally, it’s semi-nickname feel has kept me from adding just [name_f]Lola[/name_f] to my list. I don’t have a longer form that I love enough to put on my list, and while there are some nicknames that’ve become established as full names (like [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], or [name_f]Kate[/name_f]) that are used on their own, [name_f]Lola[/name_f] feels too nicknamey for me to use it on its own. Poo. If others are able to convince you, though, [name_f]Lola[/name_f]'s so spunky and adorable, and I’d love to meet a little one with the name! I think [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f]/[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]/[name_f]Lauren[/name_f]/[name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Marlo/name_f, [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], etc., etc. all could work nicely! (Unfortunately, I don’t love any of them enough as a FN to use them, although this response DOES have me seriously considering [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] “[name_f]Lola[/name_f]”…
Good luck!
I think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is just fine as a full name, but [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is one of my favorite names and I have been loving the idea of [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Louisa[/name_f].
Definitely a full name.
I say [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is fine as a full name, but I also will admit I probably wouldn’t use it as such. However, I do love the name [name_f]Paola[/name_f], with [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname. My SO also adores [name_f]Paola[/name_f], but always says “[name_f]Lola[/name_f] la loca” when I say anything about [name_f]Lola[/name_f], so I am just not going to clue him in that I would use [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname until it’s too late, should we ever use [name_f]Paola[/name_f]!
I don’t think it’s too nicknamey, but it’s definitely not my personal taste at all. My mother always referred to it as a “stripper name” because of Copacabana (her name was [name_f]Lola[/name_f], she was a showgirl) so that has tainted it forever in my mind.
Who cares what others think.
Have you seen the show [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f]? It’s why I love the name so much, because of how they say [name_f]Lola[/name_f].
It can totally be a full name. It won’t have a nickname, but it’s fine.
I don’t think it’s too nicknamey, I love it!
The thing is that [name_f]Lola[/name_f] it is a nickname for [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]. I mean, it was the origin. But nowadays, at least here in Spain, more and more parents are using [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as full name. I do think it works nicely as a proper name.
