Ok, so I have a few questions about the name [name]Lucien[/name]/[name]Lucian[/name].
First, which spelling do you prefer? I would pronounce the name Loo-shin as I think the other pronunciation sounds a bit feminine. I like the look of [name]Lucien[/name] better but is it more likely to get pronounced as Loo-see-in with that spelling?
Second, does the name sound evil? I know it means “light” in Latin but I have gotten several comments about it sounding like Lucifer. [name]Even[/name] though the only similarity is the “loo” part.
What do you guys think of the name in general? Thanks
It’s not my favorite sounding name, because I do hear in some way “Lucifer”. I know it’s not fair…but that’s how my ear hears it. I feel a similar way about [name]Damian[/name]. [name]Hope[/name] this isn’t offensive!
I don’t really hear it, but like this name less than I otherwise would because I know other people would. I have the same feelings about [name]Damien[/name] that the other poster mentioned.
It’s interesting to me how I think this name has suffered for this when [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Lucia[/name] haven’t really. [name]Lucian[/name] is even further off in sound with the sh pronunciation in English. Maybe it’s because it’s a male name, maybe because [name]Lucy[/name] has [name]Lucille[/name] Ball and [name]Lucy[/name] of the CS [name]Lewis[/name] books to balance out Lucifer. [name]Lucia[/name] is a saint’s name. Maybe [name]Lucian[/name] is too?
Anyway, [name]Lucian[/name] looks more standard to me because of [name]Luciano[/name] Pavarotti and [name]Lucia[/name]. Also [name]Lucien[/name] makes me want to go all very very French. [name]Lucien[/name] gets away from [name]Lucia[/name] a little bit more if you want to get around from the [name]Lucy[/name] sounds, though although I know some people say [name]Lucia[/name] Loosha too, so maybe it’s just hard to say.
Also interesting the name [name]Christopher[/name] never took any grief - that -opher ending is from the same root as -ifer meaning “bearer”, I’m pretty sure. I guess if you’re bearing [name]Jesus[/name] you can’t also be bearing light / be a name for the devil! But still…
I love to meet a little [name]Lucian[/name]. But I think if you can’t shake the concern [name]Julian[/name] and [name]Lewis[/name]/[name]Louis[/name] both capture some of the feeling. I think [name]Lucian[/name] is a plausible nickname for [name]Louis[/name] [name]Sean[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name] [name]Shane[/name] etc., but then I’m always more flexible on this kind of stuff than most people.
It sounds different, it doesn’t have a negative ring to it for me, but it is out there. I like [name]Lucian[/name] better than [name]Lucien[/name]. What about [name]Luca[/name]? Kind of similar.
I saw someone post [name]Damien[/name] reminds them of evil, my s/o nixed [name]Damon[/name] very early off my list because he said it was an evil name.
[name]Hi[/name]! I know a 1 yr old [name]Lucian[/name], and at first I wondered about the ‘satan’ thing, but now it just seems like a cute little baby. I think people will get over the association really fast, especially as most people realize it’s not a legitimate name for the devil, it just kind of reminds them of the name.
I think I like [name]Lucian[/name] better. [name]Lucien[/name] looks like Loos-ee-en. (I assume you are going for Loo-shen?)
Wow, I can’t believe that people hear Lucifer when they hear [name]Lucien[/name]! To me thats like hearing Lucifer when you hear [name]Lucille[/name]!!!
Um, No [name]Lucian[/name] does not sound “evil” at all. I dont see when people are even getting that vibe? I mean [name]Lucy[/name] sounds more like Lucifer then [name]Lucian[/name] does. [name]Lucian[/name] is prn Loo-shun, but [name]Lucien[/name] I would prn Loo-see-in. I would go with [name]Lucian[/name] if that is the pronounciation you want.
I don’t hear Lucifer at all, though I did have a totally a-religious upbringing. It’s probably worth considering the demographics of your area on that front, because you’re more likely to get that association in deeply religious areas, I think.
I do, however, hear [name]Lucius[/name]. This is what happens when you bring up an entire generation on [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], I think! I don’t think that association will be as strong in the future as it is now, but lots of kids are still being given the books to read, so it’s worth considering that even sans-lucifer, the evil association might still be there.
Objectively, I do like the name though. Maybe as a mn?
I’m with babylemonade- I first hear [name]Lucius[/name]! As in [name]Lucius[/name] Malfoy, a major villain in the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] series. But, that being said, I really like [name]Lucian[/name]/[name]Lucien[/name] as a name and I think I could look past that association pretty easily. It doesn’t sound devilish to me, especially with the loo-shen pronunciation. [name]Hope[/name] that helps!
As to spelling I would say:
[name]Lucian[/name] - loo-shan
[name]Lucien[/name] - loo-see-en
I don’t think it sounds evil at all. It has a sweet quality to it which I like. Hey if it’s a problem (which I don’t think it would be) he could always choose to go as [name]Luke[/name]…
I don’t think it sounds evil, per se… but it does have a somewhat badass feel to it. Which isn’t a bad thing!
Like others, I think “LOO-shin” when I see [name]Lucian[/name], and “LOO-see-in” when I see [name]Lucien[/name]. So I’d stick with [name]Lucian[/name] in terms of spelling.
It also brings [name]Lucius[/name] Malfoy to mind for me, but moreso [name]Lucian[/name], the leader of the Lycans, from the Underworld film series. A great character, in my opinion, because he was originally painted as a villain, then given a sympathetic backstory and motive near the end of the first film, and cast as the hero in the prequel. My point is, a connection to that character would be a positive one for me.
All in all, I really like the name! I will admit that I’d find it slightly odd on a little boy, but extremely attractive on an adult.
Thanks everyone for your replies! They have helped a lot. I am not sure why so many people associate [name]Lucian[/name] with Lucifer. I have to admit that my gut reaction the first time I heard it was that it was an evil sounding name. I am a huge [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fan so that could possibly be it. But even those that aren’t familiar with the series see it as an evil name. Then I saw an adorable sweet blonde and blue eyed little boy with the name and it sounded amazing! The name is definitely on my list but could I look at an innocent baby and think he looks like a [name]Lucian[/name]? I’m not so sure
Also, thank you for clearing up the spelling issues. I would go with [name]Lucian[/name] as I prefer the loo-shin pronunciation:) Thank you again everyone!
