Is Luca/Luka too feminine?

Well, I’ve recently fallen completely for the name [name]Luca[/name] for a boy - problem is, most people I’ve shared it with have said it sounds very feminine and “like a girl”.

So, to you, is [name]Luca[/name]/[name]Luka[/name] more of a boys name or a girls name? (I know its unisex)

I don’t mind it on either gender, but I prefer it for a boy.

I think of a boy when I hear [name]Luca[/name]. It is a popular boys name in [name]Italy[/name] too.

I think of [name]Luca[/name] as a boy’s name

[name]Luca[/name]/[name]Luka[/name] is 1000% a boys name to me.

Totally a boy name (there is a girl variant, but it isn’t pronounced the same). I know like, 15 guys named [name]Luca[/name] (all from [name]Italy[/name]), it’s very masculine to me.

[name]Luca[/name] is most definitely a boy’s name! I went through a very similar worry when we were considering the name and after asking hundreds (literally) of people, I only had one say that she initially thought it was a girl’s name.

I’m not Itallian and know very few people of Itallian origin, so I have no real life experience with the name [name]Luca[/name]. But in my own mind, I’ve always thought [name]Luca[/name] did sound very feminine. I’m sorry, that’s just my opinion. To be fair, I always thought [name]Micah[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], and [name]Asa[/name] sounded extremely feminine as well.

[name]Suzanne[/name] [name]Vega[/name] had a song in the late 80s called “[name]Luka[/name].” I know many of my friends cite this as a reason for thinking of this name as feminine. However, the “[name]Luka[/name]” in the music video is a little boy. I found an interview with [name]Vega[/name] that states she choose the name, [name]Luka[/name], because:

“It’s universal. It could be a girl or boy and it could be any nationality," in regards to her song about child abuse. (Surviving the Hits - The New York Times)

As others have mentioned, [name]Luca[/name] is a traditional Italian male name, and there’s even Gianluca, too. [name]Luka[/name] is a traditional Slavic-based male name (Russian, Serbian, Crotian, Slovene, etc). Also, comments on behindthename.com mention it as a unisex name in the Netherlands.

I think it works.

[name]Luca[/name] isn’t feminine, it’s the Italian variation of [name]Luke[/name].

I love it. My nephew is called [name]Luca[/name] and I don’t know anyone who thinks it sounds feminine. having said that, to me it’s a great name if you don’t want anything too macho.

[name]Luca[/name] is not feminine at all.

It’s all boy for me, I’ve known a few little boys with the name (work in a daycare.) I love it!

I don’t think it sounds feminine, but maybe that’s because I know it’s a masculine name. I can see how someone who didn’t know better might assume it’s the feminine form of [name]Luke[/name]/[name]Lucas[/name]. But, I don’t think their ignorance should stop you from using it if you love it. [name]Luca[/name] looks more masculine to me than [name]Luka[/name] (K is a girly letter in my mind, I guess?), if that helps.

It’s all boy to me.

It isn’t “unisex”, it’s a boy’s name. [name]Luca[/name] on a girl is horribly trashy, but it’s gorgeous on a boy. Honestly, my hackles always rise when someone asks if a boys’ name is too “feminine”. [name]How[/name] is “feminine” a bad quality to have?

Not at all - that was my grandfather’s name, but when he came over from [name]Italy[/name] he went by [name]Luke[/name].

I love [name]Luca[/name] (since the old days of the show ER). It is a beautiful name and is absolutely all male to me. It would be a handsome, strong choice!

Definitely masculine to me. In a sexy, dark-haired, Euro-accented kind of way.

all boy to me. It makes me think of a character from ER who’s name was [name]Luka[/name].
